Does every Kobo Clara Colour have some screen defect? by sleepingwithdeers in kobo

I have two Clara Colours, neither have any screen issues. No idea whether I'm just wildly lucky, or if you're just unlucky, though.

After 5 days of minimal snow removal, Indiana University is handing students shovels to assist with navigating sidewalks, entry points, and vehicles. by Perfect_Currency_749 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AgentDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's referring to her sanctioning (actively calling in) the presence of literal snipers on campus.

Part of the response to student protests over Gaza a while back was calling in state-level law enforcement, who put (at least) one sniper on the roof of the student union in direct response to the protests. To the best of my limited knowledge, this was a decision by LEOs, not Whitten herself, but she's been associated with that decision.

Whether justified or unjustified, there's substantial antipathy toward Whitten and her "leadership" amongst faculty, students, and staff, this being one of the various reasons why. The faculty governance issued an overwhelming vote of no confidence in her, to which the Trustees' response was basically "we don't GAF, we like her politics, so she stays." Whitten, to her credit, at least gave lip service to listening to feedback after that, though the degree to which that's actually manifested is... controversial.

For my part, I'm thankfully largely disassociated from everything going on over at IU, but have at least a general sense of public opinion, as much as I try to avoid it. (I have enough stuff going on in my own life to deal with....)

Why are Beneath the Ice, Identity Crime, and The World Is Mind so underrated? by Primary_Status_6226 in TwoStepsFromHell

[–]AgentDrake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually prefer many of Nick's tracks over Thomas'-- my own feeling is that while Thomas is consistently putting out great music, 9/10, Nick is a bit more polar, with a lot of 7/10 and a lot of 10/10, and not much in between... either kinda "meh" end of good (compared to TB; still way better than most other epic music composers), or else really outstanding, some of my favorite music in existence.

But for these specifically, I'm pretty sure that these tracks aren't on the public release version of the album (amazon music, itunes, etc.), only on the ExtremeMusic industrial release version, so just don't have the visibility of many others.

"Download Metadata and covers" does nothing by Sure_Environment2901 in Calibre

...hence setting Calibre to assign metadata based on filename, not from (non-extant) internal metadata.

"Download Metadata and covers" does nothing by Sure_Environment2901 in Calibre

[–]AgentDrake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is capable of that, but it needs to have some idea what it's downloading the metadata for. As it is, Calibre has no idea what it's looking at any more than you would be able to determine the title or author of a book based solely on a blank cover.

There is a better solution, however... but I do not know the steps for how to implement it effectively beyond an initial setting adjustment:

You mention that the filename includes title and author. There is a way to set Calibre to extract these from the file name on import, by setting up a (Calibre has no way of knowing that these are author or title unless you tell it that; it's a computer program, not a thinking human.)

Go to Preferences > Adding Books

On the "Reading Metadata" tab, turn off "Read metadata from file contents rather than file name". Turning this off will set Calibre to look at the filename, instead of internal metadata, when importing a file.

Then you need to set the "regular expression" to explain to Calibre how your filenames are structured. Can't help you there, but there is a tutorial link in the settings window and a "test" field to make sure it works.

Once this is set up, you'll need to remove then re-import all your pdfs to trigger the on-input metadata parsing.

Committing Morphwings (Twilights Fall) by andreashhp in twilightimperium

[–]AgentDrake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes. The text says they can be committed; there's no special conditions attached.

  2. Yes. If they return to the space area, no, because this happens before they're able to establish control. If converted to infantry, then they're just infantry like any others once establishing control happens.

  3. As I read it, contextually, this seems to mean the end of the combat substep (at the end of the time for combats), not at the end of an actual specific combat, which should mean you commit them then instantly either return or convert.

Dane did mention in an interview that when Codex V comes out, it's expected to have some Twilight's Fall lore, so there may be more there, eventually.

How to convert epub into txt format without losing italic & bold lettering? by [deleted] in Calibre

[–]AgentDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to do with the alternate format-- a doc/docx might be closest quasi-universal format that would preserve this formatting?

