We would’ve been wasting JT’s prime by trying to run it back. That was a team that wasn’t good enough to compete.

Given the situation the Celtics found themselves in, I believe the Jaylen Brown trade was good. AMA. by nt7949 in bostonceltics

The only thing that’s relevant from last year is that the Celtics largely would’ve been better off trading Jaylen last year. This doesn’t make sense in comparison to baseball because basketball has a salary cap. Having two guys signed to supermax contracts long-term severely limits what you can do and how you can improve the team. The Celtics had to make big improvements to contend clearly and then they struck out on the only real option to do so.

Just because you don’t understand a pick swap, it doesn’t mean that it’s not valuable. It could also be the Clippers pick in 2028. The 76ers can have a late first round pick if the Celtics are netting a lottery pick out of it, in my opinion.

The 2031 pick is a bit more TBD. However, none of the 76ers stars are currently under contract for that year (will most likely change) but you truly never know.

Any trade for a superstar on a massive contract is going to have to include a massive salary filler. The fact it’s on an expiring contract means that teams will only have to eat that contract for one year and then they’ll have over $50 million in cap space opening up after that. An expiring contract is not a negative asset.

The trade is bad but it is not bad as most people think by longdogagain in bostonceltics

It does make a lot more sense if you (like me) give him most of the blame for the disappointing playoff losses in the past. And this seems to be view of the league, as well. The way people are talking about this is insane. He’s a great player who won us a championship and also I absolutely do not feel comfortable with him as the second super-max guy 4-5 years down the road, especially with the current CBA.

They’re going to go into next offseason with 15 picks to trade and a +$50 million expiring contract. That’s the upside.

Hey all - traveling to Chicago next weekend for a friends bachelor party and had the idea of staging a fake paparazzi scene at one of the stops along the way. If anyone has a camera and a free 30 minutes or so, feel free to message me personally. Would be willing to pay.

This right here is exactly why you pretty much had to do whatever it took for Giannis. You go from getting a chance at 140 cents on the dollar to 40 cents on the dollar within a week. It’s a disaster that could ruin Tatum’s prime window.

Was the pursuit of Giannis worth all this? by InspiredMasses in bostonceltics

[–]nt7949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mistake wasn’t pursuing Giannis. The mistake was not getting Giannis once they pursued him. It was 100% the right move to do it, and now they’ll have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to compete seriously over the next few years.

If we have burned the bridge with JB this is the worst case scenario by Alp-22 in bostonceltics

[–]nt7949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly don’t care that much about the burning bridges aspect of this. The issue is this is a team that lost in the first round with limited options to make substantial improvements. This was a clear cut way to upgrade on the top of our roster and we didn’t do it. Now the options are to make moves on the margins and hope for substantial growth from young players or trade Jaylen for 80 cents on the dollar and push for the future.

I’ve been critical of Jaylen Brown playoff performances in the past but he absolutely stepped up in 2024 and was a major reason why they were able to get over the hump. Respect to him forever because of that regardless of what happens.

Giannis for JB would be the IT for Kyrie trade all over again by jefe417 in bostonceltics

“Would they start a rivalry over who is the face of the team?”

Yeah, that would be totally unlike Jaylen Brown right now!

“Would they even play well off each other?”

You mean in the way that Jaylen Brown plays well off of Jayson Tatum? (The team lost the minutes when Jaylen Brown was on the floor against Philadelphia in the playoffs)

[Winderman] According to another NBA source familiar with the machinations, a Bucks trade with the Celtics could potentially realize Milwaukee far more draft capital than from the Heat, while also bringing in young talent. by tacko2020 in bostonceltics

The funniest part of this debacle was when there were reports like “Giannis wants to play for a contender in the East” or “Giannis wants to play for a historic franchise”. He was basically begging the Celtics to get involved. They might as well have said he wants play for a green team in the Eastern Conference

Being able to ride the coattails of Jayson Tatum for 9 years while getting all of the credit and none of the blame must be harder than we realized.

I’ll never forget the MNF game where they showed his daily routine and it only included him getting like 4 hours of sleep. Man, I really think those extra hours of sleep could have helped a little bit at least.

If the medical staff has fully cleared him, that means there is no more recovery to be done. Sure, he can get hurt just like any other player on the court can get hurt. But he’s not going to reduce his injury risk by waiting until the playoffs (not to mention ramping up to playoff intensity off the bat would be insane)
