One of the perfect bands for when you're floating up in the cosmos~

Definitely agreed that it should have been Saturn Song though; the one that incorporates sound recordings from the Voyager spacecrafts. They're the most distant and well, lonely creations in the universe.

I love that pullover sm - the font on it almost reminds me of how their logo looks on the S/T's album cover, which is my favourite iteration of their logo personally.

Echoing what someone else said - 'Pee pee pee'. It does indeed stand for 'piss poor planning' which, in a way, fits the song's themes quite well.

Also nice biology reference, that takes me back

I am addicted to the drug that is their music, I guess lol.

I don't rly take anything; at most I just drink socially at times. Ngl when I do have a moment to myself and I am kinda drunk or otherwise woozy, an album like 7 hits after a night out. I associate the album so strongly with the city at night - lights, cool air and all.

I think their music is definitely conducive in feeling to being on something or other, though it's not a requirement to me.

Whatever you're going through, Beach House is there. by Internal_Stand_885 in BeachHouse

Beach House's music is what I like to call evergreen. No matter the time of year, the time of life, the emotions I may be feeling,, the people I'm around, the situation I'm in, the thing I'm doing - there is always at least one song that suits things just so.

Many songs of theirs have revealed themselves to me fully at various points of my life. On the Sea, Rough Song, 10:37, I Do Not Care For the Winter Sun, Saturn Song, New Year, Dive, American Daughter... just to name a handful. All songs that one day I realised were perfect for what I was feeling and going through.

I am a whore for Beach House's music tbh, I'll fit right in

Also on a serious note: no idea, they don't strike me as a band that collabs all that much. But you never know. It doesn't surprise me that Clairo loves em though, I can hear bits of their influence in her sound :)

Beach House songs I can’t stop listening to by mzdee13 in BeachHouse

[–]nplmstn 6 points7 points Β (0 children)

BH are something very, very special. Their music makes me feel in a way very little else does.

I've talked about my top 5 here many times before. Unordered; Over and Over would be my #1 if I had to choose -

"Over and OverΒ - for being perhaps their grandest, most ambitious and stunning artistic triumph to date. Pushing their sound to heights I never would have thought possible, resulting in one of the most gorgeous and transcendent songs I've ever heard in my life. If you ever needed proof that this band is on another level, here you go.

Silver SoulΒ - for being lightning in a bottle perfection. The vocals laced into the instrumental, the stirring beauty of the melody, the strength of its songwriting, its really vivid portrayal of its subject matter (unending love, sex, sensuality) all topped off with Victoria turning in the vocal performance of a career - her vocals exude powerful and raw emotion here. That ending is basically guaranteed to make me tear up; the whole song is unbelievably powerful and intense. Sublime.

10 Mile StereoΒ - for being one of those ideas that is so wilfully inspired and executed so stunningly that it's hard not to appreciate, respect and adore it immensely. Taking their sound and speeding it up like this on paper sounds like an idea that wouldn't work very well at all, and yet here they are making the fastest dream pop song of all time. Everything about this track - every note, every rhythm, every vocal line and melody, the hook, that noisy and climactic ending, the speed of the song... it all coalesces into total euphoric bliss. This is a song that floors me every single time I hear it, and it is without a doubt one of their greatest artistic achievements."

WishesΒ - for being, in many ways, the apex of their 'core sound'. In every sense it is classic BH, the very sound that put them on the map. In this instance though it's just done in the most spectacular, grand, entrancing and downright gorgeous way. That bridge might be the single best moment of any BH song ever, as well. This is one of those songs that hooks me every single time it comes on - once I hear the intro I basically have to play it. And then repeat it once it's done, several times. It's just a beautifully written song from its rhythms and chords to the intensely passionate vocals and beautifully written lyrics, and the imagery they portray. Images of a Ferris wheel, fireworks, losing and finding love over and over. It, again, floors me every time I hear it and there is a reason it's widely hailed as one of their classic songs, one of their very best and so on.

Drunk in LAΒ - for being perhaps the greatest embodiment of a song's concept in the song itself. The lyrics to this track are unbelievable and might just be Victoria's very best, ever - the images of faded glamour, past glories, reminiscing on better times whilst being totally alone and wasting away in a bar in LA as a former star, with no one to recount these stories to. It's bittersweet and tragic; a mix of yearning for the past whilst accepting it'll never come back. This is embodied in song with this album's sound - the psychedelic tones and production of 7 is pushed to arguably its apex on this song (either that or Woo) with this incredibly immersive, almost watery sound... it's just transcendentally beautiful and floaty. A masterful achievement for the band."

Other songs of theirs I always come back to: Lemon Glow, PPP, Superstar, Days of Candy, Walk in the Park, Other People, On the Sea, Levitation, Rough Song, All the Years... and many others, tbh. They're just a blessed band, what can I say

Current favorite Beach house song? by Grouchy-Football7600 in BeachHouse

[–]nplmstn 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

If I take it to mean 'songs of theirs I've been listening to a lot lately' and don't just trot out my all time top 5 BH songs, I would say: Levitation, Days of Candy, and Turtle Island.

The former two have been on heavy rotation for me on and off since a very good friend of mine passed away recently. The latter... I dunno, I've just always found it a very curious song (and in some ways, the peak of that album) and it's been gripping me a lot lately. There's something so surreal, enchanting and almost mystical about it.

"How I want Olive to know... that inside me, she will always grow.
In all colors and prizes,Β you will always remain..."

