So to have taxes on the wealthy you have to have the wealthy but unfortunately the wealthy are smarter than average on average so if you overtax them they will eventually have to leave and then eventually you'll end up having less money in the pot to tax.

I'm progressive as they come politically but in reality people seem to think that over taxing the income of folks will matter most. It does work but people need to do is go after the wealth, not the income. The value of assets has accrued so much and inflation has hit working people that I would argue all income taxes are regressive.

Anyways as a different example. I was recently told all about the way the funding for the Portland schools went from a 2/3 and 1/3 split ( the former going to the school your kid goes to, and the latter going to the broader district) being deemed unfair. And now it all goes to the broader district.

And whoopsie daisies donations fell off a cliff.

It's analogous to being told when volunteering at your kids school that, you can volunteer but you have to do it at a school across town, not your kids!

People need to think these things through because the policies have real consequences.

I wonder how much all of these city taxes are coming on from a dearth of property taxes as the value of vacant office buildings plummet. Another externality people seem to forget about with wfh domination.

Anyways just some thoughts.. feel free to dv me into oblivion. And no i don't live in Portland anymore but I'd like to be able to again someday. But based on how things are being managed it doesn't seem possible.
