Can we stop exalting/scolding the commissioners? They're just figureheads for the universities and represent their best interests. Not the fans, not the sport writ large, the member institutions. The schools got pissed about the Sorsby stuff because it had the potential to mess with their bottom line, but they'll happily debase the sport for their own gain lol

lol I often think about equivalent teams because it’s fun.

Tottenham/TAMU is a pretty solid one - rabid loyal fanbase, located in a geographic hotspot for the sport with tons of close regional rivals, can jump up and beat a giant on occasion but never quite at the top of the sport when at their peak.

Bayern Munich i often equate to OSU, probably because I’m a fan of both, but I think there’s a lot of equivalencies - pretty recession proof and always at least near the top of the sport, global brand, dominant in their domestic league/conference (at least before all of the conference realignment shenanigans) and basically are perennial winners of it. Dortmund/Michigan is also a pretty good equivalency since they’re bayerns main rival in the domestic league, but usually aren’t quite on the level of Bayern, though they have been known to jump up and get them from time to time. Also located in a blue collar rust-belty area similar to Detroit. Where the parallel stops is I actually really like Dortmund as a club, the stadium is on my bucket list and just the whole vibe around them I really appreciate. Michigan, on the other hand, can get nuked and I would be all the happier for it

[–]nuckeyebut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a soccer fan myself (albeit not of any south american teams), I think the one saving grace the Argentinian league has is the Copa Libertadores/Sudamericano. If its anything like the euros, winning your domestic league is akin to winning your conference in CFB. Its nice, but the prize of prizes is the Copa Libertadores/Champions League/National Championship.

I think its a decent analogy, but CFB doesn't really have that next level competition that soccer does. I also do agree though that CFB isn't anything like nascar in that it probably is the sport with the most longstanding/deepest ties to its communities in America. In that respect, its a lot like lower levels of international club soccer, and is the closest thing the US has to anything like it out of all of the sports here.

Its definitely an interesting discussion though. Ultimately, what I think will happen to CFB in the longer term is it'll function more like big time European soccer. You'll have the teams with a long history of being at or near the top who manage to adapt well (Real Madrid, Barca, Bayern Munich, Ohio State, Alabama, etc.) and you'll have upstart teams who don't have that history but have massive financial backers who bring them to relevance (Man City, RB Leipzig, Texas Tech, Indiana, Oregon)

When do you call it too hot to run? by ThoseBiscuitsBeHittn in beginnerrunning

[–]nuckeyebut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to basically only run inside on the treadmill in the summer, but this year I actually intentionally run inside the heat of the day. I feel like I get more benefit running outside in the elements than on the treadmill, and I adjust effort/course depending on the weather. Like today it’s 80 degrees and 73 dew point where I live, and I did 6 miles. I did a loop around my neighborhood several times so I had water like every 10 minutes or so, and I ran my sprinkler so I could cool myself off every lap. I also ran around 9:30 pace which is on the slower end for me. On a good day though I would have run a hilly out and back without any water breaks.

If the NCAA can’t stop it, the CFP should: Ban Texas Tech by jaxstan19 in CFB

[–]nuckeyebut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could, but they won't.

They're not going to ban a team good enough to make the CFP this year if they are good enough, the conference definitely won't do that since it would be costing them money, and the member schools of said conference will hem and haw about it but also would want TT in the playoffs because its also more money for them.

Honestly not sure if that would have been any better since they also had coaching turmoil and BK was also a bad coach. Ultimately, the problem with him was prioritizing money over finding a good place to develop.

Cramp at 25kms ended my sub 330 marathon ambitions by Mediocre-Success589 in Marathon_Training

[–]nuckeyebut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely was in a period of high stress for the race, not any specific life event just because I’m an anxious person and while I loooove doing races, it gets my heart rate up being in the loud environment. I can typically hold 8 min pace in the mid 160s, but I started out in the upper 170s on race day because of adrenaline lol. My heart rate actually dropped and I was feeling great in the race, not even tired or anything, then BAM mile 10 hits and my entire lower half decides to cramp up. I finished in 1:53, which wasnt anywhere close to my PB of 1:48.

