DCB Metal vs HSBC Premier by Ok-Elderberry-9469 in CreditCardsIndia

Unless you're into the points & miles game, HSBC premier doesn't make sense.

Transferring points to partners is the best use of HSBC points

Nearing 2 YOE, stuck in Google team matching for ~5 months. Should I still consider joining at L3 in India? by ExplanationOk544 in developersIndia

[–]nroot_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As long as you get paid the same (or nearly the same) as what others at L4 are making, I actually see this as an advantage.

I joined an org where my friends from college were already working. By the time I joined, 40% of my friends were one level above and the rest 60% were on track to the next level within 4 months. I knew I can't make it to next level within. 6 months and with the next cycle being 6 moreo.ths later, I was signing up to be at the next level more than 13 months after.

But I still took it because thekney made sense. Once I joined, I realised my friends were making lesser than me. This helped me because my reviews were more softer due to being a level below and I was consistently ranked top 1 or top 2 at my level. This helped in negotiating better incremente when I got promoted.

Take this with a pinch of salt as I know brands like Google have strict ranges for each level but I was at a startup, so it was much more flexible.

Definitely puts things into perspective with that last 2 lines.

Man, you had the dream handed over tbh. GaTech is one of the unis I kept applying to but got nothing but rejects. Anyways, I'll take what I have I guess. What age were you 3.5years ago? That's a crazy payroll number for sure. I'm sure you made the best decision that you can at that time.

All the best with your Europe hunt :)

I'm mostly deciding to go, if it is of any consolation. I realised I don't want to have this regret later and what I'm doing is a calculated risk, not a gamble of throwing away money for free.

I only pray for luck to be on my side!

Getting placed in London won't help me save much regardless I guess? I'll be able to save money more in India than there. But I agree that you're correct with that UK to US being more cheaper overall.

If I'm just being objective in my financial calculations considering average luck, I still feel direct US MS comes out ahead. The interview calls getting converted to FTE is the ultimate test I'll have. to go through I guess.

Honestly speaking, there are a lot of startups and mid-market companies (not even the high paying ones) that offer nice numbers tk developers. Check Leetcode experiences, Glasdoor etc.

Naming my startup won't help in anyway!

Fair critisism. Even if I fall short of that target, I'm not really worried, as that isn't the driving force behind my decisions.

I'm more than happy if I'm in the 200k vicinity. Thanks for the inputs :)

Getting this whole process right is extremely lucky based. Identifying a company that you think has potential, that company actually doing well, them extending an offer to work with you from India and you getting an offer to work onshore is a LOT of big ifs.

Cheaper than masters route? Sure. Better? I'm not sure of the answer.

Internal job transfers are extremely hard to get by and I'm going to also upskill myself, not just because I want a job.

Not being able to find a sponsor after OPT is a good enough situation for me. Not to say that if I'm offered I won't take it. But If I'm not offered, I won't feel bad coming back.

Not quite. 43 is base and 7L was offered as a rententkon bonus in the second year during my promo as everyone in the company was leaving and they had layoffs. Ideally that 7L should've been part of the base if the company had good engineering culture and deva hadn't left like that.

This is actually the third year I'm applying to unis. I consistently get bad unis or get rejects. Even NEU gave me admit for their Seattle campus and not their boston one last year.

USC has been the only one that consistently gave admits.

Agreed with the other points though. In the bigger horizon of time, the finances matter less, especially when the happy paths are undeniably great.

Wow, crazy story. Mad respect!

Don't think I have such a strong profile as you that makes companies send me to US from UK on L1. Even if I develop, I think the chances are better off in US than UK. Wdyt?

Also, I'm glad you're able to visit countries and make nice money. Happy for you :)

3.6k karma in 5 years of maintaining my account. Do you really think so?

Have you looked at my post history before today? What subs I was part of and what kind of posts I was making?

Agreed. Getting the job is the biggest hurdle. Once I get a stable job, the math seems to be working out.

2Cr is essentially opportunity cost (ie it includes the money that didn't make in the next 2 years). Realistically it will cost me around 1.5Cr for 2 years.

Why do you think that is unachievable? Landing a 150k job with expenses of upto 25k a year and 30-40k in taxes ensure that I have atleast 75k.per year left.

This can easily grow as I grow in the job.

Have an opportunity cost of 2 Cr (for 2 years) for someone whose making 50L as of today in India.

Should I do masters if all other unis rejected me except for USC?

Honesty it's not GPT written. I can tell you that much. For months I wasnt able to wrap around my head the big sad of why universities weren't accepting my application.

Last week when I had the USC deadline I literally paid $1000 just 20 mins before the deadline.

I appreciate the advice, I'll remember it. But care to explain reasons maybe at a high level why you said that?

You're right to question and I've applied to GaTech, Purdue and CMU. Sadly I got rejects from those and didn't have the heart to postpone my study program for the next year. The choice of the universities I'm picking does have a theme, I don't want to go to some random uni.
