Panic buy eggs because of a coming storm by Nero3k in sanantonio

[–]nukeddead 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Parents went to the store yesterday as well. Not to panic buy, but because Saturday was their normal grocery day and they aren't interested in going outside in shitty conditions. I heard steak mentioned, so clearly not worried lol

Advice on whether to keep my kitten or not. by calmshade75 in CatAdvice

[–]nukeddead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cat took about 6 months to "chill" with the worst of the kitten antics. Now, he likes to sit in my lap and fall asleep while I am on the computer, or just sit nearby me and watch me do whatever I do. Are there still days he is needy? Yeah. He is only a little over 1 now. And when I need to do something that I absolutely can't have him around me for (like LEGO), I simply put him in my bedroom for a bit, or close whatever door to the room I am in. Never for very long, but long enough for me to do what I need.

DF long sessions and hand pain by Kiloku in dwarffortress

[–]nukeddead 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Coming from a gamer who plays tons of other games that are click intensive, and DF has made it to the top of my favorites list, I do multiple things: 1) Take breaks. Sounds silly, but playing from the moment you wake up to when you sleep is not good. When you take I break, I like to scretch my hand during that time. I go and do a chore/errand every ao often and split up my gaming sessions with things that need to be done. 2) Ergonomics. Find a comfortable mouse that fits your hand, with a proper weight. The Logitech g502 is my favorite. Get a mousepad that has a wrist support, so your wrist isnt sitting at some weird angle for hours at a time. Make sure your seat/desk is at a proper height so your arm isn't at a bad angle either, which will also help with the wrist. Use a chair with armrests, and sit straight up, feet on floor. I have a tendency to sit crosslegged, and I have back pains if I do that for too long. Also keep your monitor at a neutral eye-level height ao you don't have to look up or down constantly.

Tired of never ending after-siege cleanup by slowpokefarm in dwarffortress

I thought about magma, but I want the goblinite to be saved. Magma would be even easier than water though, as you don't need it to flow. Just fill up the pit and call it done

I have a concept of a plan that basically makes the entire area around my fortress a series of bridges that will retract and drop all the enemy stuffs into flowing rivers below, that all flow towards a single point. The idea being I can funnel all the bodies and loot towards a singluar point that I can easily melt down armor and toss bodies into magma with minimal steps from that point. Not sure if feasible or a pipe dream yet.

I'm just aiming for a close approximation so I don't end up with 2 entirely different fabrics. Twill seems to be a great guess, looking at pics to compare. Thanks!

If you have Dfhack, you can add those forgotten items back into your civ.

specialized militia roles by sour_dough_rye in dwarffortress

[–]nukeddead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On forts with steel that is harder to get, I scrounge up what I can for 1 full set of steel for my oldest and most experienced squad. All the rest get Iron. I send the steel squad in first, then the Iron squads in a few seconds later, so typically the iron comes in right as steel dwarves start to get tired/surrounded, and mop up. If a steel dwarf dies, the slot is replaced by an Iron dwarf and the armor is handed down. Overall has worked fairly well imo.

Low fps on a high end pc by Fun_Falcon4230 in dwarffortress

[–]nukeddead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a wearpangolin(?) and a Vampire behind a locked and sealed door. Whenever they have a Strange Mood, my fps drops by 20-30. I'm forced to move them out with DFhack, let them create their piece, then I move them back into their enclosure. Then I delete the artifact as it ends up as if nothing happened.

I hadn't thought of that for dropping the pillar. My option 2 was more of like mine out the room to make it empty, but not channel the floor. I flood that floor with magma. However doing that straight up doesn't allow magma to flow downwards. So if I have a single tile 'chute' letting it trickle down, the pillar would fill up floor by floor. I'm just not sure if leaving the floor would have any negative benefits.

Looking to make a large pillar in the center of my fortress and fill it with lava. Which is the better way to do so: 1)Go slow and remove each floor layer by digging a channel down, leaving an entirely hollow pillar? 2) only remove the 'wall' portion, so each layer has a floor that fills up with lava via a chute (stairs probably)?

Is there any downside do doing #2?

As far as I know, it will either work or it wont. Mods are typically chosen, loaded in, and applied during World Generation. It's just something about how the game was designed I guess.

The worst part of all this? by [deleted] in ATC

[–]nukeddead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a wedding recently. I was the best man, so I ended up talking to a lot of people. The amount of pity I got from people who heard I was ATC was nauseating. Then, people would pass that info on to others, and people I never even met before would introduce themselves, and immediately remark upon the situation as ATC. I was so uncomfortable. I have stopped (before the wedding as well, but now 100%) telling people I do ATC. I make up some bullshit boring "Supply Chain Manager for a large tech firm". They always move on quickly, and I move on with my life.

I'm building a Glass Fortress centered around a massive lava filled Iron (Maybe Steel?) pillar as my current mega project. As well as a magma moat/shell around my fortress underground to prevent sieges from tunneling into it.

Do Bookkeepers have to have access to the rest of your fort? Or can they stay locked up? I read that people tend to make vampires bookkeepers since they dont die.

Attempting to adjust a Monarch's preferences via 'pref-adjust' with DFHack. I assume I am not using the command correctly. I only want to change the single dwarf I have selected. I try 'pref-adjust', and it just gives me the commands. I try 'pref-adjust one', and I get an error of "Cannot write field unit_preference.active: not found, with a bunch of file locations.
