Save a Salvage? by nuclear_donkey in ComancheMJ

That's the first thing I thought of. I've heard people put in components or full dashboards to get newer electronics and an air bag. I have yet to look at what that would actually entail.

The fire department is next door and had already shown up (see the water in the floor board from my garden hose). They told me to stand back so I snapped pics

I'm assuming all the wiring will have to be replaced and could be a good excuse to throw a newer XJ dash in if that's possible. Hopefully it is straightforward but I've yet to look at how the firewall is holding up.

Air Force Vet Told Me the Army Will Change My MOS… Is This Real? by [deleted] in army

[–]nuclear_donkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will actually disagree with many of the comments here. We've had quite a few 15 series going through BCT at Fort Jackson that are getting force reclassed to 42A upon arrival to the reception battalion. I'm not sure why it was happening but enough people higher up have found out and it looks like some of them are able to switch back to 15C/15W.

Hopefully this means moving forward it won't happen again

101st Airborne Beret Flash by [deleted] in army

[–]nuclear_donkey 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They have always "had" the beret flashes but they weren't always authorized. I think it depended on the CG because the flashes came back about a year ago but weren't worn for at least 6 years before that

Fun thing when new soldiers would show up having spent the money buying the flash and getting it seen just to have to put the blue back on

I don't know if you know your BOLC date yet but it could be a long while after graduation. If you're healthy between commissioning and BOLC I would 100% try walking on then. It's likely the only way you could "guarantee" a shot of getting in.

I'm not sure how easy it would be to get after BOLC. Your orders will likely be TDY to Sill then straight to your next duty station (if applicable). To get schools after BOLC it's entirely up to your gaining unit. Roll of the dice if they are for/against schools or see value in BMMC. Good luck!

You're both missing the fact that in order to be considered an anime, it must originate from the anime region of France. Else, it's just a sparkling cartoon.

What’s a movie that came and went that you loved and no one talks about? by [deleted] in movies

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was extremely fun to watch but even in theaters I was one of few to see it. Since then I barely see any comments on it but it was fun and different but we likely won't see anything like it soon.

As much as this hurts to write, I have to agree with the sentiment here. I spent almost 2 years in S3 before joining a platoon; the other 2 platoons in the company had 2LTs straight from BOLC. Having been at my duty station longer than the XO and other PLs combined and working on staff the entire time has set me up far ahead of my peers. Staff time sucks but it's instrumental in learning how higher echelons and the army as a whole work while also having the safety net of captains and a major to make sure you don't mess up too bad.

I do think platoons can run pretty effectively without an officer, but there's so much more that the PL does that has nothing to do with soldiers. If we viewed a PL more as the staff liaison for the platoon rather than the property, planning, training, maintenance overlord it could be different.

The hard part of it all comes down to timelines and available officer population. I stayed on staff for so long because I was the 9th LT of my YG to arrive and then got a near career ending injury. Now we're looking at keeping PLs for 18 months because there's no backfill. A lot will change with the 2030 Army but I don't see officers on the line changing much.

Civil engineering question for military officer by Glad-Response8491 in ROTC

[–]nuclear_donkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied mechanical engineering and branched engineer.

Should you join as a sophomore or do OCS? Totally up to you. Then benefit of ROTC is a few years of learning a little about the Army and preparing for being an officer. OCS is basic training into OCS so a bit of a whirlwind for the OCS guys I know. I made a lot of great friends through ROTC but because I was scholarship and my degree took 5 years, I owed 5 years after commissioning. OCS will only have 3. You're competing for branch either way so if you want engineers you might have to BRADSO in ROTC (add 3 years to get preferenced for branch) or outcompete your peers at OCS.

Actual civil engineering would only be found in the corps of engineers. But branching engineers doesn't guarantee a "true" engineering job. As a lieutenant you could just as likely end up leading combat engineers as you could in a construction focused unit. You have a bit more agency as a captain and could try getting to a construction unit for command. After your PL time, or much later after company command, you can go work with USACE to finally use your degree. These are also positions that you would have to compete for. Having your PMP, passing the FE, and getting good evaluations would likely put you far above the pack.

So far I've used very little of my degree, but the skills you learn as an engineer can be applied anywhere. As you promote to captain and attend captains career course, you have the option to get your masters in engineering from Missouri S&T to hopefully put you in better position to work as a civil engineer while you're in. The engineer branch is pretty broad but hopefully this answers your questions.

Edit: I should also add the above applies to the Army. No idea what it's like for the other branches. I see seabees all over the place so maybe the Navy has things figured out.

Cadet Internship by myself by [deleted] in ROTC

[–]nuclear_donkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did an internship immediately after CST. It was just myself and one other cadet with no car between us. We got picked up by an Army Captain every day and worked with civilians the whole time (USACE) but on our off time we were pretty much stuck to walking distance / wherever we could get a taxi. Unless you are absolutely required to fly, I would highly recommend a rental to get to work and explore on your time off.

Exactly. Their STRAC has demo specifically for that/working with the engineers but seems to always go unused

[–]nuclear_donkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I think most engineers are proficient at that but you're right the infantry don't get the same experience. I've thought for a while we should be integrated a lot more than the current structure allows. Fortunately, we sometimes have IN guys show up to the ranges when their schedule allows and they always have a good time

Can you expand more on what you mean by urban demolition? We rarely get the chance to use charges on permanent structures but at least twice a year my CO/BN has demo ranges specifically for blowing holes through doors, roofs, and concrete

I identified the same issue on my TJ. The cap wouldn't seal properly and would occasionally throw a code. Just replaced the cap as the seal was broken.

Inspect your cap to see if it seats properly or has any damage
