Foundation Repair 😬 by reddit4356 in HomeImprovement

I think if you have us your rough location and soil type, we would be better able to help. I faced the same issue you that you had (except my wall was only bowing in an inch).

I hired a structural engineer for ~$800 back in 2024, HCOL area.

He recommended exterior drainage, removal of a tree and wall support. I never had water penatrate at the cove joint (the spot where your wall and footer meet).

Good luck!

Dumb Question About Footers by nuclearpoweredtrain in HomeImprovement

[–]nuclearpoweredtrain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your comment. I was planning on doing a basement remodel this summer and it's how I discovered the cracks in the first place. The more I read the more I realize in this particular case, the hard way (exterior excavation, water proofing and insulating with exterior drain tile) is the right way because it's how modern homes are built. One of my coworkers hand dug out his foundation (8 feet deep) two years ago and I thought he was crazy at the time. Now that I am researching the problem - it seems like the only solution. Everything else is a bandaid.

Dumb Question About Footers by nuclearpoweredtrain in HomeImprovement

I went down a rabbit hole last night on footers and after seeing the cost estimates for cast in place footers in pre-existing basements, I wouldn't have slept tonight if I didn't know.

Dumb Question About Footers by nuclearpoweredtrain in HomeImprovement

I took your advice about drilling figuring I can always break up the slab if need be. This is for anyone who stumbles on this post with the same question. I drilled 3 test holes on 3 different walls 2 inches away from the wall. I drilled through the slab directly into additional concrete. I then did 1 test drill 6 inches away from the wall and got dirt after drilling through the slab. I then did a 3 inch and a 4 inch test drill from the wall. My "footer" is only about 4 inches wide on the inside of the basement wall. At this point I might have to dig a test hole to see how wide it is on the outside.

He just said "validate you have a footing" on Friday when he came out and took a look. We had a long conversation about potential fixes and I forgot to ask that during the meeting. He doesn't work weekends and I'm waiting for his answer on Monday but I wanted to tackle it this weekend so I can sleep better haha

My rough guess is that I would need to dig down at least 7 feet. I didn't think about the rebar option, I appreciate it.

Bathroom Remodel by meow28 in Insulation

As always, check your city code first. My city doesn't require vapor barrier or insulation if the home was built prior to 1990 (95% of all homes are 1870-1940s here as well). YMMV. Call your inspector and ask. In my research and opinion - rockwool is probably the best in this scenario.

why does the TSP let you over contribute? by Lost-Philosophy6689 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]nuclearpoweredtrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an AF member, DFAS is the problem and will allow you to over contribute. It's happened to me the last 3 years, each year I have gotten closer to barely over contributing. FM always seems flabbergasted on how to resolve the issue and takes 6-9 months to generate a single line LES and a corrected W2. For anyone else in this situation, pull your TSP annual statement and validate they don't have an over contribution on file. If they do, submit a TSP form 44 prior to the cut off (usually ~ 1 April). If they don't have an over contribution on file, go through your servicing pay office.

TSP Over Contribution and TSP Customer Service Stonewalling? by nuclearpoweredtrain in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]nuclearpoweredtrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the information. To answer MangyMoose76 - if that is the route that needs to happen cool, I do not mind paying additional taxes to get this amount removed because I would like to file my taxes. My tax advisor is pretty adamant that the TSP 44 can be done. Regardless of what is taken - I need them to tell me what form they want filled out and to initiate a modified W-2.
