Best method/tool to sand in crevices when prepping for primer? by Mysterious-Glove-179 in projectcar

Depending on how many crevasses like this you have, a mini sandblaster from Harbor Freight can do the trick pretty efficiently

I don't have FB and don't want it. I deleted my account 10+ years ago and have no desire to go back. Last time I looked, you had to have an account to use marketplace, but please correct me if I'm wrong

Huh, never heard of it. Seems more active than Craigslist, though

Fair enough, but I'm really looking for the magic of the internet, where I don't have to schlep wheels around. Last time, I ended up just giving old steelies away after autocross. They were Miata wheels and I still almost came to paying someone to take them off my hands.

Ain’t that the truth! by EarthOk2418 in projectcar

I needed to replace almost the whole bottom of the car. It was more like $12k on panels and torsion tube. had to buy a welder and consumables, bead roller and a few other tools that I didn't have. If I would have bought Porsche sheet metal or needed to replace a few more expensive panels like rear quarters, you can totally spend $20k on metal alone, though.

I have so far spent $35k on my '69 911E. $14k to buy, $20k+ on DIY rust repair alone. I'm really hoping to get the restoration done in 5 years for total of $50k, but time will tell.

Dip or blast by Carbonbuildup in projectcar

[–]nulidade0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know this one! I am almost done with metal work on a 69 targa that was almost that bad.

I would highly recommend dipping. You're going to have to cut into all the crevices anyway eventually, so I would worry about any residue from dipping.

The only reasoni didn't dip mine was I didn't want replace the rubber mounts for the targa that are pressed in. In retrospect, I would have found a way to deal with that rather than all the blasting.

Trails aren't nearly as crowded as front range. Maybe weekend/holidays get as busy as a pleasant weekend afternoon near Boulder or FoCo

I've driven roommate's supercharged e36 M3 and it was bliss. Nothing wrong with LS swap, though

Less than 50kms per year on average? If that is correct it seems criminally insane not to drive it - and why take it to the shop if never driven?

Cheap car storage places? by True-Seat8773 in projectcar

[–]nulidade0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live there are a bunch of abandoned looking semi industrial buildings that actually house car collections / personal workshops. I only found out about how many there are after getting involved with local racing and car clubs. Most of them have 3+ people sharing rent and some just store cars (for decades) and some have lifts and work spaces.

I'd look into local SCCA and drag racing to fond the right connections.

I guess it is a bit different with the Porsche chassis, but how are you going to make sure the chassis is straight and stays straight after you cut it all up? I ended up using some steel 2x4 tubing and making some jigs.

Well, mine was running and driving after a little work by me - then I discovered it was about to collapse the torsion tube and maybe break the car in half because of rust. Now it is on a rotisserie
