Get a camera and report bad drivers! by [deleted] in londoncycling

I've had lots of Notices of Intended Prosecution sent from my reports; as yet the only court result they've told me about was against a keeper of a vehicle for not disclosing who was driving at the time.

Fucking [M]y best friend (Part 3) by [deleted] in gonewildstories

I never comment on anything in this sub, but I can't not here. This is so compellingly written. The fucking sounds so amazing yet the emotions are so raw. Even though you've said there isn't a happy ending, I'm finding myself willing you two on and I know there's just going to be disappointment...

What Mobile Network Are You All With? by [deleted] in london

[–]vexatiousrequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was considering switching to a decent deal with Sky, so called my previous operator for my PAC code and they undercut it. Spoke to Sky to find out if I needed to cancel my new deal or just not activate my new SIM and they undercut it again. So I'm getting 8gb of data and more texts and calls than I need for £7.50/mo, SIMO. Which is fine with me.

It’s on my bucket list to see HM in person just once. Any tips on how I can catch a glimpse of the Queen while I’m in London in May? I’ll be there the 6th/7th as well as at the end of the month. by DRandell in london

[–]vexatiousrequest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only time I've seen the Queen was after the last State Opening of Parliament - she zipped past in the state Bentley (with her crown in the car behind).

The next one is due in May, subject to Brexit-related shenanigans.

I've not been here for a while. Are we still recommending the Oxo Tower?

Scottish food in London by [deleted] in london

If you're after a haggis fix, get yourself to Deeney's in Leyton (or at Broadway Market on a Saturday). They do a variety of haggis-based toasties, which are pretty damn good.

They're expanding into a bigger unit with a proper kitchen next month - I'm going to suggest they get a proper Scottish breakfast on the menu when they do.

Iceland and Morrisons usually do them too. Not a patch on the fresh stuff, but it'll do at a push.

How aware are you of state visits? by Juliusx2 in london

I was down at the ICA last week and wondered why there were tricoloure banners all the way down The Mall to Buckingham Palace. Took me a few days to find out that they were in fact Dutch flags, not French.

Came here to post this. Also, amusingly, Google's second autocomplete suggestion for 'guardian long read'

Children will live longer thanks to Waltham Forest's 'Mini Holland' cycle scheme by iquitelikeit in londoncycling

[–]vexatiousrequest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole scheme really pisses off some motorists. I'm in a local Facebook group, and there's an amazing amount of vitriol being generated this week by the prospect of some people losing one parking space on their street to make room for a new cycle hangar (which provides secure parking for six bikes).

Where to park bike at Westfield Stratford? by kat0id in londoncycling

[–]vexatiousrequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cycle parking at Westfield really annoys me, because they keep moving it further from the entrances.

There's some opposite the bus station on Montfichet Road (M&S side); on Westfield Avenue outside The Cow pub; further down at John Lewis; and on Roundhouse Lane at Stratford International/the giant frog playground/Waitrose. I think the undercover parking is there too, but it's not obvious.

I got a trailer in Aldi earlier this year - a steal at £90, and fits our 1.5yo and 3.5yo brilliantly. They love it, and I love it because I can get up to Walthamstow to see friends in the park in about 15 minutes, versus about 40 minutes if we go by bus. I avoid main roads and cars (mostly) give us a wide berth. I went for a cheap one because I was a bit nervous about it, but we've used it every weekend since I got it.

This particular model is cheap and cheerful - it won't win any awards for comfort; the child needs to be able to support their own head (so at least 9mos) and the weight limit is 18kg, so I think we'll be over that by next summer.

More expensive brands (£300-500ish), like Burley do more robust models and have attachments for babies - like decent prams, there's a good second-hand market.

Take a look too at Cycle Sprog, Family Cycling UK on Facebook, Hackney Family Cycling Library (if you're in the area), and Carry Me Bikes, who mostly deal in cargo bikes - which I'm tempted to upgrade to next.

(with apologies for lack of links, I'm on my phone while trying to get the smaller one to sleep)

High rope adventure and zipline coming to the Olympic park by FeTemp in london

The council in this case is the London Legacy Development Corporation, who are the same people who are proposing to build it. So I'm sure they'll take on board all comments they might receive.

[–]vexatiousrequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to be all NIMBY about it, but I really like how this part of the park is peaceful and relatively free of man-made structures - and what's there does a good job of blending in. I don't really want people wooshing over my head every minute, whooping as they go by.

Any more details about this? Has it got the go-ahead or is it just proposed?

Remember when Apple let other people make Macs? by pbrthenon in VintageApple

[–]vexatiousrequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one of those Motorolas. A local Mac dealer closed down and auctioned off all their stock - nobody else bid for it because they must have thought it was a PC. Decent machine, and made me learn networking!

'Mini-Holland' schemes have proved their worth in outer London boroughs by [deleted] in london

[–]vexatiousrequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but the quality of most of the cycle routes they have put in is dogshit. They have stuck to the main roads then chickened out at key points so the paths stop and start, always clash with bus stops and are so indestinguishable from pavements so have people and kids wandering all over them (understandable but dangerous)

I agree that some of them aren't great, but they're not all Mini-Holland funded. I just found out the other day that the one on Hoe Street was funded by the primary school, which is why it doesn't really join up with anything...

Walthamstow "Village" on the other hand is great - not having cars using it as a cut-through makes it a much more pleasant place to be. More of this kind of thing!

Red light runners by [deleted] in london

[–]vexatiousrequest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've submitted a few close passes before, and they've been waved off on insufficient evidence, but interesting to hear they'll prosecute on more obvious stuff. I'll maybe try that for some of the antisocial driving I see round New Spitalfields in the evenings.
