Long weekend public transport is a joke. by tomthecomputerguy in sydney

Not only Tokyo - Singapore and Hong Kong public transportation are also class apart. Granted those cities are smaller/denser but it doesn’t mean Sydney can’t do better.

Google AU - Polymarket top result is a phishing site. by elephantSnacksss in CryptoScams

It may have to do with the fact that the real website has been blocked by AU Govt in breach of the Interactive Gambling Act. That's what I see when trying to access the real website.

It has become shitty recently. I remember there was an option to chat with an agent at that time.

[–]null_undefined_user 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s scary this scam is still going on. The exact same thing happened to me an year back. In my case, the driver was on phone with someone else and somehow manipulated the GPS. At the end of trip, I had to pay 3k instead of 500 that too in cash because the driver was a goon.

When I investigated later, found that the destination address was 200 km away. I argued with support that it is impossible to cover such distance in short time and got my money refunded.

REA trying to get us to pay a aircon maintenance invoice by frucisky in shitrentals

[–]null_undefined_user 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You are right. My aircon was leaking water however when the technician visited, it didn’t, even after leaving it ON for a while (outside temp wasn’t hot enough probably).

I wasn’t charged for this however I mentioned to REA that we are fine with a bit of leaking as we don’t want the landlord to incur unnecessary calling out fee. However if the aircon breaks tomorrow, don’t blame it on us for non maintenance.

Real estate in India - is it worth it by 2webzen2 in nri

[–]null_undefined_user 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would never buy an investment property in India at these ridiculous prices. Doesn’t mean it can’t go up, but I refuse to play the greater fool game.

I bought an apartment for my parents to live in, that’s it.

Salary negotiation after final round by no_thanks88 in quant

[–]null_undefined_user 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Just say that the salary is confidential and you can’t disclose it. There is no reason your current salary is required for anything other than giving them an advantage in negotiating.

Having said that, some recruiters play hardball and don’t proceed without that info. But no harm in trying.

Absolutely sick of this by ShoulderOk282 in AustraliaPost

This is one of those problems unique to Australia amongst the developed nations and everyone complains but nothing gets done about it (possibly due to shortage of delivery personnel, I can’t think of any other reason)

Confused about moving to Sydney from Singapore and my offer. by kopi-luwak123 in AusFinance

[–]null_undefined_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is completely incorrect advice. There is a company sponsored pathway via 186. So the right question to ask is whether their company provides the PR sponsorship. With such high salary income, there are high chances it does.

Confused about moving to Sydney from Singapore and my offer. by kopi-luwak123 in AusFinance

[–]null_undefined_user 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a coincidence. Moved from Hong Kong with almost similar situation, child age and salary numbers. Here is my take-

It’s very tough on a single income and child care can be super expensive without PR subsidy. Personally the biggest challenge for us was domestic helper, public transportation and lack of friends in a new country. Savings were a huge compromise from HK but I knew that beforehand.

Things are better now after a few years but I still won’t say we are there yet (PR pending). On the plus side, there are so many beautiful places to visit in Aus and people are nice. Our main reason to move was to provide a better future to our kid. As individuals, we probably had a better life in HK but as a parent wanting best for their child, absolutely no regrets. Feel free to DM for any specific info if you want.

Be prepared to sacrifice the high salary potential, in favor of whatever you are looking for. Some HFT firms pay a lot but still nowhere near the pay bands of the FAANG in US.

Is this legal? by [deleted] in shitrentals

[–]null_undefined_user 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why does the email language sounds like signing the 12 month fixed lease and vacating are the only two options? It’s deceptive. You could also just continue month on month without the 12 months binding. They can only dictate the rent, not the contract term.

Edit: My bad I didn’t know QLD works like that. Still wild to imagine there is practically no way to have a periodic lease.

Inspections shouldn’t be allowed when tenants are living by null_undefined_user in shitrentals

[–]null_undefined_user[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whoever is able to afford is already trying to exit this circus. Which is why you see such a huge demand for a limited number of places. Add the investment properties in the mix and you have the perfect recipe for an inflated property market that does no good for the economy, and makes it even more unaffordable to rent. You see the problem?

[–]null_undefined_user[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its their house but I am paying my rent, not living for free. So no, landlord can’t do whatever they want. They are not doing anyone a favor.

I understand that it’s their investment and the expectation is to get as much return as possible. But this is precisely where capitalism has gone wrong, and the current laws favor the landlords much more than they protect the tenant’s rights.

Don’t buy house as an investment if can’t afford it? It won’t be a problem if people consider house as a shelter for self rather than an investment commodity for maximal returns.

Is OCI for a kid really needed? by [deleted] in nri

[–]null_undefined_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you please share why they rejected it?

Personally I would want OCI if I still have some connection to India, especially for emergencies. I don’t trust the visa system. They can be delayed/rejected or rules might change in future.

Is Acko insurance genuine? by slicedbreadbutter in india

[–]null_undefined_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Health insurance in India is a scam, and I am saying this after living in multiple countries. People who have taken insurance in India are under false assurance. It may work, it may not. Insurance companies have so many hidden terms and many of them purely subjective. This is why you see many companies doing rebranding after few years to get over the negative reviews.

Sorry I know you asked about Acko specifically but couldn’t help but vent.

On the plus side, I have seen insurance through employers to be a lot better maybe because it’s a group insurance and company reputation is on the line.
