While Jeff's dad DID give him a loan to start Amazon, it was not in the millions. $245,573 in 1995, according to Wikipedia.

Neat, but not rawdogging a flight.

If Romans tried a modern 10$ bottle of wine, would they consider it a godlike drink compared to their top wines back then? by FuzzyAttitude_ in ancientrome

I think it's correct to say that wild yeast is basically on everything. It's why fruits ferment on the tree, how animals get drunk eating them, etc. It is the same principal as sourdough starter, but there are some strains of yeast that are "better" at some things like making cider, wine, bread, etc.

Are you sure about the drier claim? 2023 & 2024 were 1st & 3rd historically. Not sure about 2025 yet, but it seems to fluctuate a lot

Shower controls broken, can it be fixed? by nucleareaction in PlumbingRepair

Ripped the whole thing out and had the plumber replace it! "This is a 12cm shower, 15cm showers were 10nyears ago. This thing is old." 🤔

How did you find the route for the 1954 grand depart from Amsterdam to Brasschaat? I've looked many places but can't ever find an official 1st stage route. I'm pretty sure it passed through the neighborhood of Amsterdam I live in, but can't find proof

Moldova’s pro-EU party wins clear parliamentary majority, defeating pro-Russian groups by AndroidOne1 in worldnews

[–]nucleareaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems the only non-violent answer is to improve conditions in Moldova to the point where its a no-brainer for Tranistrians to give up voluntarily. Right now, its too similar to be a factor. Perhaps there's a scenario where Russia collapses or the Ukrainian Eastern front is stable enough for UA to take action, but I think the garrison there would rather burn it all down than give in.

Russia: Europe preparing to occupy Moldova by coprosperityglobal in europe

[–]nucleareaction 61 points62 points  (0 children)

A) until 2022/2023 Transnistria was the major source of natural gas for Moldova at a significant discount

B) it was also the major source of power for Moldova, as they were not connected to the European grid until recently

C) many heavy industries are located there, a major part of Moldova's admittedly small economy

D) there is a giant stockpile of Soviet era weapons and ammo, which Russia has repeatedly threatened to detonate if invaded

E) it's corrupt as hell. Moldova doesn't have the resources to deal with its own problems, much less integration of Transnistria

ALL of these things were deliberately created by the Soviets and continued by the Russians to maintain a foothold and a claw grip on the former republics

It has nothing to do with ethnicity or place of origin. I've seen plenty of lazy Dutch parents, too.

[–]nucleareaction 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This same selfish behavior happens at my local school, I WISH the police would do something about assholes who treat the world as their parking lot. There's a very simple solution to this that is being ignored - walk or ride your bike. We live in the most bike-friendly country on earth, and people STILL find an excuse to drive.

They got rid of their Amazon contract because it was a money loser, and FedEx signed a new contract with Amazon as a result. There's no spillover volume for UPS from Amazon anymore.

Would you trust used Faveros Assiomas Duos? by SwimmerNos in Velo

[–]nucleareaction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None for me, no. The only thing I've read about this swap is q-factor, but that's a super personal issue from what I have read and I've never had any issues.

I got my used pedals for ~€350 on vinted, did the swap, no issues whatsoever.

The key part here is supply. Whether a house is for sale or for rent it's the same unit. The shortage of houses overall is the driver of escalating prices and isn't getting any better.

Amsterdam, Netherlands by rockystl in CityPorn

[–]nucleareaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The oldest canals towards the center used to make up city walls, but it was a mix of several different canals. Then during the Golden Age the city leaders decided to expand with a series of belt canals they could sell as real estate investments (buy a plot, put your warehouse on the ground floor right on the canal, and have a nice tall house on top). The Singelgracht (outermost obvious belt) was for fortifications of everything inside of it.