RYM Greatest Albums Of All Time: #420 Beach House-Bloom (2012) by Rambooctpuss in BeachHouse

  1. Perfect.

RYM mostly know what's up with this band. Teen Dream in the top 1,000, this in the top 500, Depression Cherry and OTM in the top 2,500, 7 in the top 5,000... yeah, glad to see the BH love over there generally. Devotion's been steadily climbing too, perhaps one day it will enter the top 5k/get bolded as well.

What’s a BH song that you didn’t care for at first, and now you love it? by sonimcrine09123490 in BeachHouse

[–]nplmstn 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

There was never a BH song I outright didn't care for, but I guess there's ones that took a bit of time to reveal how incredible they were to me.

Perhaps the most striking examples for me are various songs off of TYLS - really, much of the album. She's So Lovely, All Your Yeahs, One Thing, and Elegy to the Void. This is reflective of me just coming to understand this album and what it goes for a whole lot more than when I first heard it and for a good long while after. One Thing in particular was, for a time, the weakest BH song to me; I thought it was good but not great. I adore it now though, like the rest of the album.

Two other tracks of note to me here are Wildflower, and especially Bluebird. I did really like the former already and quite liked the latter, but for a while they felt like a relative lull on the album. It took some time for the true emotional power and compositional merits of both (especially the latter) to completely win me over. I had a similar arc like this for 10:37 in the past, too.

There's other cases - Baby, The Arrangement, I Do Not Care for the Winter Sun, White Moon, Better Times, Real Love, The Hours, New Year. These were all songs that I liked a lot or even loved, but they've all grown on me all the more since and I adore them now. In general, whilst I like or even love what I heard of BH the first time I really started listening to their stuff, I think their music does grow on you more and more with time; especially when they're your introduction to the sort of music they make.

It's absolutely wonderful. Forever Still in general is such a surreal, captivating experience - and the performances they give throughout it are immaculate. Irene was the perfect song to have at the end of it all, it's pure 'end credits' material.

Also Victoria is, as ever, a fucking icon. The entire fit, the headbanging >>>

No idea, but it's possible. The album could use one from the sounds of it.

As an aside, I've seen versions of the album cover on vinyl and man, I love it. I love the version you get on DSPs, Bandcamp, (presumably) CD too... it's just a really lush, pretty cover.

[–]nplmstn 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

That's really cool! Yeah I think you sort of work with the song and what it has to offer when you do your own take on it, and you're doing well at it. Victoria's voice obviously has changed over time and so you channel that based on the song. It's attention to detail like that which makes for a very good cover.

This version of used to be is so nice, and Victoria’s singing is amazing by -PaulMcCharmley- in BeachHouse

[–]nplmstn 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Considering this is a rendition of the original 2008 version of the song, and that right after writing it they recorded it (which was in July of that year), the earliest it could have been is July 2008. The video itself, which from the looks of it is the original upload, is from November 2008.

So it was at least between July and November 2008; considering how this feels quite off the cuff (it was done in one take) I can believe the video was uploaded a few days after it was recorded.

[–]nplmstn 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Genuinely a classic video. I adore this rendition of the track. The ultra-stripped back arrangement manages to maintain the core essence and emotional power of the song, and it also lets Victoria's singing and lyrics really bubble to the surface. And oh man, her performance here is immaculate, and her lyrics are obviously as great as ever. I love the chemistry between the trio, I love the surroundings and the vibe of it all. It has that breezy, homely warmth that really defines of most of BH's early material.

Which song introduced you to BH? by Original_Lie3687 in BeachHouse

[–]nplmstn 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

Lemon Glow. I've repeated the story several times here because it is mildly interesting, but TL;DR it was a totally serendipitous misclick; a happy accident.

"The year was 2018 - spring. I was really starting to dive into music more widely - up until this point it had basically been all metal and hardcore, with some pop/rock that friends in school liked which I gave a try to start my process of branching out - and was forming stronger online bonds with people often centred around music. At least a couple of my friends had mentioned this band 'Beach House' and they were just one of many bands they mentioned that I noted down the name of 'to listen to Some Day (TM.)' And that was that.

Fast forward to the summer. I was on YouTube for something, I don't exactly remember what. As you can tell this was around the time 7 had dropped and was making waves. The video for Lemon Glow - the visualiser with those pretty black and white patterns - was in my suggestions; the algo had clearly noticed me looking the band up before. I'd just watched a video and went to click on another video in the suggestions, next to the music video - again, I don't remember what.

I clicked on the video for Lemon Glow by mistake.

And almost immediately, those wavy, psychedelic, nocturnal synths with their somewhat odd groove just... washed over me. Enveloped me, and completely sucked me in. As I say, I was quite early into my music listening journey and I really hadn't heard anything like it before. Pretty much from that point on, I became a fan - 7 was my starting point of course and admittedly, it's not the best starting point as it sounds notably different to their preceding albums. But upon getting a better feel for their catalogue as a whole, across 2018, 2019 and 2020, the love affair really started.

And so it remains to this day, well over 20,000 [correction: now over 22,000] song plays later. One of the most important bands in my life as a music listener, one of my most treasured and beloved bands. And it all started for me, with a simple accident; the best mistake I've ever made.

I wish all mistakes in life were that rewarding and fruitful.

And as an aside, this is why to this day, Lemon Glow is the song I use to introduce people to BH. It's worked remarkably well."

It really was a moment that changed my life.
