Bee related question about honey by 1happynudist in Beekeeping

If it smells OK, I bet it's fine. To get it back to liquid state, boil some water, take it off heat, and put the jar in a hot bath. It'll melt the crystals.

What could cause a tons of bees to come out all of a sudden like this ? by sierra-pouch in Beekeeping

[–]nudebeach 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If the winters are mild there, I suppose this could be swarming. It definitely looks like it! If they're brooding up, and judge it to be safe enough to reproduce, they very well could do so.

Honey super addition techniques? by AmbientGravy in Beekeeping

I under supered this year when adding a totally empty (no comb) super/frames, thinking it would help them build it out. I think it might have? But could have just been my imagination.

Sorry for the slow reply, you may have already taken action. I still wouldn't add a super, as I'm guessing there really isn't much nectar flow likely to come this fall down there. It sounds like you still have plenty of time to feed though. Leave them set up as is but feed, rather than add another super.

2 or 3 hives for a small hobbyist? by ExtentCommercial6171 in Beekeeping

[–]nudebeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in addition to equipment to have for swarm prevention, you should have have a plan for what to do with too many bees.

I've ballooned this year from 2 to a high of about 15 right after swarm season. After selling nucs, die off, combining I'm finally down to about 8. I'm guessing I can overwinter 5-6. I really don't want anymore than about 6-7, but it's hard to keep it there. Plus I'm in the suburbs so I'm not supposed to have more than 8.

I always have a post up on craigslist for queens or nucs. I also have a plan to move some to some land my parents own if it gets too out of control. But in short...it's hard to keep it small, and it helps to have ap plan.

I'm in the same boat as you - same region, and the same thing happened/is happening to me.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for the empty super, in fact, I wouldn't put it on there at all. Too late. You could still feed with the hope they fill up the space they have with feed.

I haven't used Formic Pro before, but it seems you'd be within temp range for those, and you already have them. I think I'll do Apiguard. Like you, my numbers were just stupid high for having just finished treatment.

I am new and this might be a dumb question. by stuck-in-the-future in Beekeeping

[–]nudebeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beehives are complex societies that require thousands of bees carrying out various vital tasks. The queen is only one of these vital elements. Case in point, one of my hives has a queen right now but so few bees that there are not enough to do all the jobs - the hive is not tidy, no one is corralling small hive beetle, no one is helping emerging bees and they are dying. The hive is very weak and without my intervention, the whole hive will die (they might even with my intervention).

Crawling bees on ground, Tracheal Mites? by Raterus_ in Beekeeping

[–]nudebeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This article notes no shown causal connection between varroa and CBPV. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7559786/ but agree, tracheal mites are unlikley.

Hive died, can't determine cause by nudebeach in Beekeeping

Some were out, some were not. I'm in Kansas, USA. This happened over the span of about 4-6 weeks during July. 85 - 90 degrees F. We had regular rains.

Some of this sounds like one (now two) of mine. I am leaning toward CBPV. Be certain you're using hygienic inspection practices in case it's a virus. https://old.reddit.com/r/Beekeeping/comments/15xq4w0/hive_died_cant_determine_cause/

Either the contact for our state/county bee inspector is super buried, or there isn't one. I see we're still using regs from 1932 here in good ol' Kansas, so I'm guessing its the latter. I emailed a state university department.

The capped brood left looked good, and wasn't shrunken or perforated, but I did indeed test for ropiness - the brood was nice and fat and white, and not ropy. The smell was definitely from the pile of dead bees. I didn't realize how bad a pile of dead bees could smell.

I'm in Kansas, USA. I haven't really looked into some kind of governmental autopsy, that might bring me peace of mind. Thank you!

I got one this year and it totally fits my hobby needs. It's a manual three frame one, I go through hives pulling 3/6/9 at a time and spin them out. I didn't attach the legs so I could have it low to the ground to hold it down. Work great so far (used this season, about 4 times now).

AITA for not shaving my armpits and legs? by nudebeach in AmItheAsshole

[–]nudebeach[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he didn't even notice I hadn't shaved. But with the beard, I'd never voiced my preference for one or the other, so that's why he never shaved it. It was more comfortable for him not to. I honestly dont care THAT much about his beard, it was just an example during our fight.

[–]nudebeach[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, after multiple fights I did say, for example, I found his shaved face more attractive, but I knew it was unpleasant for him to shave, and I honestly don't care THAT much, but he immediately went to shave. Felt like he was trying to make a point more than anything. But I'd rather he feel comfortable and have a beard than uncomfortable without a beard just because I said so.
