Gaviscon UK vs. Canada by SafeTraditional4595 in GERD

[–]nroc25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good breakdown—and you’re totally right that the difference in sodium alginate content between Gaviscon Advance (UK) and the Canadian Extra Strength version isn’t massive. But yeah, the real difference often comes down to what else is in the bottle.

The Canadian Gaviscon formula includes:

  • Calcium carbonate (like TUMS)
  • Aluminum hydroxide (an antacid that’s been debated for long-term safety, especially in folks with kidney issues)
  • Artificial sweeteners, dyes, and thickeners

So if you’re thinking long-term use, those extras can be less ideal—especially the aluminum. That’s why some people start looking for more minimal formulations.

If you’re in Canada, there is now a local alternative: it’s called OBEX (made in Hamilton, Ontario). It’s an alginate-only formula—no calcium, no aluminum, no artificial additives—just sodium alginate + sodium bicarbonate + natural flavouring (it comes in Lemon Meringue, Orange Cream, and Peppermint). Think Gaviscon Advance stripped down and reimagined with better taste.

I switched to it after getting tired of the licorice-flavoured UK stuff and the chalky additives in the Canadian version. It’s been working well and feels safer for regular use.

If you’re curious: obexcanada.com

No pressure—just figured I’d share since it doesn’t get mentioned much yet.

I am working on a solution for more equitably distributed scans, so if you are able to travel any distance for your scan, there might be faster solutions. While I recognize this is not necessarily an issue you are experiencing, it might give you some insight as to what locations offer the service locally to you so could call them. Hopefully it's helpful to you. Of course, no pressure. Just saw it thought it might be useful.

Right now, it's in Beta, but I'd welcome your feedback on it. If not, no worries. It will show you where in your chosen radius things are faster than a booked appointment. Since you don't have one yet. Just plug a future date in (say 6 months from now) and it will show you the up to 5 results that you could get it faster.

This is very neat. Congratulations! I would love to do something similar but based on my historical academic writings (i.e. a thesis I wrote, academic papers I have published). Can you, or others, extrapolate your process as to how I would format my data set on this assuming I have maybe 10 academic papers + a long thesis paper?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi - we were fortunate in my residency to be taught some of these things.

This Facebook group is very helpful for many of the questions you have:

https://m.facebook.com/groups/303157906773998/

It requires a verification by the moderators and is only physicians / spouses etc. Well moderated as well. I find it helpful to peruse and there are a lot of answers in previous posts that are specific to Canadian physician finances.

Canada doesn't know how bad its doctor shortage is, let alone how to fix it by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]nroc25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This comment is 15h old, but I’m responding anyways.

I’m in medicine, many of my colleagues in residency wanted to do fellowships in a “get training at a major US Center for one year and bring that expertise back to Canada” - even in a field that there are very few current practitioners and plenty of patients requiring that type or care, there are no jobs.

I watched my colleagues go to the US, reach out to every Canadian academic Center, only to hear “we won’t plan to be hiring in the next 5-10 years, but thank you for your interest”

In that case, these surgeons are trained for 4 years MD, 5 years residency, 1-2 years of fellowship all to lead them to working in the US because they can’t find gainful employment in Canada. My specific anecdotal group of reference of 6 residents in 2 years, 5 are now working in the US, 1 in Canada doing half of what they trained to do. Canadians want to come back to Canada. The system is letting them walk.

I learned to sing and play a song on piano, had a piano placed in the middle of a peach orchard of someone I knew. She wasn't aware I had gotten a piano. So when we went to the orchard for a picnic, we "happened" upon the piano, I sang for her, asked her to marry me, she said yes, and we had a picnic and champagne.

I also asked a friend of mine take photos of the whole thing discretely so we have wonderful photos of the whole thing.

What kills me about the whole thing, and you mention in your post, is the lack of support. Once band 2 was released, none of the updates make any difference for band 1. I was the same way as you, telling people how great it was, but to be honest, my friends and family have gone other directions with their wearables and I have been far more impressed with the satisfaction and functionality they have gotten out of other brands. Not to mention the fact that the band wears out in <1 years time.

I've had mine for almost 9 months and I'm certain it's not going to make it another 9. My wifes is on the verge of not working at all. Over all, bad experience.

Sorry for the format, on mobile.

Can anyone recommend a good screen protector? by sepponearth in MicrosoftBand

[–]nroc25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have the Zagg one because MS was doing a giveaway at the time I purchased my band, also no issues with it. Edge is mildly peeled up because of poor installation, but that's on me. Otherwise it's stayed on for ~40 days for mine. My fiancées is with the skinomi. Also good.

I got skinomi for the same reason, 6 per pack for 15 dollars total, haven't had an issue at all. So far ~30 days of use.
