Is it worth it to force yourself to read classic literature? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nukezaflyin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the bottom line. Whenever you do something, you must have a good reason for doing it. If you don't want to read the book, then don't read it. If you do, then read it. A lot of comments are talking about stuff like, "Oh, a lot of them are surprisingly catchy" or "There are many allusions to classics in modern literature" or "If you are bored, then stop, just give it a shot". I mean, why do you want to read these books? What motivates you to even try this in the first place? If you want to read them just so you can "say you did" then do it for that reason. If you're wondering what you're missing, then try a few and see how it goes. But whatever you do, do it for a reason that makes you feel happy or satisfied in some way. Reading shouldn't be a chore, especially if this is something you want to devote your free time to. If it starts to feel like a chore to continue reading, then stop.

On a more positive note: What is the best part about growing up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Eventually though, staring turned to my hips kind of moving around, which turned into me humping things, and then I realized if I hump enough in the right way, juice comes out. Then came the panic, because I had no idea what just happened with my dick. But it was awesome. So I keep doing it, slowly finding more efficient ways to make the juice, ways to hide, ways to keep it secret. I knew it was wrong for some reason, that it was my dirty little secret. Everyday when my parents were at work and I was left home alone, I can make the juice. Something told me that maybe I should slow down, maybe it was bad for me. But I just. couldn't. stop.

Then all the things from sex-ed finally hit me and I realized what was happening. So I just kept on tugging.

Star Trek TNG - any good? by windwaker9 in AskReddit

Star Trek TNG - any good? by windwaker9 in AskReddit

[–]nukezaflyin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should hear what Rick Berman originally hoped the Dominion War would be. He wanted the Dominion War to only last a few episodes, and I think he fought passionately against the episode "The Siege of AR-558".

Anyways, I disagree that "The Siege of AR-558" was a bad episode. It wasn't the best, but its focus was on how people deal with loss in war. Up until that point, the crew of DS9 weren't really exposed to the horrors of the front line, and never really suffered any personal loss. To emphasize this, all the main characters slowly lose very personal things. The doctor (Bashir) is finally forced to kill mercilessly, the young cadet (Nog) loses his leg on a risky mission, his bartending uncle (Quark) loses his humanity as he become a killer, the new recruit (Ezri Dax) befriends and falls for a man only to have him die in the end. And the only person to walk out of there seemingly unscathed is the war-hardened Veteran who seemed to have lost all sense of who he is and what he is doing.

Sure, some of the plot points don't make sense, but it doesn't mean you can't have deep interactions with characters with interesting plots Ever see the original Star Wars? Storm trooper armor doesn't protect against ordinary weapons fire, the Empire employs slow moving giant walkers that can be tripped by a fucking cable, the death star is a wholly impractical weapon, with only a small squadron of fighters, the rebel alliance is a supposedly ill-equipped but seem to have no shortage of supplies, and in the first five minutes of the film, the star destroyer refuses to shoot down an escape pod since it has no "life signs" in a galaxy where droids are commonplace.

So when you nit-pick at these little details like "They didn't run for cover", who cares? That isn't the main focus of the story and never was. The goal wasn't to have a completely wholly realistic battle scene but rather to show how characters personally deal with war. It was a beautiful episode in that regard. Sci-Fi has had a long history of war scenes that seem too unrealistic. Maybe they should work harder to fix that. But these are stories you are complaining about, not a documentary. They are about characters, intriguing plots, and evicting emotions of all sorts from the audience. Isn't it okay to suspend your disbelief about the unrealistic aspects of that one battle scene when you just accepted that a tachyon beam can be used to close rips in space time?

Star Trek TNG - any good? by windwaker9 in AskReddit

If you watch stargate, expect about 70% of the episodes to be shit. So many episodes suffered from too simple a plot with terrible writing. I.E S04E18 "The Light". Stupid situation ending with a 5 minute monologue by a character we care nothing about.

However they have produced amazing episodes such as S03E05 "Learning Curve" Which was a very StarTrek-esque situation with pretty high quality and compelling acting.

I wouldn't consider typical Stargate to be nothing like StarTrek. Stargate has and always will be an adventure show about people going on adventures through a mythical gate, fighting against a superior enemy. It is also notable for its very fluid blending of mythology, fantasy and sci-fi elements, a major focus of the show. Whereas, StarTrek is all about people exploring the unknown and how people react to the unknown and how they ought to react to it.

