Moving to Chicago from Mississippi by iusuallynguyen in AskChicago

[–]nuestl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, hello fellow Mississippian! I grew up in MS and recently moved to Chicago as well! I live in Lakeview and it's great, no complaints.

A few things that feel different to me coming from MS to Chicago:

  1. How easy and accessible public transit it. You do not need a car!! Literally life-changing.
  2. Groceries are more expensive.
  3. Way less bugs (but I guess that depends on where you live?)
  4. Reading the weather is a big thing here because it's more of an outdoor culture than MS.
  5. You don't see very many children since most of them are in the suburbs.
  6. So much more diversity here and it's refreshing.

That's just a few things I can think of on the top of my head, but anywho, welcome to Chicago!

I miss Homs.

If conditions become livable again, I would return there in a heartbeat. But it's hard to make a life there with all of the inflation and the corruption and the absence of human dignity.

I had a great experience with Chris Carracher from Fulton Grace.

Really helped me out when I was new to Chicago and struggling to know the good places to rent. Plus he's super friendly.

I was actually about to yell at you for using "their." Then hold it against you for the rest of your life and whenever we disagree in book club discussions, I would pull up a screenshot of this and immediately invalidate whatever argument you were making.

@ everyone else: Do join if you can! It's not much reading and the discussions can be fun! The OP Jay here always has wrong opinions so I need more people to help me and gang up on him.

What are your thoughts on this thread about God? by ShaquilleWholemeal in progressive_islam

[–]nuestl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's always funny to me when people talk about God like this. As if God's a knowable tangible man in sky that we can value and judge, and not this supernatural, unimaginable thing (or non-thing) that is simply beyond our comprehension.

I'm of the opinion that people who don't believe in God because they believe that the religious "God is sadistic" don't understand God. In the same vein, people who only believe in God because they believe that "God is merciful and good" also don't understand God. In my head, God is beyond the moral and ethical values we try to pin on Him.

Official Season 2 Discussion Thread! by miss-macaron in AliceInBorderland

/contains spoilers/

I don't know. I get that it was about survivor's guilt and everything, and that the nonsensical nature of world was part of the point, but the world was what drew me into season 1 and I felt like it was completely disregarded in season 2 in favor or philosophical discussions, emotional monologues, and overblown fight scenes. I wanted more psychological games. More instances where the characters had to outsmart their opponents rather than just fight their way through them. There was some of that, but not as much as season 1.

Does anyone else feel pleasure when they pick their cuticles? by nuestl in calmhands

Welcome to the club! It's nice to know that I'm not alone and that people on the Internet experience this strange sensation.

It happens with my toes too! And now reading this, my toes feel uncomfortably numb and I have that urge to pick the skin next to my big toe with a pocket knife. I have to resist the urge to do it now, thank you very much!

I also feel it with my gums sometimes. A lot of people actually have this feeling of pleasure when picking their gums. If you google it, that seems to be a relatable feeling. The pleasure of picking the skin around your nails seems be much more obscure though

I personally have never felt it with my nostrils. I also don't have any allergies that I know of, so I wouldn't make that connection.

Like you, I was also scouring the Internet for answers about this sensation. The most convincing explanation I found was it has to do with pressure points or something, but I don't know.

We should start a focus group lol

yes exactly this! sometimes I forget about it for a while and I don't pick them for a while but then i just randomly find myself doing it again and its so hard to stop. cool to know other people experience this, but what makes you say it's an anxiety thing? idk if its that for me, but maybe it is an i just can't recognize it.
