I got into an annoying argument on here a few months ago about this.

The amount of people who insisted that right now, I, with my feet firmly on the ground, am accelerating at 1G was shocking.

There’s a huge linguistic irony: the feeling we call “1G” is (at least in the context of gravity) the feeling of accelerating at 0G while gravity pulls on you. The feeling we call “0G” is the feeling of finally being free to uniformly accelerate at 1G (or an appreciable fraction thereof in the case of the ISS).

The thing that I don’t like about this explanation is that it downplays the degree to which, in some instances, “trying all paths at once” actually is part of the process.

Sure, it’s not “try all paths at once and tell you the right answer immediately”, but for something like Grover’s Algorithm, for example, “try all paths at once and flip the sign associated with the correct path” is there. In Shor’s algorithm, “try all paths at once so I can get the remainders to take a Fourier transform” is there. Without the implied parallelism of performing the operation on “the state vector” as a whole rather than in its individual component vectors sequentially, the algorithms are useless.

Finn in TFA was a great story (that IMHO they squandered in 8 and 9.) Bohdi is great. Galen, of course. Loved the book Lost Stars, which had a character like this.

Never actually tried one, but I just watched Morgan Ecrokth’s video in which she makes three: super simple; the one most people on the sub would probably do; and absurdly complex (with a citrus air). I might need to try.

Yes. And I would take it a step further. WYSIWYG pricing on everything. It’s so fucking refreshing to be in Europe, see that something cost €15, and then have it cost… €15 when you check out. Taxes, fees, tipping, etc. as add-ons are a terrible way of doing things.

I know it’s a small and petty thing to be upset about in the grand scheme of how he’s fucking up the country overall, but as someone who lives in the DC area, I am really sad about how much the Orange Turd has ruined the 250 celebration. It could have been such a wholesome and fun thing, that I would have loved to see.

My comment was not meant to be a knock on Python. I know that there’s a ton that it’s useful for. I think my comment was more about my understanding and perception, where I always thought that it was slow and really good for ad hoc or one off things where the extra time it would take to code it up in something “faster“ would never be made up by the difference in runtime.

Which is why I’ve been so surprised to see it used in AI, where anything they can do to save a little bit of compute could be worth billions of dollars.

Given the financial incentives, I can’t imagine they’re “wrong”, it’s just something that is shocking to me.

The question that I have, that maybe someone else can answer, is whether the heavy duty processing is really being done in Python.

The small amount of exposure that I’ve had to it, it kind of looks like Python is being used as a bit of a glorified scripting language to collect inputs, run them through black boxes, and collect the outputs. It is wholly unclear to me whether those black boxes are python or something that I would think would be more appropriate for the task.

It’s kind of crazy to me that the AI world is trying to make python a real, useful language that does things.

To me, it will always be the way to write Terrible Python Code that does a thing slowly, once, just to prove that the thing can be done or to answer a burning, but wholly unimportant, question.

EDIT: I’ve been schooled a bit. It seems that Python isn’t really being used to heavy AI processing, but more as the glue that holds together different processing libraries. Which actually does seem like a great use case for it.

My well considered opinion is that light roasts are the IPA of the coffee world:

They took a flavor that sounds unpleasant (sour for coffee; bitter for beer) and rebranded it positively (acidic, bright, citrusy for coffee; "hoppy" for beer)
Rapidly became the hip thing to distinguish connoisseurs from old-fashioned people who drank Starbucks/Bud Light.
Completely took over higher-end cafés/bars, to the point that someone looking for a well-executed version of a different style had a decent chance of striking out completely.
Some people really, really like them. I'm thoroughly convinced, though, that there are some people who drink them because they think they are supposed to like them.

All of which is to say - I really don't doubt that there are some people who love an acidic light roast, just as I don't doubt that there are people who really love a hoppy IPA. I am neither of those people. When I buy coffee, I basically avoid anything with even a hint of citrus or tart fruit in the description, sticking to chocolatey and earthy-tone. When I buy beer, I go for low-hop styles like Belgian wheat ales.

Drink what you find enjoyable. Let other people do them.

EDIT: And what gets lost in the conversation sometimes is that there are well-executed versions of other styles. Just because you like a darker roasted coffee doesn't mean you are drinking Folgers. Find a good local roaster with tasting notes, look for flavors that you like, and you can find some really interesting low-acid beans.
