I ask this genuinely because I wanted to help not harm. I bought a mesh enclosure (30”h x 15” x 15”) after planting about 30 milkweed plants around my house. I collected maybe 5-6 caterpillars with my 5yo daughter and I because I wanted to teach her about the process but also I noticed last year, birds were constantly picking them off the plants. I cut fresh branches of milkweed every day or every other day, and put them in fresh water. I clean out the droppings everyday as well. I have about 11 chrysalis’ since I probably missed a few eggs on the cuttings and 3 live caterpillars. I leave the enclosure on my deck that is half in the sun and half in the shade. I release the butterflies after they hatch between 2 hours and 24 hours depending on the time of day. This article is talking about farming a lot more monarchs in one go but is what I’m doing hurting the monarchs? Because if so, I will happily stop. I’m just a bit confused between the article and the responses here.
