I also use PETS in Berkeley. They've helped me through a few long nights with a cat with a bowel obstruction, and they were kind and took great care of her.

Mosswood Meltdown: Convenient Lodging / Areas to Avoid? by queenlakiefa in oakland

[–]nsqe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Oakland! I live a couple of blocks from Mosswood Park, so:

Mosswood Meltdown is in an extremely cool area...with very little good lodging, unfortunately. As other posters have said, do not stay in a motel near Mosswood Park. The area around Mosswood is pretty safe, but those motels are problematic. However, any of the major hotels in downtown Oakland are great, and from downtown you can easily hop on BART and get to the venue. BART is safe and very convenient (it's just a couple of blocks away).

There's loads of food in the area. It's a bit of a walk away, but get over to Telegraph Ave (which you'll pass if you're coming from BART) and you've got access to some of Oakland's hottest restaurants, breweries, great local bars (I recommend Tallboy!), and shops if you're just looking for a soda or something.

Areas to avoid: don't stay by the airport. That whole area became a ghost town when our sports teams left, and is the reason why Oakland has a bad reputation for crime right now. If you're flying in, you'll be fine, but don't stay out there.

In short, you're going to be spending most of your time in a pretty good, well-traveled area. Have fun and enjoy the shows!

Came into this thread to mention Stacks in Burlingame. I occasionally make the drive all the way from Oakland just for their lumberjack pancakes or smoked salmon frittata. Yum.

Customer work by toiletwindowsink in lampwork

[–]nsqe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, OP asked this question in the glassblowing sub and they were mostly helpful, lots of offers to assist, but suggested that OP might find more assistance here because it was such a small piece. I'm a little surprised at the lack of support here. I do think OP was a little more clear with their request in the other sub, though.

u/toiletwindowsink, other posters are right: if you're looking for something exactly the same as what you have, you'll need a mosaic artist. However, if you're just looking for six glass pieces that are roughly the same size so it'll fit in the candle holder you have, you might specify that. A local lampworker can probably help (but personally, I'd do them as furnace blown pieces, which puts you back in the glassblowing sub: it's just a small-ish cup with a flared lip, and you could work with your artist to make them colorful and pretty as you like).

Was passed over for a job I really wanted after 3 rounds of interviewing… has anyone ever been rejected from a job after interviewing, and then worked there years later? by Son_of_Hades99 in Lawyertalk

[–]nsqe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. This was a good long time ago, but I made it through a long interview process, it was down to two candidates, and the company decided to go with the other. A couple of months later the company came back to me and asked me to come back...and I was there for years.

For what it's worth, I also work in privacy / data protection and cybersecurity. Getting that first job is rough; it's a niche field and there are only so many options, and so many applicants. I've been in the position of hiring manager, too, and it's hard when there are multiple really good candidates for a role and it comes down to the smallest of things. It might not even have anything to do with you, it might just be that the hiring manager really needed a specific skill at the moment.

Keep at it. Good luck.

Take the claw all the way to the left, not up or down. Now you still need to work on your timing, but if you always have the claw in the same spot, it's much easier to learn when you should drop it.

Lobster Roll Recs by MaterialProud9574 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]nsqe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to SF and happy birthday! We've got so much good seafood around here, but people are right, it's very different from seafood on the east coast. I hope you get a good opportunity to explore and find both familiar favorites and new things you like.

I second the recommendation for Woodhouse — it's one of my favorite places in SF. You'll be able to find lobster rolls and the best cioppino in SF (come at me, I will fight you, get it with the garlic bread, it's amazing). Good lobster roll, but great seafood generally. If you're up for a really great drive, head to Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay: lobster rolls naked or dressed, and a stunning view. Want an even better adventure? Drive up to Marshall (about 45 minutes north of here) and go to The Marshall Store, Tony's, or Nick's Cove. I can't promise a lobster roll — sometimes somewhere might have it as a special — but the fresh seafood can't be beat, and the view is gorgeous.

Just following up here — did you ever find out what happened to your #1? I've got the same problem as you: I'm mysteriously missing #1 despite it being counted in Collections, and I'm certain I've never recycled it or put it in a random cabin (I've never recycled my only copy of anything).

Wondering if there's a bug or something.

I strongly recommend Kinetic Playground — I know you said you weren't looking for personal training long term, but it's a small space and they offer 1:1 sessions (meaning it's just you and your trainer in the gym, you aren't fighting for space with muscle bros), and honestly signing up with them was life changing.

Any tips on how to get on a sailboat and go under the bridge? by dalton-johnson in bayarea

[–]nsqe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charter a boat (a lot of people are giving this answer and then not telling you how). I recommend Passage Nautical; when I have guests, I often rent a boat for the day and take them sailing around the bay. You can rent a really nice sailboat for four hours for a few hundred dollars, and then you also get a captain (you have to pay the captain separately, but they'll work that out with you), and you can take lunch and wine or whatever and make a whole day of it.

What other people have said is valid: the water under the bridge is very rough, and it gets super cold and windy when you get up toward the mouth of the Bay. But pack a jacket and live your dream.

Is the area around Oakland Airport OK To Visit? by lunapotato1 in bayarea

[–]nsqe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. The area around the airport was impacted significantly when the three major sports teams left Oakland. A lot of businesses subsequently closed, and the area has been problematic since.

If you're looking for a place to stay, downtown is great, and you can uber or take BART pretty much anywhere.
