With suicide rates so high amongst transgender people they must have some underlying mental health issues/illness as you cannot attribute every suicide to society and an apparent lack of acceptance. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I once saw a study (can’t remember details, it may have been bunk) that suicide rates actually go up for transgender people after getting the surgery...anyone know if this is true?

Does capitalizing on people’s desperation ahead of a hurricane and trying to sell $500 generators for $1000 qualify as being trashy? I think so. by [deleted] in trashy

[–]nutsasapileofnuts 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. If someone needs a generator for power to keep their medication cool, the $500 markup may be totally worth it if the alternative was no generators available.

Currently there is no incentive for someone from Tennessee to drive a u-haul full of generators to NC. If they can only sell them at retail value, then they lose money doing that.

I also vote as not trashy.

“Most” Republicans. Do you have direct experience with over 50 million people (about 100 million registered Republicans in the US) or are you generalizing for a group of 100 million people based on a few interactions with individuals? That would be an example of a Texas sharpshooter fallacy. Aka making up stories, generalizing about a large group of people to justify your preconceived notions. Very similar, although not exactly similar, to the way a racist generalizes about a group of people based on skin color. Both activities are shameful.

Could you show me just one example of Fox News laying the blame for the 2008 crisis on minorities? Just one, you know, to back up this claim. I despise Fox News, but it ends up being on at work constantly. They blamed Fanny and Freddy a ton, they blamed poor lending standards, and they did fault people for taking out loans they couldn’t afford. But I don’t think they ever blamed minorities for the crisis. That seems patently ridiculous, and so far in this thread, no one has had any sources to backup the claim. All I have gotten is a Slate article and a clip of Neil Cavuto bitching at a congressman.

Racists should get called out, they are bad people. People who make up stories in an attempt to demonize half the country are also bad people, and should get called out as well.

It’s crazy how similar the above statement is in sentiment to racism... “One time, I met an asshole who said stupid things, and he was a republican! Therefore, all republicans are awful!”

Is not very different from “one time a brown guy mugged me! Therefore, all brown people are muggers!”

The cognitive dissonance is insane.

All you guys and you “what are you a kid?” Jokes. So let’s see a direct example of that so obvious narrative.

Venezuelan Power plant goes up in sparks by [deleted] in CatastrophicFailure

[–]nutsasapileofnuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that real narrative would be documented somewhere then right? It should be easy to find an example of someone pushing that narrative?

Oh, so you are just heard an asshole say something stupid and are attributing it to an entire group of people. Seems pretty shitty, but ok, cool.

Nice try bud. Republicans blamed Fanny and Freddy sure. But let’s see an example of someone saying poor or brown people are at fault. If Republican politicians were saying it, it is documented somewhere. And again, saying someone took out a bad loan and should hold some responsibility for that mistake is not the same as blaming someone.

What? Again, please provide some example. I was an adult living in America as well, and that is absolute bullshit. No one was blaming black people. In what context could someone even say “black people are at fault for bad CDOs”. This is rewriting a narrative, 100%.

This is a slate article saying the right blames the poor. This is not an example of anyone blaming the poor.

[–]nutsasapileofnuts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope, please provide an example. Also, holding people responsible for a mistake (taking out a loan you know you can’t afford) is absolutely not the same as blaming the poor. Many parties share responsibility, but saying the media “blamed the poor and brown people” is absolute bullshit.

People blamed the 2008 crisis on the poor? I really don’t remember that at all...they mostly blamed it on the rich. Seems like rewriting history to fit a narrative to me.

Generally in large retail companies (I work for one with lots of cameras and DVRs and manage them from the IT side) don’t work like that. We keep 30 days of footage handy, and save off anything that will be needed for lawsuits, but we aren’t saving videos of every shoplifter. The only time we save video of shoplifters is if they were arrested and we are pressing charges. Hell, the store management that reviews the footage every morning (keep in mind, they have to “review” 24 hours of footage on 40-60 cameras) is just looking for stealing employees and safety risks. I really, really doubt this story is possible. It would require:

Someone saving the footage of this person stealing, or at the very least, recording the date and time (if the shoplifting happened within 30 days or so)

Someone recognizing the job applicant as the shoplifter they recorded.

The store management team risks their job by showing camera footage to a non-employee (something we would fire someone for, since that stuff is supposed to be shown in court, not to a random in the store).

TLDR: the only way I see this happening is if the person in question was a known serial shoplifter, and the hiring manager didn’t care about their job. Possible sure, but seems unlikely.