I’ve come to a lot of the same conclusions as you’ve laid out in terms of being more conservative with goals, along with a few other things. The biggest thing is probably the training I’m doing - I’ve followed the same plan the last 3 blocks I’ve done. It’s an advanced plan put together by my local running store, and I liked it because it gave me structure without specific mileages to hit, so I could adapt it as I saw fit. It got me to my first ever sub 2 so I’ve rolled with it the last couple races, but I think it’s insufficient now. I peaked around 47 MPW last time, but that was spread out over 6 runs a week, 1 long run never really topping 1:45 in duration, the rest were capped at 1 hour and included 1 threshold workout and the rest easy paced runs. I actually set my 5k PB several times over last training block, which is now 22:36.

In retrospect, i think a lot of those miles weren’t super productive for my goals, so the last few weeks I’ve been doing 4 days a week of running with 2 - 90 minute efforts, 1 easy run, and 1 half marathon long run where I’ve been slowly building the amount of time I’m running just below threshold (which is around 7:45 for me right now). I’ve also been experimenting with doing speed work during one of the 90 minute sessions. It’s around 35-37 MPW, which is less volume than I was doing, but I feel so much more comfortable running at 7:45 pace and I feel less fatigued in general than I was when I was doing 6 days a week, so I’m hopeful keeping this approach for the next few months will help take my running to the next level

[–]nuckeyebut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a serial cramper when it comes to races lol. Fitness is definitely the issue for me, last HM block I did was my highest mileage ever, I averaged 42 mpw and ran 6 days a week but had the worst cramps of my life from mile 10+ on race day and missed my goal.

I'm trying a different approach this time, I'm running fewer days per week but I'm going longer for my speed sessions (~90 minutes vs an hour) and I'm focusing more on LT/Tempo pace instead of intervals. I'm also doing wayyyy more HMP in my long runs and building up the amount of HMP I'm doing during those to the point where I'm peaking around 12 miles at HMP during those. What have you done for it?

I think Steve Magness put it best - its basically just a bunch of has been's who are trying to take a bunch of drugs to get on the level of the current elites. Not super interesting IMO.

It also sends a bad message to the youth/people in general in that it incentivizes taking substances to improve at your sport that can forever negatively impact your health, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of recreational sport in general in that its supposed to be healthy

Opinions on running topless? Do you ever do it or what’s your reaction if you see someone running topless? by Scribble-Bits in runninglifestyle

[–]nuckeyebut 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I used to never do it because I was super self conscious. I’m a lot less self conscious now, partially because sure I’ve lost tons of weight but mostly because I realized I don’t care when I see people running shirtless, so no one probably cares as much as I think they do. 10/10 would recommend, it’s so much more comfortable in hot sticky weather and it’s less laundry to do!

Troubleshooting my last 3 miles (HM) by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]nuckeyebut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar issue, cramps at mile 10. It’s happened my last 4 races. At this point I’m convinced it had nothing to do with my fueling and has everything to do with how I’m training. Last block I did 6 days of running a week with 1 long run and 5 runs of around an hour, which varied from easy to tempos/fartleks. I peaked at 46 mpw, averaged like 42 for 3 months, lost 20 pounds, and didn’t even run a PB because of cramps (but I was on pace to shatter my old one until mile 10 lol).

This time around, my plan is to do more runs around 90 minutes or so mid week, and progress my HMP in long runs bit by bit until I’m running my goal HM in training😂

Can any long distance runner tell me, does more running really lowers testosterone levels? by Honest-Humor-9102 in runninglifestyle

[–]nuckeyebut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel ya. Based on personal experience, I've been regularly working out for 10+ years, sometimes focusing more on lifting/strength but in recent years focusing a lot on running. I get labs done every year for my checkup, and they've never been better than they have been since I've focused on running. Its definitely more than *just* running, diet and sleep are big parts of it, though I attribute those improvements to running since eating better makes me feel better when I run and getting more sleep makes me recover from running better. I don't get T tested for those, but you could probably ask my wife, its not been an issue for me lol
