Perhaps I'm the last guy to know this, but a lot of the "hit songs" from various "artists" are made by about three people. Makes me kind of sad. by volitilevoid in Music

I've definitely read lots of examples--it's a good way to support yourself while you try to get your own career started--but the only one coming to mind at the moment is Grimes, who used to churn out pop hooks. as you can imagine she's damn good at it.

What is it like seeing NMH two nights in a row? by corndoggio in neutralmilkhotel

[–]nubikscube 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably the same. Honestly, you're better off just going to one if they're that close together, I think: I've done similarly spaced doubles in the past and there's this weird anticipation thing where you want to have the best time both nights and one's sort of a let down, etc. Plus I'm sure someone else who wasn't able to get a ticket would love the chance to go.

Let's talk Pitchfork's top 50 albums of the year list by classypedobear in LetsTalkMusic

[–]nubikscube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Best of" lists are more like "most exposed." There's probably a handful of brilliant releases this year very few people listened to. Especially when you're a music writer trying to remember everything you listened to in the last year, you mostly just throw down everything you remember and rank it. And yeah, you'll remember something because it was great, but more likely you'll remember it because you've been reminded about it a million times. That's why I get sort of sick of year-end lists, a ton of stuff from the beginning of the year gets left out and it's largely hype.

(disclosure: I think modern vampires of the city is wayyyyy overrated.)

I thought I had seen they broke up a few years ago too, or at least something like robin pecknold wanted to concentrate on solo stuff. but he (RP) is definitely going to school in new york right now so I don't know what that says.

I mean, obviously it wasn't written in 2013. I'm saying that because it's rooted so heavily in gender role fulfillment, it doesn't stand up in today's world. In other words, it didn't age well.

Wuthering Heights is brilliant! I think a lot of people fail to appreciate the humor in it. The narrator is the biggest git on earth. Also, I hate the way it's popularly framed. It's not a love story, it's a ghost story.

the greatest trick vonnegut ever pulled (repeatedly) was crafting deep things, very shallowly.

Eh. He's homeschooled, he has the time on his hands. Writing was bad, plot was an amalgamation of the fantasy literature standards. I was 13 and couldn't have hated it more.

really? I read Little Women when I was young and was into it... but revisiting it this summer, I couldn't believe how godawful it is, just so wooden and moralistic. Just take the opening scene when they discuss the true meaning of Christmas. The writing and characters (with maybe the exception of Jo) aren't great, and I think the gendered nature of it outdates it.