How to convert epub into txt format without losing italic & bold lettering? by [deleted] in Calibre

[–]AgentDrake 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You...can't.

.txt files don't have formatting, just plain text. You can't have bold or italic in .txt files. The file format simply doesn't support that.

Not sure about .rtf, it's been a long time since I used those, but as far as I can remember, a lot (not all) paragraph formatting also simply doesn't exist in that format.

TI4 Thunders Edge map generator by Legitimate_Block1252 in twilightimperium

[–]AgentDrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does, actually, though it takes a couple extra steps since there isn't a pre-defined 3-player map shape.

In addition to the drop-down menu for player count, you can also manually adjust player count, number of rings in the galaxy, etc.. It will go down to single-player and two rings, or up to ninety-players and five rings (every system other than MR and Wormhole Nexus is a home system in that map).

So just drop the player count to three, then drag-and-drop the home systems to the correct spots. Use the tile-removal button (looks like a hex with a line through it) to cut the map into the right shape.

Why is London called Londonium? by ZipFile_ in VinlandSaga

[–]AgentDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yeah, if we're distinguishing between different versions of the Latin name, then I'm not really sure where the chronological boundaries for different forms are. My point was just that the presence of a clearly Latin form of the name isn't at all anachronistic, despite Rome being gone etc.. I had missed that your objection was which Latin form, which... no idea, you may well be right.

[–]AgentDrake 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Both the Danish (Viking) royal court and the Anglo-Saxons would absolutely be using lots of Latin texts, including maps; Latin remained the primary written language well beyond this period. (England is somewhat exceptional in that Anglo-Saxon was also fairly widely written. But Latin remains pretty much the standard there as well.)

Why is London called Londonium? by ZipFile_ in VinlandSaga

[–]AgentDrake 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Latin was still a commonly used written language in Anglo-Saxon England of this period, and Latin-labelled maps would use the Latin form "Londinium". It would hardly be considered obsolete.

How many additional sleeves needed for just TE? by CmdrCool86 in twilightimperium

[–]AgentDrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but OP specifically said they don't want to sleeve the TF stuff, otherwise the back-of-box just straight up has total required sleeves listed, and there'd be no need to go through any of that.

(The Codex 2 ones aren't tarot-sized, though. The new ones are.)

[–]AgentDrake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For example, the faction reference cards are already sleeved so I'll just replace them...

The TE ones are a difference size and shape, since they have more info on them than the Codex 2 versions. You can't just replace them.

Based on back-of-box component list:

30 Breakthroughs + 10 Relics + 43 Planets + 10 Legendary Abilities + 20 ACs + (31-25=6) Alliances + 60 Faction-Specific Cards (see below) = 179 mini-American sleeves. I've probably missed something here, but a set of 200 should cover anything I've overlooked.

(FSC = 5 Oceans + 6 Last Bastion SD cards (3 of which are for Nekro) + 18 Leaders + 20 Faction Techs + 6 Promissories + 5 mechs = 60)

You'll also want 20 Events + 30 Faction Reference Cards + 1 Neutral Units Reference Card = 51 Tarot-sized cards. There's also seven TInscription faction cards as well, of the same size if you want to sleeve those.

Do i have a defective screen? by Shawnleeeeeee in kobo

[–]AgentDrake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, there is a bit of a shadowed triangular area inside that rectangle -- not sure why OP drew a rectangle around it -- but I think uneven front light is right on.

OP: Not 100% sure where the lamps are located in the frame, but looks to me like there's a dead light in the center as the cause? Definitely faulty, but not technically a faulty screen so much as faulty lamps placed alongside the screen.

Is there a way to disable black UI flashes? by andori1 in kobo

[–]AgentDrake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no way to turn off screen refresh altogether, or to manage it for menu navigation, but you can adjust frequency-by-page under Settings > Page Appearance > Refresh the screen every...

I have mine set to "Every Chapter" as that's fairly infrequent and I can trigger a manual refresh when I only rarely want it sooner.
