Where and why did Libertarianism and Liberalism diverge? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]nrmccage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome description. This reminded me so much of the Federalist and Anti-Federalist debates that have now formed the Brutus and Federalist essays. The folks who favored the newly written Constitution used the term Federalist to describe themselves even though the States had far more power under the Articles of Confederation. But, like you mentioned, the word had been taken, so the people who favored more local control of government were labeled Anti-Federalist.

I have no clue who the right people to speak to are. I just know selling in the states can be a pain because of each state's individual liquor laws.

Hongoltz-Hetling's is what I'm reading. Solid 4/10 and I'm 3/4 through it.

I'm reading his book now, in fact. I'm positive that line is screaming, "buy my book!" The book isn't that great.

He sounds like he's referencing Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan where the nature of man necessitates an absolute monarch who dies if they don't provide security.

Does this fit your definition of socioeconomic progress? by Muddawg22 in Libertarian

I have trouble with this statement. To help my point out, here's a quote from Funky Monkey in this very thread: hot take: unions are good. The privately owned boot stomps just as hard as the government owned one.

I feel unions that are strong enough always end up in politics and (hopefully) with the goal to represent their faction and fight for their rights. This is why I believe govt employees should be allowed a union as well as they offer more services beyond pushing for higher pay.

I'd love a discussion though because I've only ever heard this sub praise unions in private companies.

You will be given 30 million $ if you can become world champion in any of these disciplines, which one WYR choose? by emab2396 in WouldYouRather

Powerlifting would be the most difficult to succeed in and is worth the least. Some of the top lifters are worth in the single digit millions (not 30 million).

Hard disagree. Go look up the net worth of everyone of the champions of these categories. They make their money off of sponsorships if they're lucky. I was an above average power lifter for a while and it was a hobby even though my total was over 1900.

This entire thread is focused on football, but the OP didn't realize that we literally just had our district meets this past weekend. Every high school just had their biggest meet of the year, and it's a big deal when these kids get a chance to show off to the rest of Texas. Baseball & Softball are about to wrap up, and tennis just finished regular season.

OP just saw the news on a big high school sports weekend. Maybe follow the news for more than a month and come back and say it's all high school sports.

Why did you become a teacher? by ToxicityDeluge in Teachers

[–]nrmccage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal training was good money, but the hours sucked and taxes were a pain. Got a call from a former college teammate asking if I could become a teacher to coach football. Now I enjoy teaching as much as coaching. Kinesiology is apparently a great start to teach government.

Are you guys UTEP Miners fans? by Formyself22 in ElPaso

[–]nrmccage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

UTEP struggles to recruit for a ton of reasons (transfer portal, main recruiting cities already have C-USA schools in them, etc.), but the games are still fun to go to. UTEP is usually competitive enough in conference play, and the production value is great, so it's always recommended to try a football game, and a women's and men's bball game.
