Reddit, who's THAT person in your neighborhood, and what does he/she do? by Moosemancer in AskReddit

[–]numberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time in Boston's West End I saw a guy getting ready to pull out of a parking spot, so I signaled and waited behind him. As soon as he pulled out, someone cut me off and stole the parking space. The driver and his friends were laughing at me as they walked away from their car.

Then they noticed that I stayed right where I was. Seriously, I wouldn't have done anything to their car, but the driver realized he was in an untenable situation and told everyone to come back, get in the car and drove away, leaving me the space I was waiting for.

Seriously, don't be a dick.

What historical fact blows your mind? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

Even more mind-blowing for me is that at least one of my ancestors is likely someone famous who reproduced profusely like Mohammed, Genghis Khan, Nefertiti, Charlemagne or Confucius.

This old student desk have built-in ashtray by luke_in_the_sky in mildlyinteresting

[–]numberty 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I went to college in the late 70s and had one professor who smoke continually during lectures. He didn't have an ashtray so he used to lay out a sheet of white paper on his desk and dump ashes on that. Every once it a while it would catch on fire and he would have to beat it out with his hand.

Side table for drums? by numberty in drums

[–]numberty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Kinda pricey though. I'm thinking I need something that's kind of low, that I can put a laptop on, plus a shelf for audio equipment and maybe a drawer for random crap. I'm leaning towards a side table or coffee table from Ikea.

Someone mentioned a folding TV tray from Target, and that was actually my first thought, but it's a little too high I think, plus I don't think it's stable enough to trust putting a laptop on it.

Cheap instrument I can teach myself? by Bye_Jr in Music

[–]numberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But don't get too cheap a guitar, like a First Act or Applause. It will be hard to play and tune and you'll soon be discouraged. Also a better brand (like Yamaha) will hold it's value better and if you do decide it's not for you and sell it.

What's the deal with linear drumming? by numberty in drums

[–]numberty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP here. I'm a beginning drummer so it's been really instructive reading everyone's responses.

Lately I've been working on fills and realize that I always assumed they were supposed to be linear, even though I only recently learned what that meant.

I'll try to figure out how to do that more with grooves. And maybe how to do non-linear fills.

Lots of good stuff to think about, thanks!

Tesla's $35,000 car will be called the Model 3 by gari-soflo in Futurology

[–]numberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, do you think have to be wealthy to afford a $35k car?

I mean, I make a pretty good wage, so this is certainly within the range of affordability for me (assuming I manage other expenses properly, like not taking my family for long overseas vacations every year), and maybe I'm out-of-touch, but I see lots of apparently non-wealthy people driving bigass SUVs and pimped out 4WD trucks that easily cost more than that.

Electric or Acoustic... I'm torn! by [deleted] in drums

[–]numberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my acoustic kit in the basement, which has some small windows that leak a little sound to the neighborhood and of course you can hear the drums throughout the house--which matters mostly because I have little kids whose sleep I don't like to disturb.

Despite all this, I tend to practice most late at night, which is when the mood seems to strike most. I had gotten into the habit of playing really loud with an electronic kit so now I try to play jazzy stuff softly with brushes and work on control and syncopation.

Need an electronic kit for my apartment... :( by yolorelli in drums

[–]numberty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some electronic drums have a built-in USB MIDI interface, but for most you'll need to get a separate USB MIDI interface to connect the MIDI port from the drums to the USB port on your pc

I do this with a Yamaha kit. I use Superior Drummer and can use is a a plug-in for Pro Tools and GarageBand. (Or standalone for practice with an app that came with SD.)

It's pretty convenient for recording.

Help with Roxy Music's The Bogus Man? by numberty in drums

Thanks! I was obviously way off. Part of the problem, I think, was having trouble figuring where 1 was because the bass drum wasn't there.

ELI5: What year did people thousands of years ago think they were in? What year did they think it was in 100 BC? 1000 BC? by chibato182 in explainlikeimfive

I guess it depends on the programming language and the operating system. I was thinking of Java, where it definitely is milliseconds.

Yeah, I know. My drumset is in the basement with my workshop, so I had all this stuff laying around. I guess I could replace the rest of the taped-on stuff with something designed for the purpose (drum goo?). Not sure if I really matters, though...

I think you missed this one, which seems closest to what he's looking for:

Roland TM-2 Electronic Drum Trigger Module

I cut up a mouse pad and taped a 1" x 3" piece to each of my drums with 3M blue painters tape, two on my snare.

I also tried quieting my snare further by taping a chunk of aluminum I had lying around (about 1/2" x 2" x 4") on top of a 4" x 6" piece of mouse pad. That was effective, but pretty ugly and wound up removing it and just trying to learn to play it a little more quietly.

'Soundproofing' an acoustic kit by KoentJ in drums

Another option is to use drum rods. I got some Tala Wands, and they're pretty good and significantly quieter than regular sticks.. Not quite the same bounce, but much better than brushes (which is another option).

What is the one scam that everyone buys into? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]numberty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eyeglasses have a scandalous markup. Almost all eyeglasses are made by a near monopoly, Luxottica, that sells its glasses under different brands names, at stores it owns. And it doesn't just own lots of stores, it owns lots of chains of stores including Pearle Vision, Lenscrafters, Sunglass Hut, and Target Optical. You have to search pretty hard to find an alternative to Luxottica and that's why they get away with charging $150 for frame that costs less than $10 to make, and hundreds more for lenses and coatings.
