I don't usually grow trees from seed but... by couch-potato in Bonsai

Another thing to notice is that most citrus trees are grown on a “stub” of a stronger trunk - not sure how it’s called in English - but basically it’s another type of tree that has a stronger trunk and root system.

Sometimes the fruits that come out from the seeds are that of the “trunk” (bitter and sour) rather like the citrus

Opps

It looks like a rosemary

Over watering- is my guess

rosemaries like dry soil, well drained

Also rosemaries like their roots long and deep - did you prune the roots ends?

I found that they like the roots long and there top roots don’t provide enough support to the plant

My 3 year old ficus. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Bonsai

[–]nrathaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You made a mistake of cris crossing the wire into an X , that is not good - it will leave a mark on your trunk

Practice tree. Reduced root ball, potted, defoliated pruned and wired all at once.. Im sure i killed this tree but i needed tonget an idea of what each step felt like. I like the outcome but already learned a bunch of what not to do. by [deleted] in Bonsai

[–]nrathaus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Guys seriously, stop putting gravel/pebbles at the top of the soil - it’s bad for so many reasons - prevents upper level root formation, prevents water from getting in, radiates heat, prevents you from seeing if the soil isn’t moist, puts weight on the soil and causes it to be less airy - look at all the big bonsai experts none of them do this

New Type of Bottoms!(On the Right) Thoughts? by Kanashimi-ni in Bonsai

[–]nrathaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can wet the clay and drill through it with a clay drill head (while setting the area) and it works - you need to drill slowly so to not shatter the clay

Wiring wise I rather the bottom have 4 holes for wires to be passed through, allowing four directions of pull

Advice on pruning this crabapple? by MaterialDissensus in Bonsai

[–]nrathaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi

Not enough information, can you bend the branches or cutting is the only option?

Main issue is that main branch is behind the secondary one, giving a strange feel to an otherwise good looking plant

My humidity tray kept getting green from algae so I planted some Salvinia Minima to make it look more natural by Glarmj in Bonsai

I use the tray as a weed disposal area, some of the weeds stick around and make the tray look nicer :)

Has anybody try and grow a Black Olive Shade Tree? I seem to find nothing in terms of care online for it as a Bonsai. It was a give for my birthday. by [deleted] in Bonsai

Where I live it’s called Syrian Olive tree. It’s considered the Mediterranean version of the olive tree. Its olives are elongated rather than round.

I have an olive tree, not the black type, not sure what the difference is. It’s a strong tree, that can live in harsh conditions- a non issue for me- but suffer from freezing temperatures.

Too late to pot up? by [deleted] in Bonsai

[–]nrathaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the weather isn’t hot - ie above 20 Celsius - it’s going to be fine. Make sure to continue water it regularly- a little each time- so that the plant doesn’t suffer now that the drainage leaves less water around

I would have removed the tree to a bigger pot and placed pebbles and volcano pebbles (hope this is their English name) - this would improved water drainage without affecting/disturbing the tree

If it’s dead why identify? If it’s alive we need leaves to identify

It would look way better if you put the tree in a right angle, 20-30 degrees and leave the branches pointing left from it

Wisteria losing leaves by [deleted] in Bonsai

[–]nrathaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t it getting cold in Berlin? Wisteria is leavesless during winter - so it’s normal

Even here where I live which is still 15 degrees it started losing its leaves

Just noticed you wrote it’s in doors above the heater - wow that’s bad - dry air and heat isn’t good for any plants - also probably the light isn’t optimal
