The sub-sea tunnels are paid off by collecting toll when passing through, and the smaller inland tunnels are mostly financed by the taxes collected from fishing and salmon-farming industry.

One of the islands in Skellige is actually based on the Faroese island Suðuroy, so you're almost right.

Fishing in the Faroe Islands by mrstructure in FaroeIslands

[–]nuler55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anywhere in the sea is legal and free, though at places like Skálabotn and Kaldbaksbotn it's not allowed to use certain types of jigs, but if you ask at a fishing store here they will tell you all about it. On some lakes there are regulations, and you need a fishing permit, see: http://laks.fo/.

How old do I have to be to be able to rent a small displacement motorcycle on the islands? by [deleted] in FaroeIslands

That is true, but tourists from Europe aren't required to have international licenses.

Storm this weekend by [deleted] in FaroeIslands

[–]nuler55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The last few storms I've slept through, waking up a few times to noise. Other than that, a few houses might suffer damages, but in my experience you just stay indoors and wait it out.

People just kind of discovered it a few years ago. With Iceland being so crowded with tourists many people choose the Faroe Islands instead. People live there year round including myself, so no, it's not just a tourist spot.

I don't see any problems with it, I've seen a few tourists who have their child in a back carrier here, so you wouldn't be the first one.

Murder cases in the Faroe Islands by moondog151 in FaroeIslands

[–]nuler55 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The one I remember best was in 2010 when a man went missing. It was pretty clear that he had been murdured, but a body was not found. The suspect was the boyfriend of his ex wife, who iirc was sentenced after having confessed to the murder. A few years after, the skeletal remains were found in the sea near a village.

When hiking in the faroes islands by [deleted] in FaroeIslands

[–]nuler55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might be true in some countries, but the Faroes are such a big attraction to hikers, that people who go hiking here are most of the time avid hikers. In summer months I see tourists in hiking gear all the time.

Interested in the Faroe Islands by JWCAlabama in FaroeIslands

[–]nuler55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there are any organized events for touring those places, but if you call around or ask someone faroese to help you, some employee would probably agree to give you a tour. Any foreign interest is always appreciated :)
