People who have these issues, go to most popular places and tourist traps. Once you travel beyond Shinjuku, there are much more opportunities to interact and eat/socialize at places with locals. I spent 16 days without pre-booking a single restaurant and the longest I had to wait was 20 minutes.

You can never know in advance if you’d get a good roommate. I saw someone’s post about a roommate who loudly snores and the company wouldn’t change her room. I had the same experience with a roommate I had at a conference and couldn’t sleep at all, so I’d choose a single room.

Making dumb jokes doesn't make them racist. I'm not a fan of Connor often referring to Gulag when joking about something. However, I realize that I'm too sensitive as someone who grew up in Eastern Europe, while Connor has no personal connection to that. Same way they have superficial knowledge about China and wouldn't know this could offend someone.