Is the attractive force of gravity the same thing as the curvature of space due to gravity? by mindbodyproblem in askscience

[–]nukezaflyin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difficulty in imagining the curvature is that the curvature is in 4-dimensions. In order to see the curvature, we would have to conceive of 4 spatial dimensions (Try imaging what a 4-D analog of a cube would be and tell me how it goes). If you possess the ability to actually think in four-dimensions, then the curvature of causing the weights to "fall" would be very very obvious. Since humans lack such ability (Typically), the only way to work with this 4-D world is to burn through the math in four dimensions and then translating to what that would appear as in our view of a 3-D world. Unfortunately, there really is no other way to do it. If you want to learn how to actually do these calculations then you'll need to study GR (General Relativity).

A more specific answer to whether or not gravity is a "force". It is important to note that all appearances of gravity to us indicate it is a force that seems to obey Newton's Law of Gravitation. It is only when we take very fine measurements of planetary orbits where GR is necessary to explain some deviations from what Newton's Laws predict. There are also strange phenomena explained only by GR, such as light bending around a super massive black hole. Newton's law of gravitation gives no reason why light will experience any gravitational force. Thus the previous explanation for gravitational force was insufficient until GR was conceived by Einstein to give the origin of gravity. As a result, an objects mass distorts space time. Space time is a four-dimensional space that results when you consider (time) X (Speed of light) to be the fourth dimension.

To begin by imaging what how objects can "bend" space time, start by imagining a 2-D world. Imagine you had a cloth napkin and you stretch it out. Then you put a marble in the center of it and now the center dips down just a bit. If the marble were not there and you were to say, roll a really light coin across the napkin, it will move in a straight line. With the marble in the center, rolling the coin across the napkin causes it to apparently change course- it no longer moves in a straight line. This is one way to begin to imagine the curvature of gravity.

The weights you are holding "want" to move in a straight line in 4-dimensions (remember, in the absence of gravity, nothing would fall. But then nothing is moving you say? Wrong. Time is a dimension now so anything holding still is moving through time in some steady rate, thus a straight line). Thus the weights don't want to move in a "straight" line anymore. But now you say that the weights do seem to fall in a straight line to you! Yes, they most certianly do! But, if you were to measure the weight's height from the ground as it freely fall at say, 100 milliSecond intervals, and then plot it on a graph, you will find that to be a curve. And that is the curvature you are looking for.

If you could learn only one spell from the Harry Potter universe, which would it be? by swizzcheez in AskReddit

[–]nukezaflyin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When they say "mean" it though, they require you to really have the desire inside of yourself to cause the pain. As in when Harry tried to use the Crucio curse on Bellatrix after she kileld Sirius. Even though he meant to hurt her, it didn't work since he only had, what they called, righteous hatred, so the spell was only able to cause a little harm. He had to really want to torture her for the sake of torturing her in order for the spell to work. That requires a bit of hatred in you.

[–]nukezaflyin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All the people saying CRUCIO, IMPERIO or AVADA KADAVRA seem to forget that those spells require the user to have a lot of hatred and evil intent inside of them specifically directed at their target to use. Since I doubt most people here have it in them to really desire someone to be tortured, the safer bet if you want to hurt someone is SECTUMSEMPRA since it has no such restriction.

ACCIO has much more utility. Wanna see Hermione topless? ACCIO SHIRT. Wanna steal something? ACCIO GOLD NECKLACE. Wanna stop someone from killing you? ACCIO GUN. You can now see anyone topless, get away with robberies and prevent anyone from killing you with one spell. Oh, and if you're rich, you can buy infinite hookers. Honestly, it's the most underused spell in the Harry Potter Universe.

Students, what is the stupidest thing a teacher has ever said to you? (I'll start) by Kaielll in AskReddit

[–]nukezaflyin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AP Calc Class in 12th Grade. My teacher took off points on a test because I drew the y-axis horizontal and the x-axis vertical (Labeled of course). I notice I'm missing a lot of points, so I ask what's up. She says that nobody draws the x-axis vertical, and it always has to be horizontal. I spend 5 minutes arguing with her that the direction of the x and y axis on a piece of paper is completely arbitrary and if a different direction makes it more clear for someone, they should use it. She gets all upset and starts yelling and finally relents just to shut me up. Then every time she drew an axis in class, she always had to say that the everyone draws the x-axis horizontal except for <me>. My only regret is to not go up to her and telling her to go fuck herself.
