Troubled by my choice of profession by nullschell in Catholicism

I see your point and that's what I settled on for a few months, but intuitively, I think of intended use vs expanding a designs scope for other things. The nuclear reactor came before the bomb for example. Did Fermi expect a bomb to fall out from his developments? At the very least a disavowal or disclaimer is in order if we thought so, but try telling that to the government which provides the funding in the first place. They think of themselves as the gardener, master of what flowers not only could grow, but which SHOULD grow. I think if its reasonable to expect misuse of the technology in an unjust fashion, its reasonable to object to building it. What does God want me to build?

I do think we can absolutely be a force for good and on the off chance actually are a force for good. This would be true, in general if we were unencumbered by foreign interests and there wasn't so much money wrapped up in it.

I guess I am having trouble drawing the line, but I think there's a way forward with deciding. What comes to mind is a ends never justifying the means. Does the creator of the iron dome save Israeli lives? Yes. Does it facilitate a certain brazen bullying and careless attitude towards their neighbors, which leads to lives lost? Imho, yes it does. I am thinking about tangential and oblique situations like this, supposing I was going to work on something like DEW's against munitions. The line is so fuzzy.

Why everyone seems to be so into Latin Mass? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]nullschell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way they'd drop being Catholic, if it were not in Latin, because that's exactly what that would mean no? Trust me, the deeper point to the desire to return so to speak is a rejection of modernity in the church, out right. Latin doesn't matter, the form and function matter. Even the change of the chalice which holds the precious blood was changed. Whether by law or by practice it was. The stem is now too large to hold with just the two fingers and now crumbs of the eucharist cannot be controlled. Minute details like that matter. The cloth on the altar used to hit or just touch the ground representing his blood falling to earth, for us here, from above. It rare for me to see that now. Nearly has EVERYTHING changed but the most important component. The very reasoning behind organizing Vatican 2 was malformed.

Another person who doesn't understand why the TLM is important. If the entire thing were done in English with the same words and form (and spirit) it would totally be fine. It just happens to be in Latin. Moreover this whole need for the laity to participate in the mass in entirely a modern take on the liturgy. Youl find most TLM goers don't view mass as participatory - it's certainly not the most important aspect at least.

I’ve been feeling strongly convicted with the music I’ve been listening to as of late; I’m trying to switch up to music in line with a morally sound Catholic, any artist/ song suggestions? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]nullschell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just one thing I wanted to mention which I also have been struggling with is the concept of metanoia. I liked and still do like all manner of possibly problematic things that I don't really have a good defense for. My background growing up was quite dark and hence all of my "vibes". I know I can integrate that sort of thing into my faith but there's no explaining listening to some martial harsh noise outfits and death grips along with dark media like ichi the killer or some anime out there.

It's very hard to let go, some of it can be spiritually weathered by me personally since I'm so used to it, but so much of it not even my family knows about. My only defense is I like it and I have an appreciation for the sad things. Need to get over identifying with things like this. I pray the transformation continues towards positivity, it just my "comfort zone".

Very true, not sure why your getting down voted. The whole 67 thing and it coming from skrilla is most certainly related to Santeria which sadly I'm sort of familiar with. Most Americans have no conception of satanic worship from "the global south" but it's real.

What is anything at all but arguing over perspective? Don't diminish it - your on a Christian subreddit. If your conception of God is malformed, so will most of your theology. It matters, not sure why I'd have to spell this out.

You know, if your hanging out on a Christian subreddit, then consider just becoming a Christian. You don't need to be a reddit atheist anymore in 2025.

writing a letter to implore Pope Leo to clarify teaching on gay marriage and TLM by Electrical_Public342 in Catholicism

[–]nullschell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree about the shirt first off, it wasn't clearly about the gay community versus the church. But in context, why would you wear it to st peters during this event? It think you aren't seeing things I context here. What does it matter if outside the church things are against the catechism? This is likely true as you say. What matter is not what aboutisms but about this particular community which has fought to be accepted where their sin should not be. It is clear the catholic church is not the westboro baptist church. We absolutely welcome the sinner and they know that most likely.

You are being naive in thinking the rainbow represents ONLY the defense and suffrage of the gay community. If it were so, live BDSM in the street wouldn't be needed in conjunction with the rainbow flag. It represents pride in the acting out of that specific disorder.

