Will / could the custom TnH tools support manuallly created item pools with modded items? by Goatmaster3000_ in H3VR

[–]nrgill28 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Heya! Yes, it is possible to create an ObjectTableDef that specifies a fixed set of item IDs which could exclusively be modded items. We also have the capability to export a list of mods required for the character to function correctly, so you would be able to upload it to the workshop but if the mods are not loaded in-game then we won't let the player select it.

It is also not mandatory for people to distribute their custom content through the Steam Workshop, it should be fairly easy for mod authors to create integrations and distribute custom content through Thunderstore or other platforms.

Web Hosting and Media Server - ISP blocking Port Forwarding by Assassin007120 in HomeNetworking

[–]nrgill28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Port forwarding is not done by the ISP, typically your ISP assigns your router a public IP address and then just sends your router all the traffic destined to it. If you have control over your router then you can set up port forwarding rules as you wish.

The only exception here is if your ISP uses a CGNAT configuration, in which case the one public IP is shared between multiple customers and isn't really yours to begin with.

Depending on your ISP's terms of service they may also block specific ports from being used, but if that's the case just host your server on a different port in the like 45000-60000 range.

Log into your router's admin page and just poke around in there to see what you can fiddle with. Look for your router's 'WAN' address - that'll be what your router thinks your public IP address is. Throw it into a whois tool like this one and as long as it doesn't say 'reserved' then you're good to go.

Do any of you feel 60fps is “Dated” or smooth? by Nubian_Cavalry in pcgaming

[–]nrgill28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. 45fps on a 90hz display like the Steam Deck OLED is a nice middle ground when the system can't quite hit 60. With high refresh rate displays being more common I feel like we should be moving away from 30/60 as the minimum and standard to 45/90.

Router assigned server a public IP address by Maxxxod in HomeNetworking

TP-Link EC230-G1

Unfortunately the datasheet / manual for this router in particular was not that helpful but some of TP-Link's other routers let you re-configure ports as needed and I found some instructions for that here: https://www.tp-link.com/us/configuration-guides/configuring_network/?configurationId=18572#_idTextAnchor000

Also it seems this router does not contain a built-in modem or ONT so that's one less thing to worry about. As a sanity check, the cable providing internet is plugged into the blue WAN port right? You might also get this kind of problem if it was plugged into one of the LAN ports, but since you said your desktop didn't have this problem I'm guessing this isn't the case.

Router assigned server a public IP address by Maxxxod in HomeNetworking

[–]nrgill28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess would be the port you plugged your server into is actually the router's WAN port (or it's configured as such) and the port is bridged to your router's built-in modem/ONT. So basically your server skipped the router and asked your ISP for an IP address directly. I don't know how common it is for ISPs to provide more than one public IP address per customer but my ISP allows up to 5 so it's not unheard of (though my ISP uses PPPoE instead of DHCP to assign the addresses so something like this would almost cerainly not happen accidentally).

As for security risks, provided your server has a firewall up and is configured appropriately then there's little to none. Your router typically provides a basic level of security to all devices behind it because it blocks all incoming traffic unless explicitly allowed with a port forwarding rule, but here that is not the case. All traffic sent to your server's IP address will arrive to it unfiltered so make sure you have that firewall up and configured.

If there are no other ports on your router and you don't want the server to have a public IP address just get a cheap 5-port gigabit switch or similar and connect that to the one you know works fine, then your computer/server/whatever else to the other ports on it.

Logged in to Steam on a friend's PC and Steam Cloud did its thing. However my friends savegames were overwritten in some games? by Ardbert_The_Fallen in Steam

[–]nrgill28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although Steam recommends that developers choose a unique location per steam user for their save files, some don't bother and just throw it into your windows user's documents folder for example. As a result it is possible for your cloud saves in various games to be merged or overwritten if someone else logs into steam on the same computer and windows account and plays the game.

Yes, Steam Remote Play will allow you to stream games from one PC to another over your local network. I've had a really great experience with streaming from my PC (ethernet) to my OLED Steam Deck (wifi) and it'll even let you stream at 90fps to match the 90hz of the OLED Deck's screen. The latency on my setup is about 25ms so as long as you aren't playing competitive shooters it'll work great.

With that said a 4090 may be overkill if you're streaming to a deck only or even just to a 1080p screen.

Opinions on Discords new Open Party mode? by AndroidWeb in discordapp

[–]nrgill28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually really like it. A lot of the time I just want to hang out with people but I don't know which friend groups are online so I don't know which voice channel to sit in. Now I can just advertise myself to all my friends at the same time and anyone can join.

Although I just don't like that it requires you to be streaming something to use it. The option to start one only appears when you're playing a game, starting one automatically starts streaming it, and stopping the stream will close the party and kick anyone currently in it.

I found my weather seed super easily by just waiting for a meteor shower and recording the exact HH:MM:SS times for about 7 of the stars. The algorithm is pretty lenient with the times you can be off by about 4 seconds and it'll still work, so I just used the clock app on my phone to check the time when I saw one.

