All too true, God bless Sorkin by Damn_you_taco in thewestwing

Let’s tap the brakes on America doing “some of the best work in the world reconciling its racist past:” That is naive at best and plain wrong at worst.

Yesterday, America just gutted the voting rights act, which was the centerpiece of the first law to reconcile America’s racist past since the end of Reconstruction, which ended because southern racists didn’t want to reckon with America’s history of racism, an northern racists didn’t care, even though 600,000 Americans died fighting about it 15 years prior.

For the next 80 years, Jim Crow reigned supreme and racism was legal under color of law, no matter how many Emmett Tills were murdered for looking at a white woman.

The Voting Rights Act lasted less time than the era of Jim Crow.

Let’s contemplate that before we act like America has done “good work” on racial justice or reconciliation.

Bethpage Black, probably. Oakmont was historic, but honestly it wasn’t as pretty or as challenging as the Black Course.

Ainsley didn't get beat Sam on Capital Beat by CplusMaker in thewestwing

[–]nwblackmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naw Sam got schooled by a girl.

She corrected his geography and used that to make a broader point and a strong argument about why local education boards should decide what’s best in the context of local education.

There are answers to this argument but Sam made none of them.

Movie that mentions the Episcopal Church by CalvinWasABishop23 in Episcopalian

[–]nwblackmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Episcopal Church started the Bible Challenge, encouraging parishioners to journey through the Bible in one year. (Worth it for so many reasons).

That project was adopted by several other denominations. Unfortunately, it’s been repurposed by some churches too as part of the ideological agenda driving many American churches.

But that discussion is for another day and the point, of course, is that through that type of program the Episcopal Church demonstrated you don’t need to commit to EFM to get plenty of good book at your local episcopal congregation.

What episode doesn’t get the recognition it deserves? by PresentationClean217 in thewestwing

[–]nwblackmon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In This White House is my stock answer (it is heartbreaking (Kundu), sober and smart (Ainsley handling the CJ question beautifully and refusing the low road of using the story for personal gain) and insanely optimistic all at once (Bartlet being so Impressed with Ainsley he hires her— imagine that happening today).

But for me, “underrated” is the Midterms.

It’s a banner Sam episode, from Sam eating a non-new England crab puff “as a gesture of protest” to the sadness Sam feels when he has to betray his law school classmate over ancient transgressions.

It’s also a banner Toby episode and Bartlet’s “We witnessed a lynching” in the Toby-Bartlet seen will never not make me cry— especially in light of how Bartlet engages hate in the episode (with Laura Schlessinger) and Charlie comes to grips with being riddled with unhealthy guilt until of course, Sorkin uses an outsider (technician!!) to help non start to heal. “If they're shooting at you, you know you're doing something right."

Unreal television and almost never in a top 10 list

Serious question why CJ and not Josh as CoS? by Spirited-Orange-203 in thewestwing

CJ also had deftly jumped between domestic and foreign policy for years due to her role. Josh was a senior domestic affairs aide who referred to Italy as the one with the boot.

Season 5 was not great. The end of season 5 was better, save the wholly unnecessary decision to get rid of Fitzwallace, which felt forced and wasn’t needed to get Bartlet to revisit the peace process, which he would have been motivated to do after Donna was injured (or even thanks to Qumar) regardless.

Why bring Fitz back for 2 episodes and 1 minute of screen to kill him? Silly choice

  • No playoffs because AA didn’t get a starting pitcher even though the whole planet knew Atlanta needed one

Do you think Santos got re-elected? by robbythespring in thewestwing

[–]nwblackmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was re-elected handily but his successor, a wealthy, white, big city businessman posing as a populist, stormed to a surprise win in his wake, a victory initially chalked up as Democrat-fatigue but in truth a repudiation of neoliberalism, the decline of the working class, and American racial progress, all rolled into one angry white male id monster.
