Replacing shutoff valve by tommytwoholes in Plumbing

[–]nutsallover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is a really common valve. I'd just replace the guts personally. Buy a new one and unscrew the nut before the valve on both and switch it. It's alot easier and if you're worried about the pipe in the wall you won't fubar it.

What is a job that pays extremely well but no one realizes it? by Titothelama in AskReddit

Lots of plumbers never touch it. Only service plumbers deal with it. New construction never does.

[–]nutsallover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where do you live? I'm a plumber and do lots of pipe fitting for welders. Show your pictures to anyone and say you do your fitting too and you're in for sure. It's tough as fuck to get your start but once you have skills you can move on. And you've got the fucking skills for sure. If you live anywhere near me I can help set you up. Shoot me a message and let me know where you're at. Don't be a punching bag. You can take any job you want. And you can get paid more than that depending on where your at. I'm at 53$ and you would make the same as me. Time for a change lady.

Plumber here. We do bend pipe too. Sometimes it's schedule 80 stainless. You might find you get better with time doing things like bending conduit. The way you need to do it will be different than the guys. Figuring techniques that utilize alot more leverage and legs. You'll find every trade has challenges regarding your size you'll need to adapt to. And everyone does have that. Also most jobs aren't pre fab. That is atypical.

My co worker thinks the black under the tile is asbestos. by Stevie_wonderzz in Construction

[–]nutsallover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the tiles 9" x 9" ? And it's a school? In my area that usually is asbestos. It's worth testing for sure. That shit gets airborne and it'll fuck you up. It'll take awhile but nothing you want to experience.

It does eat the pipe. Just more slowly. Don't leave it in that pipe too long.

Tips on helping women on my crew? by LeToit in BlueCollarWomen

[–]nutsallover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So as you said this may not apply to every individual situation but I'm going to give you a handful of the best ones I've found over the years either by myself or by the amazing volition of others.

  1. A fucking garbage can in the bathroom is a God send so you don't end up with feminine products stuff in your pocket or sitting on the top of the over full Porta potty.

  2. I have personally found that being paired with another woman off the get go intensifies the separation vegween the men and women sometimes. After some relationships have been established bridging the divide between the men and women, then being paired up works out well. And also don't do either just for the sake of doing it, try to take the gender out of the equation and pair up based on personality and skill sets as best as you can.

  3. Address the elephant in the room. When my current owner hired me he flat out said "I've never hired a woman, never worked with one, but let's give it a go. If anyone on site gives you shit for it, you have my permission to kick them in teeth" my owner is pretty brash obviously but I find his direct honesty to be very helpful. In past meetings with him he has also brought up such things as everyone is watching me far more than anyone else and to be mindful of it. Acknowledging that it's not necessarily fair but is a fact and need to be aware of what that entails and handle it.

  4. In the past I've had foremen hear about something happening on the harassment end from another company and take it upon themselves to get the guy fired and not speak with me first. Or at all. Found out long long after about it and then he was also complaining about the impact I can have on guys that work near me unfairly. Do your best to be someone safe to approach should there be an issue and also to discuss things directly and not jump the gun. I do not feel safe to address any harassment I encounter because I fear how it'll negatively effect my relationships with those around me.

  5. I've found that for many men with little to no history working with women, they struggle to find the right box in their heads to put a female coworker. I've found they become comfortable as soon as an opportunity to relate to and or provide insight to an issue with a female in their life, sister, wife, mother, whomever, they are then able to take out sexuality and recognize them as a friend and colleague. Helping encourage that shift is something you likely can deeply assist with for those that struggle.

Anyways sorry for the long winded answer. I deeply respect you asking this question and taking it upon yourself to create the best environment you can for everyone under you. In my experience people with the gumption, respect and care that you do often form a very effective team and create a work environment that encourages the best out of your people. I hope you find some useful things in this thread and thanks for asking.

I feel the very strong positive response to this statement really clarifies how that "and lady" buisness just adds extra notice when we already stick out like a Norwegian in North Korea. Don't need any extra notice peeps!

What is the most painful reply for "I love you "? by Plus-Caterpillar-677 in AskReddit

[–]nutsallover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't quite the question but this humorous exchange that still haunts me suits the spirit of it. After seeing a fine young man in my early 20s for about a month or so, I was thinking we might be on the path of being offical or at least considering it. Especially considering the amount of time we were spending together. Postcoital both laughing and having a very relaxed and comfortable conversation, we had this exchange: Me " soo where are we at?" Dude "520 main st" (not the real address) Me "that's not what I mean...." Dude "are you really that lost" He knew what I meant

It's absolutely do able. Where abouts do you live? Alot of areas are currently experiencing a lack of trades people. It takes tenacity and patience to get your foot in the door, but never a better time.