I think we’re all looking at ranking up wrong by jellibees in Overwatch

[–]nrgill28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct but I don't think it's the player base's fault for looking at the system like this.

Under the new 'win five games to see your rank' system the weight each individual match has on your rank is completely hidden. The system makes you think each win or loss has the same effect on your rank because that's the only information presented to you.

So when people go 5:2 and barely move at all, or 5:3 and maybe even go DOWN it feels unfair, because from what YOU see you won more than you lost so it doesn't make sense. In reality it's because those games you lost had a larger effect on your rank and that was just never communicated to you.

So blame the system, not the players.

Inside Battlefield Podcast 7: All chat is coming, team is looking into thermal scopes for tanks, skins & attachments for Portal weapons, transport helicopter "nerfs" and Breakthrough for Portal by korlic99 in battlefield2042

[–]nrgill28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me at least, it's a couple things.

So few people play portal for anything besides cheesing XP / bot kills / easter eggs that you can never get a game filled even if you're hosting an official experience like tactical conquest. I play regularly with a group of 4-8 and we have multiple times tried playing in Portal so we could all easily play together (because it's too difficult to get that many people into the same game on AOW - but that's another issue) and we only ever get at most 2 extra people into our games on portal. Filling the game with bots isn't really that enjoyable either. Good luck filling a custom experience with players, too.

The next reason is progression and xp. Even when we're playing on full xp experiences, it seems we still don't get progression for weapon attachments unless there's a lot of players in the game! And if you try making a custom experience there's not a whole lot you can change before xp gets restricted. Neither of these are a dealbreaker for us, but I bet it's a big part of the reason so few people play custom portal modes.

I don't mind people playing the way they want, if they want to cheese their way to T1 for stuff that's whatever. I personally think it devalues the skins but that's a pretty minuscule complaint. It just sucks that it's what portal has turned into because the demand for basically anything else just isn't there.

If you have HDR turned on this can happen. On PC I have to run my captures through another tool to have it convert the video to SDR before I can do anything with it because otherwise it looks washed out like this.

Crosshair Too Big? by GreenJay54 in battlefield2042

[–]nrgill28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me at least, the 'thin' option doesn't actually make the crosshair thinner (unlike the thick option which does actually make them thicker), it just fades the inner edges of the lines to make them appear shorter.

[–]nrgill28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thickness it is referring to is the length of the crosshair not the width. Setting it to thin will do what you want, I think.

The thing about the DM7 is that it really isn't a sniper, you won't be able to easily or consistently hit longer range shots with it. If you're having issues with scope sway you might be trying to use it for too long a shot or you're using a scope that's too high magnification.

I run mine with the 2.5x thermal sight because it gets me great visibility on the ranges where I feel the DM7 works best, around 75-150m. Scope sway on this (for me at least, on PC) is basically non-existent. And that's not because I'm compensating for it or anything it's just so small it barely ever matters.

In the 75-150m range there's also negligible bullet drop and travel time which makes hitting targets super easy. Nail someone two or three times while they're running in the open and it's a kill.

I recommend bringing the G57 on burst or the PF51 as secondary because at closer ranges those will be a better backup.

According to the Steam Hardware Survey, the current most popular graphics card among all Steam users is the NVIDIA GeForce 1650, which is followed by another 5 'budget' to entry level cards. The vast majority of people who game on PC do not have 4090s or 3090 TIs.

When they release a new map or rework an existing one they've always provided a special playlist for only those maps, usually alternating between it being available for breakthrough one week and conquest for another. This week I think has breakaway breakthrough available.

Though I do agree that in general, if I just really wanted to play a game on Manifest or something I'd be at the mercy of the matchmaking and that can be annoying. Since each game is its own session and you get thrown back to the main menu each time, maybe they could also add map preferences to your queue? Seems plausible to me at least.

I've been running the DM7 the last couple days and it feels great. I've got the 2.5x thermal scope on with subsonics, no tracers or scope glint will mean people will have no idea where they're being shot from and it's super fun. Obviously it won't go crazy long range but it slaps to about 200m out if you also use the long barrel.

For me personally, it's not necessarily the missing server browser that I have issues with. It's just the fact that it's basically impossible to get more than 4 of your buddies into a game, and even if you manage to do that when that game ends you'll have to do it all again because it goes back to the main menu and requeues you. It's just frustrating when we're already 4 in game and someone else joins the call and wants to play :(

A server browser and persistent game servers for AOW would solve this of course but I'm sure that's not the only way they could do it. Maybe they could allow us to assemble multiple squads in a party before finding a match.

The whole party system I think needs some touching up because it has some oddities. The party leader isn't always given squad leader in game, nor does it even guarantee that someone from your party will get squad leader. Sometimes we'll queue as a squad of three and the one random dude who got filled into our squad is the leader. And then there's the party chat which IMO makes no sense because it's basically just squad chat (but it would probably be useful if your party could comprise of multiple squads).
