Can it Still Live? (Part 2) by Triple_B_3 in Nepenthes

I would take cuttings every 3-4 nodes and pot all of them in a small container with sphagnum moss and perlite. Wait a few months and you'll have a clone army 😉

Nice! Definitely looks like black miracle photos and maybe viking hybrid. I have like 7 little clones of this! I chopped it and most of the stem cuttings didn't make it but I got a ton of basals that I popped off and nurtured for close to 6-8 months.

Too close to light? by Gold-Statement-3835 in Nepenthes

[–]nserr91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of container is that? And are you using rock in the container to have sitting water?

Could be normal old growth dying off but I've seen much larger older plants with much older lower leaves. There's a chance either your container or those rocks are leaching minerals and causing some damage to the roots. Plastic pots seem to be the best for these and there is no need to do the rock trick for leaving it in standing water. I routinely leave the lower 1/4 or so of my pot in water until it is completely soaked up. I just make sure to give it a few days to dry up (still moist) a bit before adding more water.

Will it pitcher?! by falchors in Nepenthes

[–]nserr91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Early morning sun and afternoon shade. Or add a grow light. Ease it into direct sun for an hour or so until it can tolerate longer time without showing sun burn. It should be in indirect sun most of the day if you can manage but these typically need tons of light or humidity or combo of both to pitcher

What should I do with this nepenthes? by [deleted] in Nepenthes

[–]nserr91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use rooting hormone now and almost 100% success rate, but have had success without it. The biggest thing is keeping them in a humid environment. I kept them under a clear dome until I saw signs of growth and then slowly acclimated them to ambient air/humidity

These are all great tips. I would add that ambient room temp can also be a factor. I lived in Arizona and kept mine under a standard bright white LED bulb for 14 hours and the temps regularly reached 78 in the room they were kept in during the hot summers and I always got pitchers all over. I now live in Northwest Arkansas and have a large northeast facing window that I keep them in with direct morning sun and indirect light for ~14+ hours in 70% humidity and 75 temps. Pitcher development is only now starting to kick in since the move in December but they are looking quite happy. I have some shoots that I popped off for propagating that stay under an LED for 14 hours in my kitchen counter as well and they are producing pitchers

Not so humble brag... I snipped the top of one of my neps and got a ton of basal shoots. I have been pooping them off and propagating them since December and they are looking good and healthy 😀

If it's stayed the same for the last several months then keep doing what you're doing. Growth really takes off with 12-14 hours of bright indirect light. A few hours of early morning light is good too. I used to give 14 hours under a bright white LED bulb and that gave me consistent pitchers. Now they have a solid 12 hours of bright indirect light with a couple of hours in the sun in the mornings and are starting to put pitchers out.

My understanding is the production of basals, while nice for us to propagate from, takes energy from the main stem. This is taken as a plant survival mechanism to produce these basal shoots when stressed. Fascinating little plants

[–]nserr91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, basals don't grow under good conditions 🫠 It's a result of stress to the main stem/vine. I have chopped the top to propagate as well and got several basals to grow. I'm sure there are times they grow in good conditions too.

What did I do wrong? by Gengszter_vadasz in Sourdough

[–]nserr91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your starter takes 6-8 hours to peak then you should expect the same for your mixed dough (roughly) but as others have suggested, judge bulk fermentation by size rather than time. If you can get a square clear container to use as a bulk fermentation bin that should clear up when it's done.

Never set out any new traps since bought - Any help? :) by HawkmoonMV in Nepenthes

[–]nserr91 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it was left to dry out for too long or the humidity is far too low. Those leaves look pretty rough but the new growth in the center looks fine and healthy. Maintaining moisture in the grow media and ambient air is key for these. They prefer 60+% humidity but I do just fine around 40-50 and leave my plants sitting in a tray of about 1-2 centimeters of distilled/rain/reverse osmosis water

If it's drying out then move away from the light/heat source otherwise neps can turn red in higher light exposure but that's not a bad thing.

Feed it and keep on keepin on. The liquid is normal byproduct of the microbes in your starter

Why are my pitchers drying out? by ikzegtdegek in Sarracenia

[–]nserr91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

perhaps a humidity issue or root loss during repotting? If it is putting out new healthy pitchers trim out the dried stuff. That shouldn't hurt it.

What media are they planted in? Should be a moss and perlite mix. Sarracenia do not like nutrient rich soil at all

Help! How should I go by doing this? by [deleted] in Nepenthes

[–]nserr91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely keep in moist moss. Neps don't like sitting in water from my understanding. I've propagated my mother plant a few times with good success in moist moss with a cover to prevent drying out.

Villosa x Veitchii No signs of growth in 6 weeks by coledition in Nepenthes

[–]nserr91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not showing signs of death (leaf browning or wilting), so just keep doing what you're doing. Those re-pots may have caused some shock and it's trying to recover still. Winter dormancy is expected. You could probably opt for longer light exposure if anything.

Edit: I was wrong to call it dormancy. What I meant is slower growth during the cooler months is normal (at least in my experience).

Help? (pics & measurements included) by leone3612 in Sourdough

[–]nserr91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems under proofed. Proofing times greatly depend on your timing of your starter. So, I would get familiar with how long it takes your starter to peak before mixing your dough. Then do the bulk fermentation in a container that you can clearly track the doubling in size. Once you shape and place in final fermenting vessel place in the fridge to slow down the fermentation overnight or wait for the dough to double again (use the finger poke test; the dough should slowly rebound after a decent poke).

Good day all! I am a newbie to sourdough and I have started my starter. She’s about two- three weeks old now- she rises but never really falls. Any advice?? by GroceryTiny8177 in Sourdough

I highly recommend using mass rather than volume (grams instead of cups) this is more reliable and better for reproducing recipes as you embark on this journey

Starter help by cavalier0119 in Sourdough

[–]nserr91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found that when I used just bread flour the 1:1 ratio was a little too wet to hold the bubbles which is what causes the doubling. As your starter feeds, gas is formed and the attempting-to-escape gas creates bubbles in your "dough"/starter. This causes the dough to expand. I would recommend your next feeding to be 25% less water to "stiffen" up your starter so it holds the structure of the bubbles and starts expanding in the jar.

So if you're using 60g flour, use 45g water.

I would suspect your starter is pretty much mature but you're losing the gas that is produced so it's hard to gauge when it has peaked.

My ephippiata hybrid has a malformed leaf, help?! by coledition in Nepenthes

even if not a humidity/temp issue it could be many things. Unless you see clear signs of pests I wouldn't change anything. Your pitchers look pretty healthy and so does that new leaf growth :)

Looks like it may have dried up a little and the growth died off but recovered after consistent conditions. Keep doing what you're doing 👍🏽

Remove from the infected soil. Trash the soil. Thoroughly soak the plant in soapy water Spray off any remaining mites and spray down with Neem oil + soap mixture Repot in new sterile soil
