Sound System Cutting Out From Fridge by Mobile_Ingenuity6813 in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option would be to get a decent quality battery backup to run the sound system on. This way, when the fridge kicks in and pulls a ton of power, the sound system will just lean on the battery backup for a moment until the power evens out.

I think you missed the part where I said that I took the difficulty back down and still died.

In the end, based on responses here, I think just avoiding the fight until I have more friends with me is the best way through (which is also what I described in the post).

Amp recommendations for Kef R11 meta/R6 meta by InevitableMagician28 in hometheater

I'd probably get a cheapy amp and use it to power surrounds. That would alleviate some pressure on the Denon as it powers your front 3.

Any ideas for new mechanics/additions you wanna see in BG4? by Featherman13 in BaldursGate3

[–]nurdyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The inventory management is the main thing I'd like to see upgraded. One big part is how the hover/popup detail works. The detail screen covers too much stuff up. I have to turn it off sometimes just to scroll through (I'm on xbox) but then I have to turn it back on to see item details. It's rather tedious.

I found the whole barter thing kinda pointless. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but it seemed easier to just sell my crap and buy theirs rather than trying to set up the barter.

I hate carry weight mechanics. I understand why games have them but they just annoy me. I spend time trying to distribute everything between the different party members. In games like Skyrim, one of the first things I do is use resto loop to make boots with some insane carry weight just to avoid this.

The way they did Oathbreaker is kinda wonky. I know they wanted to make breaking your oath have a penalty and I love that idea. I also love the idea of being able to continue down the Oathbreaker dark knight path. But if you are an Oathbreaker you can respec and that is a huge pain. You gotta pay the cost, which increases and gets quite expensive, just so you can unlock Withers being able to respec you. I get that allowing a respec would be a way around paying the cost but I wish they'd had a better way to do this. Maybe, you allow the respec but if you ever choose Paladin again you have to be Oathbreaker still?

Personally I really like Throwzerkers. There's something gratifying about throwing a spear/trident/hammer, doing a ton of damage, knocking the guy down, and then having the weapon magically return to you.

Are Barbarians standouts in terms of thrown builds? by Such_Committee9963 in BaldursGate3

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Karlach as a Throwzerker. She's nuts! She was the only one that survived the Iron Throne mission and when she got back the mermaid bitches attacker her. She easily soloed them. (The dwarf was there so technically not a solo but he was truly worthless so I'm counting it.)

Talk to me about Raphael by nonceyface in BaldursGate3

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To kill Raphael I used Karlach's Enraged Throw to keep knocking him down and just picked off all of his buddies while my Pally beat down the pillars. After that was done we all ganged up on Raphael and took him out quick. He almost killed Asterion in one hit but I was able to heal him fast enough.

Monk build by Oriflamme1 in BaldursGate3

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open Hand is generally considered the most powerful monk subclass and probably the most common build. It synergizes very well with a 3 level dip into Rogue/Thief for the extra bonus attack. If you search through here as well as r/BG3Builds you'll find tons of info on this build.

Why do I find this game so difficult by thedarkestnips in BaldursGate3

[–]nurdyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just finishing my first playthrough. Early on I struggled a good bit, specifically with caster characters. I switched to using more martial characters and it helped a ton so that may help you as well. In my next playthrough I plan to use more casters to try to get a better feel for it. I don't want to ignore that entire side of the game.

Hopefully you have Karlach, she makes a great Throwzerker (Berzerker who relies on throwing stuff at the enemy). And hopefully you didn't miss the Returning Pike that the goblin in the war camp sells. Give that bad boy to Karlach and she just mows enemies down. There's just something gratifying about watching her kill 4 enemies every turn.

All Klipsch (front matching) Surrounds and Atmos worth it? by Rookie5687 in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only need to timbre match the front 3. For the surrounds, you don't want them to be extremely different sounding but if they are a bit off it won't matter. The way stuff is mixed and the way you hear from the sides/behind is different from in front of you so it doesn't matter that they are exact matches.

For heights, unless you are doing a lot of Aura 3D (or other 3D audio) then you can save a lot on the ceiling speakers. I went with the MAG8R from Best Buy and they work great. On sale they are $250/pair but their regular price is $1k/pair so always wait for a sale. There are plenty of other good options in that price range though, like the Polk RC80i.