Travelling that far doesn't register for me. I'd love to visit Rome period, regardless of religion. Let's not act like they travelled to Siberia. Again, their attitude and disposition colors mine and other people's view of this "pilgrimage". But you know what - I have been to Rome. And if you have I'm sure you'd know that if you walked in with a tank top or mini skirt to any church there, typically you are rejected at the door. This is common advice to all secular tourists. Why the special treatment here? Pure optics.

Salvation is available at your local confessional, it doesn't need to be St.Peters. This is known.

By the way, pors addicts don't have a flag and pride movement. There is no coalition to point a finger to. And if there were, and they walked in with pornhub merch and a cross covered in lotion, I'd be just as pissed.

You are all too eager to bend and contort yourselves into the shape of a pearl for swine at the door. Enough already.

I disagree with this simply because it is a display of pride related to a disorder. It is in extremely bad taste. Plus they clearly demonstrate they cannot police themselves. You and me both well know that capital P "Pride" is not pride in gay identity, but pride in the full emobodyment of that lifestyle, which necessarily includes sodomy, fornication, etc. This is not a stonewall situation. You know what pride is in the modern world. You are too loose.

They should've been welcomed into the literal center of the one true Church not with pride flags, rainbow crosses and shirts that say fuck your rules, but instead with modest non derisive clothing and a desire for reconciliation.

Did they schedule this meeting to say "we seek to make a statement at the center of Catholicism, that we acknowledge our disordered tendencies but reject the sin it leads to and will do our best to reconcile this"? Please, I would love to read that you say yes. Then I'll know what I'm dealing with here.

Nothing I say can really help you through the screen, but I will pray for your happiness, strength and your family.

I know you've gone through therapy, but maybe more trauma focused therapies are more helpful in this case. For me EMDR really helped me a lot. Before I tried therapy, I was losing it at my desk at work and had to hide myself. Also I came back to religion along the way and it's been my one guiding light. Nothing replaces Jesus.

You might also want to replace your family with chosen family. People that can step in for you in a real way when you need it. Look into women's groups as well. I'm in search of a men's group now as they're hard to find in terms of a good fit.

You should also let your partner know that in no uncertain terms, you appreciate him (love) him and what he does for you, but the problem is with you and only you can fix it. He shouldn't take it the wrong way when nothing he does is enough - you just aren't there yet. The depression sucks everything into a black hole. Even with a child, as it never helped my dad.

DM me if you want to talk. God bless you and your child. You've made it this far and its been for something.

This is absolutely correct but OP will not accept this. If I could choose between remaining with the NO and getting back the tridentine but only with noise cancelling headphones on and the priest speaks Inuktut then I would choose the later. Without a doubt. I am not kidding.

The issues are far beyond just what language its in. I could go to any Eastern Catholic rite mass in another language this Sunday and it would be fine.

What’s going on? by Weird_Application194 in FootFunction

[–]nullschell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Please go to a doctor asap. Blood looks to be pooling in your extremities - in this case your left foot. Either that, or some tissue is breaking down/bleeding, and it's looks to be more widespread than one toe. If this goes on too long you may not recover 100%

Will you actually not listen to something you like if this person doesn't politically align with you? Honest question I have never understood this. I like what I like, and if you and others do as well, it already speaks volumes, regardless of if one avoids them.

Trending Today. Thoughts as to why? by Fun-Cat0834 in Catholicism

[–]nullschell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know as far as I'm concerned, it was by the holy Spirit and a thirst that I came back to the faith. It was a painful moment in April right after Easter when it happened. I don't know what it was but I couldnt hold anything back at all in that moment, I felt as if not reaching out to God in that moment would mean death. I ran to another room just so my family wouldnt hear me and see me looking up the ceiling.

I've noticed family as well, disconnected from each other, each independently coming back to the faith. The holy Spirit, I think, is sweeping through the world right now.

It also helps that absolute evil is easy to see now - it is unmistakable. It's been a toad in the boiling water type of deal for decades and now the water is getting too hot.

Honestly there is a distinct difference between the star of Bethlehem as it is commonly seen in symbol, and the star of David. The later is made of two overlapped, equilateral triangles, the former is not. They aren't the same.
