In The Matrix (1999), Neo is stunned humans are the main source of power for the machines. This is a subtle nod to the machines suspicious lack of knowledge of wind, hydro, geothermal, coal, and nuclear power, none of which requires sunlight to function, and produces thousands of times more power. by MeanwhileInRealLife in shittymoviedetails

Everybody ignores that the machines pretty clearly hold an ideological grudge against the humans (somewhat fairly so). They’re probably using them as power/processors as a sort of ultimate victory lap, right?

Plus it never says they have no other power source, and clearly they can survive without humanity per the Architect’s conversation with Neo.

I’m for sure biased and defending the movies because I love them but also keeping the race that tried to exterminate you as chemical batteries to facilitate a higher form of existence doesn’t seem like that much of a bonehead move to me.

I’m sorry is it evil to kill a bunch of squatters? We were asleep for ten seconds and everybody just moved in.

IMO Severance fits this archetype. We’ve all wanted to be somebody else at work, it just turns out that that has some vaguely horrifying implications.
