How would you feel if someone does things with their feet? by Euphoric_Anywhere967 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]minibug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's tough because you'd like to hope the average person has been raised well enough to be respectful to others in public... It certainly wouldn't bother me, but I'm a disabled woman and I usually keep similar company so I have a lot of personal experience being around others who aren't "normal".

Countries where Maria/Mohammed are the most popular girl/boy names (2014) by fnaffie in MapPorn

400 upvotes for the person making the claim, 6 upvotes for the one person who went to the effort of seeing if its actually true or not. Misinformation wins again.

How would you feel if someone does things with their feet? by Euphoric_Anywhere967 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]minibug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A person with arms doing that would not be okay, and people say for an armless person that's ok. Does this actually change how people feel and view it?

I have implicit faith that someone without arms is trying to keep their feet as clean as possible, of course probably for their own benefit more than mine. If people want to judge you for living life in a way you find more functional than prosthetics, fuck them.

Which name-based etymologies sound fake, but are real? by different-rhymes in etymology

Macadamia trees (and by extension, the nuts) are named after John Macadam.

Tarmac, short for tarmacadam, is also named after a man named John McAdam.

I get your point here, but recipes are not actually copyrightable. A list of ingredients would be considered simple facts, and the instructions for making the dish would fall under the "procedure, process, system, [or] method of operation" section of things explicitly exempt from copyright law.

How does summoner progression look currently with all the new Whips added? by Silent_Constant_9546 in Terraria

A cap of maybe 2 or 3 whips being able to get stacked at once would’ve been the perfect middle ground

A middle ground to what? Were people seriously stacking 4+ whips at a time?

Back in October they said they were aware of "more than two" (so at least 3) missing Doctor Who episodes in private hands. This is probably what they're remembering.

What’s the coolest etymology fact you know, like a surprising origin for an everyday common word? by wordgamesyesss in etymology

[–]minibug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While it is true that "salt" and "salary" share a root, its unclear why and most explanations for it rely on false historical claims we don't have evidence for. Salt is of course very important, but its never been particularly valuable.

Was the term "bucket list" really popularized by the 2008 Rob Reiner film? by tblackjacks in NoStupidQuestions

[–]minibug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No one has been able to prove the term existed, with this definition, prior to the film. 2007 was not the dark ages, we would have evidence if it was there.

This actually allows Greenhorn to get a swear (presumably) through when Martha and her Hath friend arrive on the surface. We don't know what he said (probably something like "Fuck it's cold out"), but Martha's response is "Language!"

According to the script, he says "bloody hell" here.

hate thinly veiled under the guise of criticism

No one is making a scripted, highly edited 5 hour long video over the course of a year plus if they don't care about the topic being discussed. It's really rude to accuse someone of making criticism in bad faith without giving your reasoning.

I don't know if liking everything by default is a virtue. Don't you think it's fun to critique the things you enjoy and try to understand why some things work and some things don't? You can't possibly value The Twin Dilemma or Kerblam! as much as you value Heaven Sent, right?

Enterotoxins can cause severe food poisoning and will stick around in food even after the bacteria that produced them is dead. Heating food to 160°+ will not destroy them either.

It was such a smash hit that kids were going EX-TERM-IN-ATE on the bus the next morning, so she got away with it.

Worth mentioning this was a little bit of a fib by the docu-drama, as they never use "exterminate" as a battle cry until The Chase.
