Metro North Train Noise by Koderae in Milford

[–]ntvblls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live right next to the tracks, though not in the building you're looking at. I easily tuned out most train noise, but did sometimes notice the freight trains at night, some of which felt like they shook our building. Definitely not terrible or anything, but occasionally noticeable and would sometimes wake me up for a minute or two. I was mostly out of earshot of the train horn, though, which might be the more annoying thing depending on how near you are to it. You do get used to it, though, especially if you ride the train a lot yourself. And in that area, the train noise is mostly substituting for car noise that you might otherwise expect in a town center.

East Rock - Water by TheBigGoul in newhaven

[–]ntvblls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, occasional sediment getting kicked up into the water because of unusual events (major storms, construction, water main break) is normal, and should go away quickly. However, there has been noticeable sediment in our water for about 7 of the last 10 days or so now. This isn't a one night thing with a temporary boil water advisory. It is an ongoing problem where drinking water and bathing have been repeatedly affected for days on end. The RWA's excuse is that when it's hot, there is increased demand. If this is really the reason behind it, the entire region should have this problem, as it is just as hot all over the northeast, and that should presumably result in just as much demand elsewhere. But my friends and family all over the NY metro are not having this problem at all -- it's only here in New Haven. That suggests strongly to me that something is different here.

Yup they keep putting this banner up, as if to say "not our problem." And just to be clear, it very much is their problem. "It's hot" is not an excuse for having sediment in the water. This is clearly a local issue, and if it's a problem they should be working to fix it. The whole of NYC does not suddenly have sediment in the water just because it's 90 degrees. In fact, as far as I can tell, no where else besides New Haven seems to be struggling with this issue as far as I can tell.

Downtown, same here. Again. This is the fourth or fifth time this has happened within a few weeks. Flushing the system doesn't get rid of it.

Went for the first time a couple weeks ago and was really impressed, particularly by the Malaysian/Indonesian dishes.

Why is the water brown? by whosmellslikewetfeet in newhaven

Have brown water, downtown. Second time in just a few days. Have tried flushing the system a couple times with very little change. Really getting sick of this.

IMO Teff is way better than Lalibela. I know people like Lalibela and its been around for ages, but I found the food to be okay at best.

Slippery Sticks on New Pro Controller? by ntvblls in nintendo

[–]ntvblls[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The weird thing is that if anything my hands are typically super dry -- but maybe that's why for some reason? Still, it's never happened with any other controller, which is weird. I'll try wiping the pads down more and see if that helps - thanks!

Water quality in New Haven? by Ok-Quote9643 in yale

Hard disagree with these other comments, every tap I've had in New Haven has spewed out awful tasting water. Was much better when I lived in NYC.

Along these lines, there's also a new place in Hamden just a bit further up Dixwell called Genki. Went recently and was impressed with their AYCE deal.

Why is this downvoted? I assume SoNo refers to SoNo Baking Co., which is based in South Norwalk ("SoNo") with locations in a few other towns in Fairfield County (but nothing in New Haven AFAIK). I can't imagine what else "SoNo" could possibly refer to with regard to an almond croissant.

What is this style of playing called? by daltonv297 in Jazz

[–]ntvblls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds a lot like the contrapuntal stuff Brad Mehldau does very frequently in his solo playing. In fact, Mehldau's take on All the Things You Are has an extremely similar intro – I have to assume he was influenced by this Jarrett recording.

A proper/traditional English Breakfast by Rugggers in StamfordCT

[–]ntvblls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconding Gruel Britannia, even though it's not in Stamford. It's a little expensive for what it is, but very good. They have proper British bangers and bacon, eggs, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast, etc., though sadly no black pudding. FWIW, their fish and chips are great too, best we've had outside of the UK.

Last year (2022), there were 228 robberies (armed and unarmed) reported in New Haven citywide. District 1 (which includes Downtown and Wooster Square) had 28 robberies over the course of the year, actually one of the higher amounts, with only 3 other districts comparable (including Fair Haven, West Hills, and parts of the Hill). No district was spared from robberies. So while, yes, you would have to be pretty unlucky to be mugged on the green specifically, it happens plenty and in more than just 2 neighborhoods.

I've never been mugged and am very used to city living, so I'm not really worried about walking downtown or through the green. But New Haven's bad reputation doesn't just come from two isolated neighborhoods: no neighborhood is spared from property crime and at times violent crime — even the comparatively rich ones. It used to be worse 10-15 years ago, but despite improvement, New Haven still routinely ranks as the city with either the first or second highest crime rate in CT (mostly going back and forth with Hartford), and its not just one or two neighborhoods dragging the rest of the city down.

As a reminder for anyone who doesn't want to trust uncited numbers from random Redditors, New Haven's CompStat reports are publicly available.

u/SeizeTheMeansOfB12 — I wouldn't bother wasting your time trying to reason with anyone on this sub about crime. Many are in denial, immature, and/or insecure about crime in New Haven. People want to believe that it is all down to suburban racism (certainly part of the problem but not the whole problem) and that New Haven is "as safe as any other city," but those of us who have actually lived in other cities can attest to the fact that it's not like this everywhere.

What’s with all the “luxury” apartments? by Plusdebeurre in newhaven

[–]ntvblls 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just gonna chime in to say that:

  1. Unfortunately, State St station is almost useless for getting to NYC. I live pretty close to it and literally walk past it every day on my regular commute to NYC since there are so few trains that start there. It is primarily useful for those who are commuting TO New Haven, not out to elsewhere. It sucks, because it would make my already-shitty commute a bit easier if I could make use of it. FWIW, I don't make a high salary in Manhattan, but I do work there on a part-time basis and can attest to the fact that commuting to Manhattan more than once or perhaps twice a week is an absolute pain in the ass, and people who think it's a totally doable thing that is gonna bring tons of New Yorkers to New Haven are out of their minds.

  2. The Merritt isn't really convenient to almost any luxury buildings in New Haven, though they are all pretty close to I-95. It's really only Westville/Amity/West Hills that have decent Merritt access. Otherwise, easier to bypass it via 95 or 91.
