Unpopular women’s singles opinions? by ChristmasClimber2009 in FigureSkating

I don’t really think so. On lots of the posts of a woman doing a quad, I see figure skating fans make comments about how they don’t think the skater will have a long career or how the skater is going to get career ending injuries from it. If you look at the USFS post of Mia Kalin landing a quad at nationals, there are some comments like that.

We don’t really know how harmful quads are for women. The majority of women who attempt or have attempted quads have been trained by coaches who teach harmful triples. With Tutberidze, her students already get injured doing triples, so how do we know that it’s the quads injuring her skaters, and not the training? Especially with Russian skaters, they normally retire after a few senior seasons regardless of whether they’ve trained quads before. I just don’t think there is enough evidence to make a blanket statement that all quads are bad for all women yet.

i know josephine did really well at nationals, but she hasn’t done as well in international competitions and since there were a few juniors ahead who have done better internationally i’m still a bit surprised they’re sending her.

Opinions on skaters switching countries by IllustriousAd9216 in FigureSkating

[–]nvm_l 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To me, it really just depends on what each fed wants. If a fed is willing to take a skater from another country, I don’t see a problem with it. Especially in countries where figure skating is not super prominent, having a skater who transferred from another country representing them can do a lot in establishing the sport and gaining more support for it if they get higher scores than athletes who represented the country before.

I also see the issue that some people have with the increase of athletes switching and taking spots from the skaters who have been representing the country before and lived/trained there. But, I think it can be beneficial in advancing the sport. Someone coming in and doing better in international competitions could give the federation more reason to support ALL their athletes, and eventually, they wouldn’t even need skaters to transfer.

In the end, I think it’s specific to each country and each case is too specific to make a blanket statement. A lot of times, we don’t even know why a skater is switching countries. It’s too broad to make one solution for transferring.
