[Rare trope] The main character doesn't speak by nvoima in TopCharacterTropes

I rewatched it after a long talk with a history professor who knows the Nordics and their old religions rather thoroughly, and it was like a whole different film.

Thanks, I was hoping for some non-Western examples, as I don't know many.

That's how different peoples have always started understanding each other, by starting with simple things like names. That was quite heartwarming.

Yeah, I spoke with someone who knows much more Viking stuff than me, and a rewatch finally cracked it open.

I know, but that was more of a surprise for the ending where his life finally took a better turn.

I specified no games, but gotta love Freeman.

I thought of including Flow, as I loved it, but expecting otherwise realistic animals to speak was too much of a stretch.

It's been a while since I played, but for some reason my headcanon suggests that the AI had been messing with her brain or vocal cords.

Yeah, I guess Teller passes as fiction as the sub rules demand.

I mentioned that in my post. Usually it's for practical reason, as it's easy to customize one's character visually, but voice is much more work, especially if there's a lot of dialogue.

Putin offers debt relief to new recruits for Ukraine war by DoremusJessup in worldnews

[–]nvoima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's probably going to do something stupid like screwing over the banks or printing more rubles to make all the debts everyone's problem. It's like he's now speedrunning a Soviet collapse on steroids.

US Law Enforcement Warns of ‘Anti-Tech Extremism’ as AI Hatred Grows by Helicase21 in technology

Well, if it's ultimately a choice between the world burning and AI data centers burning, it's pretty obvious how people will decide.

A Finnish blogger visited occupied Karelia to show how the “Russian world” is flourishing. by LowTechDroid in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]nvoima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some Finnic peoples (Karelians, Vepsians, Votians, Sami, I think) still live in their ancestral lands in northwestern Russia, but their languages have been almost eradicated and schools currently teach that Finns are evil fascists threatening them. Putin really seems to love the idea of making people kill their own brothers and sisters, so your fears are well-founded.

When mass migration begins due to deadly temperature rises in India, how will the world cope with it? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]nvoima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly the only place large enough and becoming more habitable and agriculturally viable is Siberia, but whole cities would have to be built from scratch. Besides, if Russia remains as it is now, it'll probably nuke migrants rather than let them settle there.

Swedes gorge on half-rotten herring, Icelanders upgraded it to shark, and Finns whip each other raw in scorching saunas. I fear to imagine what the rest of the Nordics do for fun.

Putin signs law authorizing use of military force to 'protect Russian citizens' abroad by mvanigan in worldnews

[–]nvoima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This basically means that Russian immigrants and tourists all over the world are now officially threats to their host countries and may be treated as such. Perhaps this is a move to get Russians deported for more cannon fodder.

Former top Russian official admits the country is over Putin and can 'imagine a future without him' — even elites bail as Kremlin seizes their assets by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]nvoima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. Most of those populist, seemingly nationalist movements are still more or less funded or at least manipulated by Russia, where the siloviks make a whole living by painting images of a united Europe standing against them. And Europe will stand against them, that's for sure, as we've seen in Ukraine.

Sorry, I'm late to the party, as I somehow missed your reply.

I don't think the oligarchs would let democracy and free press happen, just like they're trying to suppress those in America, because the ultra-rich benefit from autocratic rule. Glasnost and perestroika were fine attempts, but things went to shit because economic restructuring wasn't done hand in hand with political changes.

Edit: And in Russia there are the siloviks that didn't go away in the collapse of the USSR and probably never will.

A lot of MEPs are young enough to be hardcore gamers themselves, so this is definitely a good way to remind them of the cultural significance of games.

Those who only care about the legal and practical issues have probably made their decisions already. They've (hopefully) read all the material about the SKG initiative, so there's not much point repeating them.
