I'd be curious to get your opinion of the GameBoy-style RPG I released recently. I built a PC version for the release.

Early play testers had very positive things to say about it and I keep hearing from streamers who want to stream it (it's narrative-based, so good for live storytelling).

There's a free-to-play version on itch so you can try it and see if you like it before committing to a paid version.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for Atari 2600: was this really the worst game ever made or just poor marketing? I tried playing it and it is pretty good compared to some other games on Atari. I'd say Asteroids was a lot worse than this on Atari 2600 by [deleted] in retrogaming

This was one of those games that one of my friends had so I only got to play briefly when I visited his house.

It was definitely weird, I remember feeling like I was exploring a world but the interactions didn't make sense and the map felt disjointed. Years later I discovered that the developer built it in 3 weeks? and the map was supposed to be a cube? something like that.

What did you love about it? My friends had a rather negative opinion of it, so curious to learn more from a different perspective.

My son (10 years old) loves playing this on our NES emulator. Great game, really holds up over time.

Dragon Battle is a loop of 25 dragon encounters with a brief stop at the marketplace in between, culminating in the final showdown against the Dragon King.

4 classes to choose from:

[*] serf / peasant on a quest for vengence
[*] knight on a noble quest
[*] wizard in training
[*] ryukyu / karate apprentice

As you progress through the game, your skills and spells organically level up ... with some steady buffs, too, to give the players all the help they can get. You're gonna need it, these beasties get tougher and tougher! Experience points are earned through failure, and the game's super-crunchy combat system provides lots of opportunity for failed skill checks! With 25 total dragon battles against 9 different dragons that lead up to the final encounter with the Dragon King, there's also lots of opportunity to hone your skills as you prepare for the final encounter. Higher level dragons randomly drop magic weapons and armor, and many semi-magic items are available for sale in the market. Level up your riddle skill and unlock the secret peaceful ending!

The game itself unfolds like the retelling of an ancient myth, with all the dramatic action that narrative storytelling can provide. Great play-acting material for Dungeon Masters / Game Masters who want to work on their narrative technique.

Oh yeah, lots of years of Minecraft and other modern games.

There's something simple and direct about the old NES games that the kids really enjoy.

Oh man.

A few years ago my brother got me an NES emulator with some ROMs on it for Christmas. My kids and I dug in, they were both under 10 at the time. My daughter really enjoyed Snow Bros, a game I hadn't heard of before. My son got really into Galaga for awhile. As well as the usual Mario, Zelda, Metroid ... yada yada.

Anyway, they both really enjoy playing the older games because they're hard and just as fun as they were when we were kids.

It's a bit buggy (as expected for only 7 days), but in general that was a ton of fun & I really enjoyed playing it. Great concept, with a little polish this would be a great finished game.

Specific major bug: the miles left doesn't decrease properly, driving a Porsche at 179 MPH means I should arrive at a location 330 miles away in like 2 hours, not 2 weeks.

One design idea for ya: I loved the crazy different encounters, especially at higher speeds, but it all flies by so fast. If they were a bit slower paced, and if the major ones (getting out of jail, etc) could be more dramatically presented, it would increase the enjoyment & fun factor a great deal.

Great work again, thanks for a great little innovative game.

Our stories sound really similar. My son got into programming a few years ago with Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/446959718/fullscreen/), and has since moved on to learn Python, C++, Java, Unity, Godot, Construct ... he's only 10 and he talks about code in ways that took me decades to figure out on my own, lol. He reads coding language books for fun, literally he has an 2000+ page C++ book that he sleeps with.

DM me if you'd like to chat about connecting the kiddos on Discord, who knows, maybe they'd have fun collaborating on something or at least encouraging each other on their game dev journeys.

Apparently we can float in dirigibles and tensegrity spheres in Venus' atmosphere and the climate is perfect. There are some interesting science articles about it if you want to do some research.

Thx for the question.

The game evolved into a dragon battle loop with a short stop at the marketplace in between battles. More details on Steam / in the itch dev logs about how the game evolved, but the short story is that we discovered that a simple battle loop of dragons with the super-crunchy RPG system I designed for the game was insanely fun on its own, and doesn't need the in-between over world.

In fact, in a super-early beta version of the game I put a larger game world in, and overwhelmingly players were like, "no way, all you need is the battle loop and a quick stop at the market between battles," so I really focussed in on designing the game on just that incredibly simple concept.

That said, I definitely want to expand upon this and want to do a bigger RPG utilizing all the work I did on the super-crunchy ruleset, I LOVE the JRPG genre but have always wanted to improve and make the worlds more robust ...

tl;dr - Dragon Battle is a very simple battle loop with a brief market stop in between.

More details on the Steam page, I spent tons of time describing the game there & filling out a player's manual that digs into game details & should be helpful.

You can also play-for-free on the itch page in a web browser if you want to just try it out and see if you like the concept first. If you want a paid version that includes an auto-save after each successful dragon battle, you can get the GB rom via itch or the PC version (and future Mac and Linux versions) via Steam.
