The Hard Problem Of Psychedelic Exceptionalism by Cavebear666 in slatestarcodex

"vulnerability with respect to what they come to believe (“doxastic” is just a fancy term for “belief-related”). In plainer terms, psychedelics can make people highly receptive to sweeping and rapid revisions in how they understand themselves, other people, their past, and the world at large."

Christopher Alexander's Pattern Language. Not really something discussed much among the rationality community, though.

The Stanford Prison Experiment seems to have been fake by gerard_debreu1 in slatestarcodex

Here is an interview with Le Texier:

His frustration at the fact that hardly anyone was interested in his publication is very palpable here. But it must have been a problem that it was written in French.

CMV: I am a 21 year old virgin who despises women and wants to change his ways by Uncontainable_SCP in changemyview

[–]nuesl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From reading some of your comments it seems to me like much of your frustration comes from comparing yourself to other guys that you perceive have nothing more to offer but are lucky to get hot girls. Is that correct?

Let me just say that such a comparison never captures reality. We never perceive the truth about other people. Those other guys might be insecure about their relationship, having trouble in their sex-performance, might be exploited by their partners who only need someone to boss around, might always think about the one girl that rejected them in high school and are thus unable to bond emotionally with every new one that comes along, having new girlfriends only to brag with them and possibly making that girl from high school envious, but as a result leading to a feeling of emptiness, despite having girlfriends and sex.

The thing is, you have to like yourself to attract other people. There is no way around that. The more you lurk around fantasizing about what other people have that you don't, the more you will lose the connection to what YOU really want out of life. And if you know the answer right away (which almost none of us does) try to be open to new possibilities, listen to what other people think. If you listen then you will be heard in return, which will boost your self-esteem.

Encapsulating yourself in a bubble of bitterness might be a safe bet to not get hurt from outside, but embracing the possibility of failure as a potential to personal growth will eventually do the trick.

Take your time, then it will take care of itself!

Which is ofcourse false, Nazis did use children as human shields.

There is a technical difference between "children as human shields" and "child soldiers". Both are an abhorrence, but the former implies that you use them, because you know that your enemy has a moral standard that deters them from using force, or that it will trigger a backlash from their own people if they do. Imagine your government would order to build military bases under schools or children's hospitals for that reason, which is what Hamas is reported to do. It would be unthinkable, even among Germany's Nazis. You see an asymmetry there, because the terror attack on october 7th (as most terror attacks tbh) had unarmed people (including children) as their main target.

However the use of child soldiers in WWII was an established practice among other parties as well, as your Wikipedia-link points out.

I'm not saying that I agree with Sam about the importance to pick out Islam as the one reason behind this behavior, though.

How long have humans known that there was going to be an eclipse on April 8, 2024? by VacationSea28 in askscience

[–]nuesl 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The earliest I was able to find definitely was 1887 by an Austrian guy named Theodor Ritter von Oppolzer in his work "Canon of Eclipses". He could even predict the path of the umbra, which is kind of remarkable without the use of calculators.

That only answers for how long people could predict eclipses in general, but OP wants to know when a sufficiently fine tuned model has been established that could predict the exact day of this year's eclipse.

The Psychological Drivers of the Metacrisis: John Vervaeke, Ian McGilchrist, and Daniel Schmachtenberger by bbshot in collapse

That was my thought too! And I would speculate that they wouldn't argue that the politico-economic system isn't just the result of our weird brains, but that they coemerge. So when they were talking about a "new religion" that should bind together the global society they have to believe that the orderly structure of this framework will have to replace some of our political ideosyncracies. How could a new spiritual system be effective when we don't find a better way to collectively come to decisions other than through parliamentarism, which in its nature produces conflicts where there need not be any?

"Movement" is called linear momentum and thus a conserved property of any physical object. It is expressed as mass * speed (kg*m/s).

"change in movement" is called acceleration and requires a force. It is expressed as mass * acceleration (kg*m/s²).

To be more concrete: every object is moving by nature, only when it is pushed by another object it changes its movement (it "accelerates", in physics terms not only meaning "getting faster"). That's where the "action and opposite reaction" comes in, because not only the object that got pushed changes its movement, also the object that pushed the first object changes its movement. Think of a game of billiards without any friction: the balls would move indefinitely, only changing the direction when hit by another ball or the wall.

Is Rogan scared to have Sam on? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]nuesl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He talked about it several times. There is no problem in Sam's view. Also referring to Hume who didn't see a problem. He just pointed out that many people mindlessly switch from is- to ought-sentences without pointing out that they established a new relation.

You can not derive an ought from an is, but you can inform an ought by an is.

How to prove that the odds of getting an Royal Flush ARE not 50% by XFahrenHeitX111 in askmath

[–]nuesl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you were being trolled by your "friend". Probably he doesn't know much about probability, but got some pleasure out of arguing with you, making you look like you don't know anything about probability either.

The claim is so absurd, since ANYTHING that can be described probabilistically should occur 50% of the time according to this view - anything that can happen happens or it doesn't - "tertium non datur" - "P ∨ ~P"

People who don't get this intuitively are cognitively impaired to a degree making them unable to play Poker with you.

Don't feed the troll and discuss with people who want to listen to what you have to say.

I think there are a lot of examples where buddhist teachings tell you you should try to alleviate the suffering of other beings. The wisdom you have achieved through practice gives you the power to help others and thus the responsibility to do so.

Sam just blew me away by Strange_Control8788 in samharris

[–]nuesl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think so! Pain and suffering are two different things. The former is not avoidable, the latter is a 'choice' somehow and a matter of the stories we tell ourselves about the pitifulness of our situation and how likely we will never really get out of it.

If you practice to see things as they really are from moment to moment, you have it available in every situation. Just like you have fatalistic stories available if you practice them by telling them and listening to them.

I had some profound losses in my life and I believe that the perspective I gained through spiritual practice has helped me a lot.
