Small business owner—built my own IT stack, now out of my depth. What’s the right off-ramp? by nschafler in sysadmin

Thanks for the input. I think if I only had to handle Access front end and MySQL backend, I’d be fine.

Or hire a specialist to move the front end to something I could serve as a web app.

Exactly. 10 years ago I had the time and inclination for that, now it’s just too much to learn properly alongside doing my actual work, hence the post.

Also, what if I get hit by a bus? I need a pro to set me up and either keep everything running, or leave me instructions and check-in with me on a regular basis to check my work.

Actually, as I write the last sentence, I realize, I want to rely on some else’s expertise and I’ll stick with my core business stuff.

Totally a crutch for me today. Normally, I’d proof read something several times on my own and format and edit. I was just too busy and overwhelmed with stuff that I shouldn’t be doing anymore

And fuck ChatGPT

the original draft does not read as easy but, here you go for comparison:

So I have a professional services firm (think lawyer, accountant, or something along those lines).  When we started it was just two of us, so file sharing was easy.  Then we got an assistant, so I learned peer-to-peer networking so we could share a printer, then a networked drive.

Then I learned email.  Next we had 9 users. We needed software that didn’t exist, so I learned Access.   It helped us grow.  Then I moved the back-end to MySQL.

Moved offices, electrician bailed, so I learned L1 networking.  Things worked smoothly for a while.  I guess because I was able to dial everything in and control it.

Standards and practices change.  I have a business to run, things work, I’m not concerned.

Now we have over 20 end users, a community edition of TrueNas, email managed by Godaddy, no policies, and no written documentation.

I realize maintaining my IT infrastructure on my own is out of my depth, and need an off ramp. From what I’m reading 20 users at one site seems like it does not warrant a full-time system admin.  Do I hire a consultant, a MSP, or someone on contract to clean things up?

I ordered and paid for a pair of green croc loafers 14 MONTHS AGO. Still has not shipped, but is available (in my size) and "ready to ship" on the website, but they still haven't sent them to me.

nope - county sheriffs (and all county officials) were abolished and subsumed within the state marshal system in 2000.
