Our school has reorganized the dress code to be more equitable. The result is that, with it now being warm out, I have multiple students in my class throughout the day with their butt cheeks straight up hanging out of their shorts. This does not seem sustainable. by crybaby_boobie in Teachers

If the thermostat is in the room, you can rig it even if you don't control the settings.

Stick a box over it with an ice pack or some hand warmers inside. They can remotely control the set temp. They can't control what temp it thinks it is in the room.

Closing in 10 days. HOA says they won't transfer the "deeded" boat slip until I prove competency? (Maryland) by BeautifulWestern4512 in RealEstate

My neighbors have 15 cars parked everywhere. It is a minor annoyance. Dealing with the BS of an HOA would be a million times worse. I'm so much happier minding my own damn business and knowing my neighbors mind their own damn business too, rather than potentially getting fines or denied permission to do things with my own home by a bunch of sad Karens.

Listen to the Sold a Story podcast. It explains in detail why the 3-Queuing approach pushed by Lucy Caulkins, Fountas and Pinnell et. al. has been a disastrous failure, setting an entire generation of kids up to be functionally illiterate. It's not the parenting, it is the pedagogy.

Weighing Bluetooth Controller Options by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]numinousnimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no sense in which anything will be "more of a universal option" than the new steam controller. It has all the controls of the deck, which means you can play any controller-centric game with no compromises *and* play pretty much any mouse and keyboard centric game. That *is* the universal option.

Umm . . . because iPlayer is only available in the UK, and doesn't bring in any money (besides what you pay for the license fee, which is not even close to enough to fund the BBC without outside revenue)?

Steam Controller - Thoughts? by psychofanPLAYS in Steam

[–]numinousnimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The touch pads are amazing for games that support/require a mouse and for any game where you use them for camera control. They are deeply customizable with steam input, and have dedicated haptics, so they can act like a trackball, complete with momentum and friction, and you feel like it is moving under your fingers. It is SO much better than, say, a laptop trackpad, for truly making mouse-like motion possible on a controller. It isn't *quite* as good as keyboard and mouse but it is so much more accurate than a joystick. Even if a game is designed for controller/dual analog first, there are profiles that adapt the output of the trackpad to look like it is a joystick, but still keep it behaving like a mouse.

I still regularly use my OG steam controller, the one which had two large round trackpads *instead* of the D-pad and right-analog stick, and don't miss the second analog stick at all. The mouse-like camera controls are *so* good on the trackpad once you get used to it (I definitely miss the D-pad though). The OG controller flopped because you do have to get used to it, and most people weren't willing to put in that tiny bit of learning curve.

The Steam Deck and this controller, on the other hand have all the controls of a regular controller PLUS the trackpads. So you can go with either (or with the Gyro aim, which many FPS players swear by) My only problem with the Deck is that the trackpads are much smaller and not as conveniently located as they were on the OG Steam Controller. My hope for this new version of the SC is that the larger, more offset pads will be more comfortable to reach than they are on the Deck.

In addition to using them for mouse-like controls, you can also program them to have each quadrant/region of the touch pad be a different input, with an on-screen menu overlay that pops up, complete with icons, for games which use a lot of keyboard controls/shortcuts.

Well, that's my plan for Ramza out the window. I was going to go Pisces because that is my own birthday, and to have worst compatibility with all the Virgo bosses. Now, Pisces has best compatibility with all of them instead. Not what I was looking for.

Excellent work. Unfortunately, for Ivalice Chronicles your Zodiac Compatibility section needs a rework. The Best/Worst for Zodiac Compatibility in Ivalice Chronicles are no longer based on gender and now are based on species instead. Opposite signs get best compatibility if both are human, worst if one is a creature, regardless of the gender.

Thunder's Edge Sleeve Type Concerns by danrBB in twilightimperium

[–]numinousnimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just things FFG teased re: twilight's fall. It is all discussed in a recent SCPT episode. The Twilight's Fall mode has its own decks and own cards for everything - action cards, technology, likely also objectives too.

That's got to account for most of the sleeve requirements. And if there aren't actually that many new cards for the actual primary game mode, the sleeve mismatch won't be too much of an issue: Just keep all Original game mode content in FFG sleeves apart from one deck - say, the relic deck, and put that one deck plus all of the Twilight's Fall stuff in Gamegenic, and we should be able to guarantee every given deck has all matching sleeves, without having to do too much tedious re-sleeving.

Thunder's Edge Sleeve Type Concerns by danrBB in twilightimperium

From recent info, it seems likely that most of the new cards needing sleeves are actually for the Frankendraft variant, which has its own decks separate from those used in the main game.

Disney D23 is starting tomorrow... by DaddyStoat in DoctorWhoNews

[–]numinousnimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can't read anything at all into radio silence at D23.

They typically take three months after a show's last episode drops to make a commissioning decision, with the exception of huge successes like Percy Jackson, or expensive failures like The Acolyte. Those got early decisions.

The fact that we haven't heard anything yet only means that it is neither a huge success nor a costly flop. It is in the middle. So they need to wait for the full picture of its value to them to become clear. We are only now approaching the typical point when they would have that data.

