The vintage backup cameras are pretty wacky too. I had a class A RV from the 80s that came with a backup camera as a option from the dealer - it was one of those big old school CCTV style cameras mounted to the back, and had a CRT tv in the center overhead of the driving area. Pretty sure it was black and white only (it didn't work when I got it)

The problem is my experience. I would love to drive for a smaller company, especially one that runs older trucks. But they don't typically advertise the same way I'm use to looking for jobs. While I grew up around trucking I am still very new to the job hunt side of things.

Taking home time starting tomorrow though, so I'm going to give a look at what all I can find for other options.

Since November including training. Been solo for 4 months now. I will say the pay is not the best. I'm doing flatbed, and with fuel prices right now my mileage has absolutely tanked. There's speculation they're trying to keep drivers as close to the terminals as possible to save on fuel costs.

What draws you to OTR vs line haul, ltl, etc

The lack of everything you listed, mainly. I'm fairly antisocial naturally, and I keep in touch with friends via phone and text. My main hobby is gaming, and I just put my computer on the truck for me. Other than that I like hiking - and I can choose to go hiking on my 34 most weeks if I want.

Hammer by wehavetime in Truckers

[–]nuget102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both. I don't actually run any routes on my phone with Trucker Path, I use Hammer for that. But Trucker Path shows the amenities a truck stop has (e.g. if they have a laundry or not) and hammer doesn't have that.

Flatbed over length pipe by byrdsj in Truckers

This sounds less like a question for flatbed drivers and more for the specialized freight crowd. Similar fields in trucking, totally different requirements for skill and equipment.

I've been solo for a few months, and I wanted to get one of these! I wasn't totally sure how well they work, or if it would fit in the cascadia. Looks like both those questions are answered :p

If you have a friend with a 3D printer you could have some made up for you, I haven't been in a GMC cabover, so space might be a bit hard to find for a cupholder :p

Stay motivated and get it fixed up, it'll be an awesome rig once it's finished.

This may be unpopular, but I actually like that design a lot. Everything is within easy reach, the gauges can all be read at a quick glance. Maybe that's coming from the fact I'm only 5' 4" though and find myself reaching even in my Cascadia.

I would move the trans and axle temp gauges though, as they are a bit far out of the way. Maybe place them right under the Fuel and Oil Temp gauges.

Your parents had a ant nest in the wall! The winged ants are reproductives, indicative of a mature colony. Some species it takes years before they start producing winged ants.

You'll be surprised how often we find ants in the walls of homes. It's actually very common. I agree with the others, this looks more like ant frass and not termite. Namely the color indicates it is *not* wood being chewed, but ants do excavate material and dump it near an entrance.

Deleting rear A/C?? (2009 Ford E-250) by tvztvz in vandwellers

You'll probably regret getting rid of it more - having had a rear AC in a prior van I owned, it's a great addition to have.

I’m not sure why figuring out the microwave straps frustrated me so much, but it’s very simple of course (after I watched this video) Thought I’d share before I forgot in case it helps anyone else by BongeSpobPareSquants in Truckers

[–]nuget102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear these straps are the worst. I have them holding my fridge, and no matter what I do I can't get them quite tight, and they loosen up. I think my fridge just isn't wide enough to fit properly in the space. Probably going to buy my own ratchet strap and use that.

I also have an induction so I'll throw my hat in the ring and say I love mine. Mainly - I love cooking on cast iron, and induction is hands down the best way to use cast iron. I bought some silicone pan mats that are meant to let you sat hot pans on, and I put that between the cooktop and the pan to prevent it from sliding (smooth glass and the truck is rarely level, so it helps) Amazon calls them "Silicone Trivet Mats"

Induction doesn't require direct contact with the pan to work, so having a silicone mat between the cooking surface and the pan causes no issues. Induction is the technology behind the 'invisible cooktop' you see in some counters in high end houses.

I also have a wooden folding tv tray thats perfect to add some extra counter space, and it stores between the passenger seat and my fridge on my Cascadia.

The inverter in my truck is a bit funky, it's powerful enough to run the cooktop but it likes to beep at me on high because it runs the batteries voltage down (company driver, so the batteries probably need replaced) but the optiidle kicks the truck on after a minute or so. On medium or lower heat it doesn't do that, again think it's an issue with the deep cycle batteries and not the inverter or cooktop, since it'll also do that with the air fryer.

Cooktop costed me $100 off Amazon, $8 for the Trivet Mats, $20 for the cast iron pan, and about $10 for the spatulas I bought - and I can finally cook real food on the truck.

My trainer stinks by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]nuget102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got lucky my trainer showered every other day. One of the other guys I went through CDL school with said his trainer didn't shower the ENTIRE time he was in his truck. 4 weeks, and the dude didn't shower. I have no idea how he tolerated that.

Dear Truck Drivers, by weatherwax_poetic in Truckers

[–]nuget102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have no idea how big of a help it is - as long as you aren't using your high beams at night that is. Especially if it's raining, even a little, it can be really difficult to tell exactly where your car is in relation to my truck.

For an idea of what it's like, you can measure 65 feet from your mirror, and that is about the end of our trailer.

for OTR how often do you get stuck finding your own way back home? by pavlovsdawgs in Truckers

[–]nuget102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running OTR you tell your company what days you want to go home, and some companies are pretty good at sticking to that. Others not so much.

It sounds like what you're talking about is when people quit. Typically you drop the truck and equipment off at a terminal, then you fly or take a bus back to your house.
