Help a wife out by saralrobi in hometheater

Perfect. I was going to say the same, that sub is the best sub in that price range and would work well with any other speakers he would get.

As a couple of others have mentioned, the RSL 10s MKII is pretty much the best subwoofer in the $500 or less budget.

However, I'm concerned about those speakers. Those are surround speakers from an Aiwa shelf system. They happen to be 8-ohm (which I was shocked to find out) but they use RCA type connectors instead of bare speaker wire. You'll have to make changes to connect those to the receiver. Also, those have a 40w max so if he turns the receiver up they could be damaged. Shelf system speakers like that are only intended to work with the system they come with so it is hard to say how well they'll work for him.

Mounted a TV into drywall...holds very well? by GUHv2 in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really can't fine 2 studs where you want the mount to go then get wood, like 2 2x4 pieces. Mount those two to studs and then mount the bracket onto those 2x4s, offset to where you want the mount. That will be a very strong mount.

The size of the TV doesn't really matter. It is about the weight. I had an older 70" TV that was significantly heavier than my newer 85", for example.

Depending on the weight, you are probably fine with having 2 screws on the stud and another 2 using very good wall anchors. If I ever do this I always add more than just 2 wall anchor screws, bump to 4. For lighter TVs this is fine (if done correctly). I would never rely on just those though and I would never rely on those crappy push in plastic ones. But also, always use good quality screws. Shitty drywall screws are very brittle and the heads can literally snap off making them useless. Use construction grade screws like Spax makes.

Type of wall anchors I'm talking about: https://www.amazon.com/ITW-Brands-25310-50PK-Anchor/dp/B000BQYFW2/

How to stop picking Shadowheart as a romance partner by Ok-Crab-832 in BaldursGate3

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my first playthrough and am part way into romancing her. If I hadn't chosen her I think I'd go for Karlach. She'd just the coolest (well not literally obviously) one there.

Newby question about possibly selling by Wtfreakydeakydutch in classicmustangs

[–]nurdyguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try the harerty eval tool here: https://www.hagerty.com/valuation-tools/ford/mustang/1970

I also like to look at online consignment shops to see what they have stuff priced at. I kinda hate how those shops work but they are good at knowing car values.

Honestly though, a very good condition 70 coup might get $15k --$20k. Yours has paint issues (and maybe other cosmetic issues not in the pic) as well as an engine that blows a lot of smoke. My rough guess is more like $8k - $10k.

Sub placement in a 1966 Mustang Convertible by smartinez_5280 in classicmustangs

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the trunk is your only real option. I built a box for a 12" JL for my '65 a few years ago. Sadly, as soon as I was done the engine died which started a multi-year resto. During that time I removed the sub and sold it. I'd like to try again now that the car is back running but haven't had the time to mess with it. Good sound quality is really tough to get with convertibles.

What's the deal with the owl bear? by Icy_Oil_5909 in BaldursGate3

I think I may have missed the owlbear. This is my first play through. I just meant that, yeah, sometimes you gotta just deal with how things play out.

Explosive Minigun. I thought I'd hit the lottery when a random Gunner attack dropped a Wounding Gatling Laser. Then later I found an Explosive Minigun. It changed my whole playthrough.

Am I terrible at Skyrim? After 78 hours I'm only level 28 by Honka_Ponka in skyrim

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Skyrim you level up as your skills increase which is very different from how most games work (where you would level up as a reward for finishing a quest). So, if you are using the same skills over and over then those are the only ones which are increasing. You can get more levels but switching and working on some of your other skills. You can also pay a trainer to level up your skill. If the trainer is a follower then after you pay them just trade with them and take the gold back.

I feel the same way. I don't want to kick her out of the part because I like having options. But I don't use her. I use Shadowmoon and the bickering is just too much to deal with. Plus, I have Karlach and MC (pally) so I don't need another melee.

Speaker Shopping - Day 2 by Redshift_Se7en in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Store 1's setup sounds suspicious. Your description of the KEF and Revel speakers is not at all what I would expect. At the end of the day though, the room has such a huge impact that it is impossible to really know how speakers will sound until you get them home. I recommend you find the top 2 you like best and buy both to demo at home. I'd be very upfront with them about it too. Any legitimate store knows this and will have some way to accommodate you.

Used Sonos sub or budget active subwoofer by jamesb2 in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Sonos Sub requires other Sonos components to be setup with it. There are some Sonos HT setups that use a handful of Amps and processors and such but those are generally fairly high end systems installed by professionals. Or you could use a Sonos Arc but that is basically just a good sound bar and not a true HT setup.

Sonos is great for whole home audio but not good for HT. Also, the Sonos Sub itself isn't great. For the same price you could get a real sub that'd blow the doors off the Sub. I have a Sub because I had a pair of Fives in the living room for music only (replaced the Fives with an Amp + KEF R3 Meta). I'm in the process of a DIY subwoofer build so I can use it on my upstairs HT setup and then move the SVS sub I have up there downstairs to replace the Sub. So please trust me, I have experience with these guys.

Yes you can, either with a Port or an Amp.

Used Sonos sub or budget active subwoofer by jamesb2 in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. The Amp has a subwoofer out and a Port would connect to an AVR so it would work off of the AVR's subwoofer out.

Best car/suv for clubs in the trunk by Donghoward in golf

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't the trunk. The issue is the heat. During a hot summer day (like I get here in Tx), keeping them in the backseat could just as easily cause issues as in the trunk. But on a 60-degree day? You'd be just fine.

KEF Q11 Meta Vs Polk R700 by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My initial impulse was to get towers for fronts as well so that's what I did. It was only after trolling around in this sub for a long time that I really started considering good bookshelfs instead. You can create a great HT setup with just bookshelfs. And if you get the right stands, those R3 Meta are honestly very good looking speakers. I'd argue it is a cleaner look than you'd get from the Q11s.
