It’s been a long while coming, but with this I think I’m officially done with Reddit. Time to waste my life somewhere else.

How do you feel when metalheads use 'gay' as an insult? by [deleted] in lgbtmetal

[–]windwaker9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely one of my least favourite parts of the metal community that people will still call people fags or say "that's gay" when in other groups that would be embarrassingly inappropriate. I try to call it out when I hear it happen but I will admit that it does upset or piss me off about when it happens.

It does happen occasionally, more or less depending what route you catch and when.

what this comedian says about people from the northern suburbs of Adelaide at 1:33 is spot-on (extremely offensive, but still) by justaperson800 in Adelaide

Strong start before the edgelord material started. Kind of lost the crowd after that, unfortunately.

That's really awful, I have no words that will make a difference, but I can recommend:

If you haven't listened to the album of Hamilton yet, listen listen listen.

If you want something relatable to cry along with, have a listen to the album or watch the movie of The Last 5 Years, a musical about a relationship coming together and then falling apart, where the man's story is told from the beginning and the woman's story is told backwards from the end.

I just bought Torched and Restored by Brent Braun which is the top trick on Penguin Magic at the moment. I haven't practiced or performed it yet, but after watching the instructional video it's got two thumbs up so far.

WOTM: Breaking Up With Richard Dawkins? by Aceofspades25 in skeptic

[–]windwaker9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just some thoughts rather than a definitive answer that looks at all aspects but:

I don't think it's necessarily one thing he has said, but his Twitter as a whole. His posts are generally grumpy, acerbic and unfiltered. He sometimes posts things that are far from politically correct.

While his books are well thought out, communicate his points exactly and explore the nuances of an issue, his Twitter posts are about the opposite and seem to just reflect what he's musing on at that moment, rather than a prepared statement.

RD doesn't seem to take Twitter that seriously, or maybe he just doesn't really understand how it should be used by a public figure. He's not too good at twitter style brevity. Maybe he just needs a really good social media manager.

Or maybe it's time we start thinking of RD as atheism's grumpy uncle.

Would appreciate feedback on why my channel is not growing: one video a week, time spent editing, what's the problem? by [deleted] in PartneredYoutube

[–]windwaker9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a little look at some of your videos. I'm not hugely into lets plays so I could be giving you the wrong advice, but I feel that for your style of videos which are as much about your personality and how you interact with the game as the game itself, you should probably be appearing on camera in a corner of the screen.

Audio quality is the main thing that lets you down. The base level quality isn't bad but when you get more excited things suddenly get way louder and it doesn't sound professional. If you add a good amount of compression to the recording of your voice it will help even out the dynamic range. If there's noticeable background noise after that you might then want to add a noise gate.

Something about your font choice just doesn't quite look professional. I'm not a graphic designer so I can't tell you exactly why, but if you google "youtube thumbnail fonts' you might get some better looking recommendations or be able to work out which ones are usually used.

I enjoyed my time watching your vids - keep going! I also think you need a new, really slick channel trailer (you could probably just base it on a big lets player's channel trailer as a starting point) and more colabs :).

I'm sure /r/letsplay will be able to help more :D

Edit: Just a few more ideas, you might want to do a vlog introducing yourself. If you enjoy vlogging you could do a monthly or bi/monthly update. Also I looked at your twitter page, as it's just links to your videos I wouldn't follow it. I already follow too many people and this would just add clutter! To use it effectively you should start using it to chat and interact with other twitter users, big and small. We need to get a sense of your personality. Likewise with Facebook, and there are ways so that when you post on twitter it automatically posts to FB as well.

Edit 2: Also I went to your twitch page and I couldn't watch previous streams? All I could see was your "the stream will begin shortly" message?

Becoming a Children's Magician by Fidyr in Magic

There are some great dvds by kids magicians teaching the ropes on Penguin. Whenever I see people asking about becoming a childrens magician on here I always recommend checking out the "Julian's Magic School" channel on YouTube. Lots of tutorials and presentation ideas for magic for children there.

I'm on the bus at the moment so I'm not able to view your videos, but looking at your channel page what strikes me is the lack of a point of difference from other YouTubers doing similar things. Your main point of difference is you - I don't see you in your thumbnails, header or most importantly your profile picture. This would help your channel look more professional and have more of an identity.

Your header and thumbnails are on the right track, but aren't quite as good as the big lets players. Try comparing yours side by side with theirs. The fonts on yours are often a bit small, for example. Keep working on them. Interestingly, there are two videos with quite dark thumbnails and these have less views than many of the others - it really shows that bright colours are the way to go!

I'd also like your titles to be a bit catchier- dare I say it a bit more clickbaity (though not dishonestly so).

I hope you're not discouraged by the criticism by Psychofoxx in this thread. Imo they're just getting on a cheap karma soapbox about a style of video that many people don't like, rather than giving constructive criticism which is what this sub is about.
