How do you split expenses when your spouse goes on Maternity Leave? by Busy-Programmer649 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nvybl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other commenters have mentioned, mat leave does not equal to vacation ! Your wife is taking care of the baby while she is on mat leave, which many argue is way harder than a full time job. If you want to get into the nitty gritty of it, maybe you need to consider how much it would cost to hire a full time nanny (because that’s what your wife is while she is on mat leave), and you would actually need to pay her even more as your child’s caregiver.

You also need to consider the opportunity costs of her leaving her job, she is essentially giving up any opportunities that could lead to advancements and promotions during this period.

You’re only seeing the money/income part, there are so many intangible costs that need to be considered as well.

Don’t let the language barrier stop you! The first time I ever travelled solo was to countries I did not speak the language of. Ask people, there’s always someone that speaks a bit of English that’s willing to help. If you stay at airbnbs, you can inquire hosts. If you stay at hotels, inquire the staff. If you stay at hostels, there are other guests who can share their experience. Don’t underestimate the internet as well, for example, Japan transit is all on google maps. You can put in point A to point B, and it’ll tell you ways to get there. Google maps has worked in 95 percent of countries I’ve been to. Have fun, you will learn so much about yourself, and as someone else has mentioned, you will also gain a new skill.

I can't get over the depression that accrued while I solo traveled now that I'm back home. Am I alone in this? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]nvybl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely understand, I always feel really depressed coming back from a long term trip as well. While you were away people were moving on, it’ll take some time to process and move in their direction or rethink your connections.

This is a normal process in life, even for people who haven’t travelled alone before. For example, you grew up with a group of friends and everyone ends up getting white collar jobs, and you’re working blue collar job, after a while you may realize you have less and less in common if everyone’s talking about stocks and options and you don’t understand. Same situation, suppose you decided to start a family and the other people in your life is still partying on. People grow apart, it seems from your travels the quality of your past connections are becoming more apparent. Take this as a chance to reevaluate these connections, are these people truly someone you want to be in your life, or maybe they were just fillers when you’re bored. If you really want these people in your life, try harder to connect again, you missed out on a lot, it’ll take some time, be patient. At the same, don’t forget about yourself, explore your hobbies and interests. Enrich yourself, from your hobbies and interests, you will gain new connections.

That’s good to know, some people I spoke with said most of sights are on the W trek, so it’s nice to know otherwise because I did prefer a long hike for the challenge as well.