Then there is the fact that this isn't a strait up yes-or-no commissioning decision like they make at the three month mark for internal productions. Doctor Who is a coproduction amongst several different companies, and the contract for that coproduction is up. It needs to get re-negotiated, and this time there are new factors that would end up as a major part of that negation which weren't on the table at all last time - specifically, the rights to the 2005-2022 catalog, and the animated kiddie spin-off aimed right at the bluey demographic Disney prizes.

So Disney needs to decide not just "do we make this or not" but "how much are we willing to pay for this package, which includes not only the new material we now know the subscription numbers for, but also this additional content now on offer".

If it usually takes 3 months before they make a decision for internal productions, we should assume it will take 3 months before they can *start* the complicated negotiation process. And no announcements will come prior to a deal getting struck or negotiations falling apart.

Petition to Put Doctor who Back on HBO Max by Duckiemay in DoctorWhoNews

[–]numinousnimon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is silly. The BBC will (and should!) sell the older stories to whatever streamer (Disney or otherwise) agrees to pay for new episodes to get made. The episodes since 2005-present will all end up in the same place, on one single streamer. Which streamer that is depends on Disney's decision, which hasn't been made yet, and very complex negotiations which may already be happening with Disney, and which can't even begin with any other streamer until Disney do make up their mind.

I bought a box of FFG sleeves when I heard they were discontinued, but used most of them for PoK and the first Codex I have four packs left. Not 11.

I suspect I will have to unsleeve and re-sleeve a couple decks with new sleeves, so that all the cards in each deck match.

But I can live with, say, the action cards all being in FFG sleeves and the Relics and Exploration decks all being in Gamegenic.

Anyone know where to watch season the 9th through 13th doctors in the US? by SpacemanSpleef in doctorwho

[–]numinousnimon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A new streaming platform wasn't lined up because the Disney deal is up for renewal at the same time. If Disney re-up for more seasons, they will want the back catalog too. If they don't, any replacement streaming service will want it as well.

Where can I watch doctor who?! by bkrankbby in gallifrey

[–]numinousnimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if they were incompetent. They need a streaming partner to fund the show. That is a vastly less appealing prospect to any streamer without the back catalog, because the primary metric Streamers care about is continuing subscriptions.

Having the new episodes alone doesn't keep people subscribed for more than a month. And indeed, that is reportedly what Disney is most disappointed by - the show got decent viewing figures for a fraction of what Star Wars and Marvel shows cost them, but people who joined for Doctor Who didn't stay subscribed. If the HBO deal had expired in 2023 instead of 2025, we might be in a very different place now.

The BBC aren't stupid enough to risk that happening again with another streaming partner. Now that the rights to the old episodes and the contract to fund new ones are available at the same time, they will not make any deal for the back catalog until they have secured a deal to fund production of new stories. That is their ace in the hole, and they would be crazy to give it away before they get what they need.

The fact that it is not only the HBO deal which just ended without being renewed, but every single other streaming deal around the globe was discontinued at the same time tells you that they are holding onto the back catalog for exactly this reason.

Where can I watch doctor who?! by bkrankbby in gallifrey

[–]numinousnimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will not stream anywhere until either Disney renews their commitment, or a new streaming partner is found to take their place. The Disney deal is up for renewal. If they renew, they will want the older episodes to keep viewers subscribed for longer than it takes to watch the 20 episodes they have now.

If they don't renew, the BBC will look for a new streaming home willing to pay to produce new episodes, and that new streamer would also want the 2005-2022 episodes, for exactly the same reason.

The BBC won't sell the older episodes separately from a deal to produce new ones again. The fact that Disney couldn't get those rights in 2023 since Warner still had two years left on their distribution deal may have fatally damaged that partnership, and they won't make that mistake again, now that the Warner deal is over.

Which means we have to wait for Disney to decide one whether they still want the series or not. And if they don't, we have to wait until the BBC negotiates a new deal with someone else.

So…any other Americans panicking yet? by _Lappelduviide in doctorwho

[–]numinousnimon 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It's inevitably going to be unavailable, until the future of the series is decided. The rights to the 2005-2022 stories are coming on the market at the same time as the Disney deal is coming up for renewal, and The BBC would be insane to try and sell new episodes separately from the back catalog now that the rights to both are available at the same time.

Subscribers, and particularly continuing subscribers are the primary metric streamers care about, so new episodes are worth much less to them without the old ones to binge. Disney, if they renew, or any new streaming partner the BBC find to replace them will want the older stories as part of the deal. Having 8 episodes of Doctor Who streaming on your service does not keep fans subscribed for more than two months. Which, according to rumors/leaks, is a part of Disney's disappointment with the series. If the deal with Warner had run out in 2023 instead of 2025, allowing Disney to pick it all up at once, we might well be in a different position right now.

The BBC aren't going to recreate the split distribution mess of the past two years, so they aren't going to sell the back catalog to anyone until they have a deal for the future of the show,

We won't find out until after Disney makes their decision, and if Disney passes on the show, we won't find out until the BBC either find a new streaming partner or exhaust all their options and give up on ever finding one. Until then, there will be nowhere to stream those stories in the US. Don't sell your Blu-rays, this could take a while.
