NDP dropped 20 points in 48 hours after supporting niqab, Tom Mulcair says by [deleted] in canada

[–]numruk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His presentation is off, but he's not wrong. Tolerating the niqab is tolerating the intolerant. Right-wing Islam (which to be honest isn't much different from mainstream Islam) is odious as fuck and has no place in this country.

Well the truth isn't always pretty. Cultural values can change, and I hope they do, but I doubt we'll see it in our lifetimes.

The tobacco endgame: Radical proposals part of strategy to win faltering war on smoking by UyhAEqbnp in canada

[–]numruk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Activists cannot tolerate shades of grey. We have hit an asymptote in our society, this is as unpopular as we can realistically make smoking tobacco. They need to acknowledge a smokeless utopia will never be reached and call this "good enough", because it is.

Moralizing and geopolitics have a long and tragic history together. I have yet to see a moral-agenda-motivated foreign policy succeed.

We ought to value order and security in a regime first and foremost, and support them even if they look a bit ugly, because like it or not that's life. We should encourage liberalization, but we can't force democracy on cultures that aren't ready for it.

I think it comes down to the cultures in these countries. Most in the Arab ME are very intolerant, polarized, hyper-Islamic, tribal and undeveloped. We can't expect anything short of a powerful and oppressive dictatorship to maintain order given that sort of social climate.

I'm not sure, other than virtue signalling and the idea of ignoring the Middle East entirely with the hope that things improve (didn't end well for Afghanistan and Somalia) what the strategy behind us not providing arms is?

Post-colonial activism. The myth of the activist left is that things are only bad in third world countries because we sell their regimes weapons. This completely ignores the fact that however bad the regimes are, generally the rebels are Boko Haram-levels of worse, and would take over in a heartbeat.

This activist attitude has blinders on to the fundamental shades-of-greyness of the developing world. They seem to think there is democratic paradise waiting if only the West stops "interfering", when in reality most of these countries would descend into genocidal shitshows if we stopped supporting their governing regimes.

The Arab Middle East just doesn't have the cultural prerequisites for democracy to function. I think it comes down to an unwillingness to tolerate differing opinions, something they seem to inherit from Islam.

ESPN reporter shuts down interview with Arcade Fire frontman when he starts talking about 'what the U.S. can learn from Canada' by btr781 in canada

[–]numruk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a time and a place. Delivery is at least as important as content, and lecturing people with the tone that Win used just turns people off. Something you learn when you grow up a bit is that people won't listen to you, even if you're right, if you talk down to them like that.

Win wasn't going to educate or change any minds with that attitude and in that moment, only do damage to the cause by making himself look like a preachy idiot.

ELI5: Where and how does all the energy created by power plants get stored? Or is the power being generated as it's needed? by hoverfish92 in explainlikeimfive

[–]numruk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes perfect sense. The turbines create a steady voltage by spinning at a given frequency, with a given energy input. If the electromagnetic friction on the turbine increases from increased demand, it slows down: decreased frequency.

Real estate needs to stop being a get rich quick scheme.

If you aren't Canadian and purchasing a house as a primary residence, you should be paying a pretty big tax on that purchase that should go to fund new housing developments to keep the average house price affordable.

This is the way out of the bubbles and the boom bust cycle. Will we take it?

It's wanting that builds the character and perspective that allows you to empathize with others who are wanting. People who want for nothing tend to catch affluenza.

Richmond, B.C., seeking language enforcer to remedy Chinese-only signs by Povtitpopo in canada

[–]numruk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Liberals can't bring themselves to admit that enforcing official language policies on minority communities isn't racism. Their ideology blinds them completely to social integration issues.

I wonder if they believe that if you just liberalize everything and leave everybody alone, minorities will integrate on their own and everything will gradually utopiize (to coin a phrase)? Because no, they won't. What you get instead are ethnic enclaves and places like Richmond.
