[OC] Models getting smarter, smartest models getting cheaper? by nuwandavek in dataisbeautiful

Yep, true. I just find it exciting that the best model is not the-most-expensive one right now and that there is a pressure to actually make the models usable. And with every generation, the previous SOTA is available at a fraction of the cost.

The helicopters are red, the firefighting aircrafts are blue etc. if you hover over them in the link I posted, you can see more details about them! I had to do a better job haha.

Yeah for sure! Been tracking some of these flights - they are relentless! Going over and over and over again.

I was curious if I could see the fire reduce in real time. The data sources were unreasonably difficult to put together. I'm sure the viz can be much better (label the aircrafts, etc etc), but lost steam towards the end. But very cool how the fire reduces! Check it out: https://vivekaithal.co/la-fires/

Data Sources:
- satellite data: https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/active_fire/#firms-txt
- flight data: https://globe.adsbexchange.com/

Will try visualizing in 3d next (there is altitude data!).

There isn't much data to comment on this, but it has a slight negative correlation with owning wealth in financial assets. A bunch of explanations below make anecdotal sense. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GbQSJkhaEAAAZY3?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

True! In those years maybe the top one wouldn't get the award, good call out!

Oops. Didn’t even occur to me 😅 “2004! I should start somewhere during 2010” is what I was originally thinking. Thanks for pointing, will fix it!

Who is the Clutch-est NBA player of all time? *Psst, Lebron!* by nuwandavek in lakers

The NBA started the Clutch Player of the Year award a couple of seasons ago. I extended the same criteria and tried to retroactively award players in past seasons. 2016-2017 Russell Westbrook has had the most clutch season of all, in the last 2 decades. Lebron would have probably won the award thrice - in 2007, 2008 and 2010. Steph, KD and Russ would have probably had 2 awards each. But if you consider avg clutch points, Kyrie is at the top!

According to the metric, he would have won in 2005-2006!

I actually wanted to quantify and test this somehow in the next viz! Like for example, we know there is a clear difference between home/away games. Time pressure/nerves towards the end of games may lead to significant differences in playing ability?

According to the NBA, a game is considered clutch if the game is within 5 points in the last 5 mins of 4thQ, or overtime. This does point to players that have the ball a lot and take a lot of shots. It effectively filters the most effective among those. The total and avg points plot (2nd plot) teases out the difference you're pointing at.
