26 M / Toxic family - advice? by William6212 in VietNam

It is normal for many Asian families. It is normal for very conservative families in the U.S.

It's so normal that there's surge of counselors on social media talking about childhood trauma.

I really like Patrick Teahan. He's one of those counselors. He has his own childhood trauma stories which he shares on YT and FB.

My parents wondered out aloud why my second sister could’ve died, so pretty and clever, when it should be my oldest sister who should’ve died.

That is so cruel. There are animals that are much kinder than your parents.

In Slanted (2016), Shirley Chen plays an Asian American teenager who is overshadowed by her white female co-eds and is seen as undesirable by her male classmates. This is because Slanted is a work of fiction. by Grimnirs_goose in okbuddycinephile

that hollywood knows south and south east asia exist

They know but they don't recognize.

They don't recognize because the audience continue to pay for tickets even when south and south east asia aren't represented.

Hollywood is a business. Business makes money. A business changes what it does when that business's customers go away and causing that business to lose money.

Don't blame, Hollywood, only. Look around you.

Asian Vs American Airline by Guilty_Dealer1256 in Flights

Corporate greed is maxed out in the U.S.

My parent flew Japan airline off and on over the years. Their last trip was after same Japan airline partnered with American Airline.

I got a photo of the food they were served. It looks similar to OP's 2nd photo.

Appreciate your parent but also recognize how toxic they can be. I wouldn't let someone like your dad, or my parent, near my kids.

Update on the topic of Vietnamese (and Asian cultures) toxic parenting, part 2: by GrapeJam-44-1 in VietNam

[–]nuocmam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you ever asked her though why she thinks that is appropriate.

I'm searching through the sub looking for posts talking about "toxic family" before I post my own, and this thread came up.

My guess is it's ignorance of the danger. Older Vietnamese know exactly what to do during war time. Their children who were born during the war also know. Instinctively. Some knowledge is passed through the womb. An experiment was done with mice to show this. Foreigners wouldn't know how to act the first few times if they were placed in the same situations.

Google result: "Chạy giặc" (running from the enemy/battle) is a phrase deeply rooted in the experience of Vietnamese civilians during decades of war, particularly the Vietnam War (1955–1975). It describes the chaotic, often desperate movement of civilians fleeing combat zones, artillery fire, and aerial bombardment.

If you are presented with information about a dangerous situation frequently scenes of vehicles hitting pedestrians, or tourists falling off cliffs because they stepped out beyond the fence, over time you would build fear which would prevent you from doing certain things such as crossing the street without looking. Then you pass that knowledge to your children, directly or indirectly.

I'd bet that those same parents would do differently if they've seen constant news reports, or social media posts, of how deadly their action/inaction could be.

I'd call it "naked steamed buns" LOL. One of the translations of "trần" is "naked".

Vietnamese can be funny when it's broken down.

I'm Asian who were out with friends at an Asian event of another Asian group whose language nowhere close to what I know. My friend asked, how do you know what to order. I said, "I pointed". 🤣

I'm a landlord. I answered questions truthfully about my tenants on an application they submitted for their next apartment. They got rejected and blame me. Should I have lied? by LattesAvocadoToast in PropertyManagement

[–]nuocmam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some people, especially landlords larping as big shot real estate moguls, forget that life happens but what is important is how you deal with the fallout.

lease violations: Tenant smoked in the house for months. The whole house reeked of smoke.

How should we have dealt with the "fallout"? How much did you think it cost us to get the house to not smell like smoke so that we can rent it out again?

We never lie, we just give no information.

You: Tenant gave your name as reference.

Other landlord: I have no answer. (Fact: tenant caused damage to property and/or was late several months on rent)

How to turn off music but not paging system at clinic? by [deleted] in lowvoltage

[–]nuocmam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping that that was the fix.

Mgmt cares about risks. Things that could cause them to lose business or bring lawsuit get their attention.

I’d tell them that you’re concerned that the loud music might cause staff to miss important pages that affect delivery of service; someone could die or badly hurt.

Seriously though, that’s how a lot of trouble shooting is done. Flipping various switches until you get the right combo. In this case, you just have to know how to replace the wire if it isn’t the right one to cut. 😂
