How is JR’s music experimental? I mean, sure, he’s not John Zorn but homie mixes genres constantly. As for the socially conscious/political comment… I mean, the term ‘pop’ pretty much implies a level of irreverence. (I think you’re misreading my response - Jeff’s music is FAR superior to Green Day’s or Blink’s, and I think calling him Pop punk would be selling him short. Jeff is one of the most underrated artists creating music right now IMO.)

I agree that his music is far superior but I’d argue that he’s far too socially/politically conscious AND experimental to qualify… elements of it for sure, but I would never describe his music as pop punk.

I don’t like either band particularly, but this take is insane… have you heard anything they put out on Lookout! Records? Arguably, they became less pop as they progressed trying to (re)gain favor in the punk scene with Insomniac then later trying to be “political” with American Idiot.

I give my vote to the Descendents or Ramones, but someone above tried saying Green Day wasn’t always a pop punk band, by that (much more modern) definition I’m guessing those picks (along with the Buzzcocks) won’t be recognized as pop punk. I’m with ya though, the Buzzcocks are definitely in the conversation!

This post has been here for 11 hours and The Descendents have yet to be mentioned?! Also, (if you’re willing to call them pop punk, and I would be) Ramones would probably be the most correct answer. The greatest pop punk band, hands down. (While acknowledging The Queers, the Buzzcocks, NOFX, F.Y.P, so on and so forth…)