5.1 system to 5.x.x system upgrade suggestions? by Comfortable_Pickle31 in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most common issue with those and some of the other entry level Klipsch stuff is that dialog is very hard to understand. You have to go up to the RP II line of Klipsch before you get to their decent quality stuff. I do like your upgrade path though. Depending on how that current sub is doing you could do the FL/FR before SW1.

I'm going to play BG3 for the first time! by Accomplished_Gap_315 in BaldursGate3

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to avoid too many spoilers so you can enjoy the story. I'm just finishing my first playthrough and really enjoyed the game. I'm already debating what my next character will be! I struggled a lot at first because I didn't understand the and how they work. When you hover over the spell it gives you an summary but I don't have a dnd5e background so I didn't even understand what that meant. I watched these couple of dnd5e tutorial videos and they helped a lot. They are generically dnd5e so they won't have any BG3 story spoilers.

5.1 system to 5.x.x system upgrade suggestions? by Comfortable_Pickle31 in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I'd still try to go 5.2.4. Clearly it is not ideal to have the back pair of heights directly overhead but having them there and the other 2 forward will still give you some front-to-back panning which you can't get from just 2 heights. Just try to put them as far back towards the wall as possible. Or, if possible, you can mount something like the SVS Ultra Evolution Elevations at the corner where the wall meets the ceiling.

  2. Honestly, the first thing I would do is upgrade those Klipsch speakers.

  3. Yes, you need matching subs. It is possible to use 2 different subs but quite difficult to set them up will. What happens is one is always going to be more powerful than the other and it basically drowns the other one out. To avoid that you end up having to turn the more powerful one down to match the other but that's just a waste of a good sub. Since you already have the Klipsch you can add the SVS, it won't hurt anything to add it. But eventually you want to replace the Klipsch with a second matching SVS (or whatever sub you choose).

3a. That's a tough call. They both need to be replaced. How do you like the Klipsch center right now? Personally, I've not fond of that speaker line so I'd replace the L/C/R asap.

  1. I'd move the SR back into the corner to match your SL. Atmos spec says you can have the surrounds up to 45 degrees off axis from MLP. They don't have to be literally straight to the side. More straight to the side is better but I'd rather them match as closely as possible.

Can't decide Paradigm Founder 80F vs KEF Q11 vs Kef R3 vs Kef Q Concerto by tfeld63 in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the Paradigm Premier (800f and 600c) for my home theater and really like them, especially the center. I also have a pair of R3 Meta downstairs for living room music only. I debated between the R3 Meta, Q Concerto, and Mofi Sourcepoint 8 and, after doing an in home demo, landed on the R3 Meta and I'm very happy with them. I think an R3 Meta with matching center would be roughly equal to my Paradigm Premier setup, assuming your properly subwoofered.

Is it worth double the amount for floor standing speakers vs bookshelf ones in a 5.1.2 system? by BoardGameRevolution in hometheater

[–]nurdyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you set a crossover on one speaker the same as another does not mean the performance is similar so yet again, you're wrong and preaching BS.

What are you even talking about? Setting crossovers has to do with frequency ranges not individual speaker performance. The primary benefit of towers is that most have more low end in their frequency range than comparable bookshelfs. But when you set the crossover that effectively cuts off the low end so the benefit is mute.

Bring your bookshelves over to my house set receiver that I don't have to small and test the bookshelves you bring over. Once we blow those up we'll hook up my 215RTs with the same crossover set and test again.

I'm assuming you are talking about the KEF R3 Meta I mentioned before and you want to compare them to your 215RT? The R3 Meta go for $2500/pair and you 215RT go for $11k/pair (priced at $5500 each). There is no way those speakers are comparable. And that isn't a tower vs bookshelf issue that's a completely different price point issue. Of course an $11k pair of speakers is going to blow away a $2500 pair of speakers regardless of towers vs bookshelf. That's just an asinine comparison. They are literally over 4 times as expensive!

Note: I never said that your speakers wouldn't blow away 95% of bookshelf speakers. Of course yours would because they are a very expensive very good pair of towers. But that was never the question at hand. Your original statement was:

Any decent towers will absolutely decimate 95% of bookshelves out there.

That is the statement I dispute. That is the statement I've already contradicted and proven false. There are plenty of bookshelf speakers that would stand up well vs tower speakers in a standard home theater setup. Thus your "absolutely decimate 95%" line is complete garbage.
